I've been diving (PADI Master Diver) for 40 years and started shooting with film way back then. 10 cameras later, I LOVED your presentation. I LEARNED SEVERAL NEW THINGS! Thank you so much. You obviously put a great deal of work into this video. I plan to share the link with friends. I did hit subscribe and like. I have a trip planned for Grand Cayman, Curacao, Aruba, and Bonaire. I'll be practicing several techniques you shared. I can't afford the expensive lights. But, I have learned that the 18650 batteries vary greatly in longevity. I just purchased some that will last three times longer than the brand I have been using. Thanks again for helping me "Take it to the next level."
I always wondered how your videos we're so much better than any other ones I have ever seen. Great job of explaining it. You are a true master of The Craft. Thank you
Oh my goodness. Just to take a vid.. I took toy guys for granted. I suppose I just expected yalls underwater videos to always be awesome. I never,,never knew how much went into this stuff. Thanks so much.
Love it! Good stuff Nate. Another suggestion. If you don't have good lights stay shallow! The lighting is always better in the shallow. Just because you can . . . doesn't mean you have to go deep.
Yes, I've been watching you guys since you were diving in misc places inland around florida , and sleeping in a van, and I noticed that you taught Delos to improve their lighting and put them on the map. They had some lightning but not nearly what you guys were recommending, and made their underwater vids pop. great advice, GoPro and the best light you can afford.
A new directions! Still, I love your macros more than anything. I am a viewer, of age, who started with Jacques Cousteau in 1958 with the double hose and no bc if you can believe it. Keep up the great works.
The Cousteau specials were the beginning of my desire to go diving. I finally had the opportunity to go on my first underwater adventure on a resort dive in Belize . One thing became painfully obvious, I am terribly near sighted, where can someone get prescription lenses for a dive mask? You guys are great! Thanks for opening up the world of undersea adventures with your videos!
Great Job Nate & Crew. 👍👍🙏 I loved every minute of this video. I've been an amature photographer with little intrest in videography for 60 years and I learned things from this. 🙏🙏 In my early years I found formal learning, (IE: School) to be bothersome at its best. As I've aged I've come to realize that wisdom is the product of learning divided by practice multiplied by experience. Best wishes from the Northern Gulf of Mexico 🙋♂️
From your new intro, I see you've hauled out and repainted Sylfia's Hull and bottom. maybe painted the Wheel house as well .. Awesome info .. you make the best under water videos on TH-cam or anywhere in my opinion. You're living a diving dream, thank you for taking us along for the adventure!!
Really nice video and advice from someone who has the best underwater video out there. Thanks for sharing your in-depth information. You're a true artist and far beyond a technician. Keep the faith!
Great explanation of what it takes and the gear you need. However, there is no substitute for experience and time in the water to achieving the cinematic videos you guys produce. Beautiful work!!
Amazing Video!!! This video was put together very well!!! Thanks for all the details!!! Dive gear set-up or diving techniques would also make an excellent video!!
Holy cow what a great vid...Nate you just keep hitting it out of the park! So informative, better than any college professor at keeping attention and detail...
Many thanks for your MasterClass! One question that I have is about position of video lights for wide angle: you mentioned that video lights should be directed outward. However, in most of your clips, they are directed inward. Does it matter?
great informative video, thanks for all the 1st class underwater videography tips. hopefully one day ill be able to learn this art in person with all you great videographers. THANKS!!!
Watched a keldon video re the ambient light filters. The sequence they seemed to be suggesting was 1. White balance 2. Attach red filter 3. Add ambient light filters Does this mean that everytime you white balance you need to remove the red filter Am I missing something? I have video lights 11,000 lumin each, plus an option to add another 6,000 = 27,000 in total
Wow, thanks for the help. I’m still stuck in the knockoff GoPro camp, and need to add light. A Diver’s Life suggested this video to me. Big help. Thanks.
Very goood! Just a little addition to slowmo not always a winner, sadly it kills the bitrate of the footage, so if u need heavy post work max 2x slowmo i think, cause the 4x cut the bitrate to 1/4 for each "second".
Thx for great tips. Manual white blance i can nail it but with ligths on it gives me very hard time. Two things i would like to ask. First do u use red filter with blue ambient ligth filter? Secondly, i tried to shoot with blue filter on ( first wb then turn on the ligths) everything was still quite red. Any suggestions?
Great video guys, very interesting to see how you make great underwater videos...I see you filmed this episode in my old home town of Brisbane...cheers!
I think this video shows people so they can see what they've been appreciating in watching 👀 your videos 😃 I do think about it when I see such beautiful shots , they are so amazing that I love to re-watch a lot because I love the ocean footage so much ❤ When are you going to show us the new crew on a journey? I'm looking forward to that again.
Really amazed at how complicated this can become very quickly, and pretty expensive as well. Even what you called inexpensive made me gasp! LOL I've accidentally blasted myself with a 1000 lumen headlamp and it is a little painful, do you ever wonder what the effect is when you shine those lights on your subjects? I know nothing about marine biology so I'd be curious if any studies have been done about that. Not necessarily painful, but any lasting effect on if it blinds them for some time? Or disrupts their rhythms at all?
@@dwade2026 quite familiar thank you. That’s for registering, and Delaware has changed their laws regarding. Wyoming and Oregon have tightened their rules for Rex vehicles too. Wouldn’t a non-profit have a cause? Granted the Clinton’s had one but that was for funneling money!! Now they are finally getting audited as per the news this past weekend. I’m not hating on them, I just wouldn’t take advantage of a tax break as cover for a “cause”. More honor in the “cause” rather than the tax break. That’s all.
Not sure if your circumstances have impacted on your ability to share in 1080 but I have to tell you that the quality of video in your previous posts has always been a major part of the appeal of your content.to revert to 720 is a major backward step for you.if it is beyond your control then you have my sincere condolences and may I suggest you rectify the shortcoming asap
Do you have requests from universities asking you to share your footage with them, or asking you to videography certain species of animal and./or plants? For example, when you caught the rare pigmy seahorse, I imagine academia would want to see your uncut footage. And, have you found a species that had been unknown? :¬) Webhead USA

