    Getting up early on Saturday mornings, turning on the tv to watch cartoons and would be greeted by this. Waiting to hear the National Anthem knowing the broadcast day was about to start.

    Tommy Orange's Pulitzer-prize-nominated first novel, "There There," features this test pattern in the Prologue, weaving it into a metaphor about Indian (Native) history. The novel is set in modern-day Oakland, CA, and is a nothing less than a masterpiece.

    Many years ago as a kid my bedroom was right off the living room and I knew my dad fell asleep watching tv when I heard the tone and Indian head test pattern. I had to get up and get him to bed lol . Sure is better then all night infomercials today

    was kind of a comforting thing too if you had already fallen asleep in front of the tv and it woke you up and coaxed you to your comfortable bed instead of in the terrible position you were sleeping in fully clothed.

    "The Indian head in the jar, the Indian head on a spike were like flags flown, to be seen, cast broadly. Just like the Indian Head test pattern was broadcast to sleeping Americans as we set sail from our living rooms, over the ocean blue-green glowing airwaves, to the shores, the screens of the New World." - Tommy Orange, There There

  • @kirinseti
    @kirinseti 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    After the test pattern, you would get white snow, in other words, no signal at all. And then in the early morning, the test pattern would appear, usually followed by some type of sign on message with the American flag.

      I agree. I actually miss TV channel sign offs and ons. The reason why I bring this up is because that's when you would usually see test patterns. The only thing I'm confused about is why would some TV channels display a black and white test pattern istead of the usual color pattern? I'm talking about the 70's, 80's, 90's and the 2000's.

    Generally, the TV stations would sign off and give their last goodbye and a tribute to a flag and then go to Indian card. Some signed on and signed off earlier and later than others.
