  • Laird Hamilton cruising on a stand-up paddleboard way back in 2002. Filmed on a sunny mellow day at Malibu. Most people there that day had never seen a SUP.

    I saw him had to be right around the same time surfing at Point Dume. Similar feel, he seemed like a super-human, I was most impressed with the way he would spin the board like a helicopter in the wave. It was hard to imagine how you could do that with a massive board like that, but somehow he was doing it and making it look easy.

    I was in the water this day but probably didn’t catch a wave lol. I said ,”hello” to him, and, asked him how his dad was as he paddled by. The day before I merged onto the 101 freeway south from Ventura going to work when a black Land Rover passed me on the left. He was driving with Gabby riding shotgun. The personalized license plate said, “ Laird”. He was the first stand-up-paddler I ever saw.

    Even though this was way before sup boards were shaped. It is impressive that you can sup a regular longboard.

    • @joeblow1942
      @joeblow1942 ปีที่แล้ว

      That wasn’t a regular longboard. It was a sup shaped from a giant tons of rocker tandem blank.

    I think technically this is not a SUP board (this is before boards were specifically made for stand up paddle) but rather a big tandem surfboard. Regardless, cool footage.

    • @cycologist7069
      @cycologist7069 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** Ok I may have been wrong here. While he DID in fact originally use a tandem surfboard when he first started toying around with using a paddle, upon further digging into his SUP history, this board here may have actually been designed with SUP in mind. SUP boards were still not in production but there were a few shapers toying around with the idea. Gerry Lopez, Ron House, Bob Pearson just to name a few.

      +daniel acosta I don't know the name of the song anymore. I originally edited this to a Jack Johnson song but I didn't use that one because I didn't have the rights to the music so I grabbed a royalty free file and slapped it on top. I tried to "Shazaam" this one for you...but it came back with some weird club music that was just released last year. Sorry bro... Hope you like the video regardless.

    Who knows dimension of this board?

  • @retrain35yo87
    @retrain35yo87 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So cool. It looks like 125 liters max. Who builds 10 6 boards with 25 inch width, 125 liters?? Sups at 10 6 are mostly 29-33" wide, 4" thick, 180 liters. I think a big part of his unique style, aside from being ahead of his time, is the way he made the gear for himself, rather than buying what big brands sell..

    • @hrburrell7587
      @hrburrell7587 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed you can hardly find a true “surf” sup these days unless you buy something in the 9 foot or less range. I had a 10’6 x 28 and everyone thought it was crazy to ride such a “narrow”
      Board. No one wants to take the time to develop the skill they just want to rely on big fat floaty boards with tons of volume.

    • @laurancepene6541

      @@retrain35yo87. I just bought a clean ten year old 10-3 x 29 Starboard sup yesterday. The shape is very surfy and it’s light too. Yes, Starboard finally has a couple really nice looking longboard surf sups out there now. I’d love to find a good deal on a used one.

    • @joeblow1942
      @joeblow1942 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah, no way that board was only 10’ and had only 125 liters of volume. It’s at least 12’ long and you can tell by the ridiculous banana rocker that it was shaped from a tandem board blank.