A very good overview pictorial of what it takes.
My old boss used to say, I can teach the basics, but you have to experience the reality.

Great video Nate. Loved it
That explains why your videos are just fantastic
Wow, thanks!
First tip I was ever given. Dedicate a button to white balance, and use a white card. Good advise even without flash or video lights.
I always wondered how your videos we're so much better than any other ones I have ever seen. Great job of explaining it. You are a true master of The Craft. Thank you
So nice of you
That was SERIOUSLY BRILLIANT , luv it...cheers
Cheers Peter!
Just realized I was not subscribed (fixed that), yet I watch your videos all the time. TH-cam knows what I like.

Angle your lights , never knew that thx. I really like when you name the fish, coral and sharks. Many different interesting life down there.. carry-on
Thanks for watching!
Great explanation. I will try to implement that when I go to Raj Ampat
Best explanation of white balance I’ve seen!

Brilliant!
Cheers!!!!
Job well done everyone! Keep them coming!
Thanks!!
This was totally helpful. awesome
The best camera for you right now, is the camera you have.
I thought the filters were for the mixed light issue when you have a red filter and need to blue filter your lights?
LOVED IT !!!!
Glad you did Blue!!!!
Wow, very eye opening as a photographer/videographer looking to dive into underwater image capture. 👁❤️🦅
Wow, thank you!
Great stuff!
Thanks!
Just wondering what's the next adventure with the changes that has happened and hopefully covid lessoning travel problems?
Basically that you cant plan strictly beforehand!!

Would love to hear about who you learned from and who inspired you: Stephen Frink, David Doubilet, Stan Waterman, Amos Nachoum, Cathy Church, etc.?
Great video

Do you use red filters?
