We put a Jeep Cherokee XJ and a Toyota Land Cruiser head to head off road to see which one is the King of the Dirt and Rocks. @OutdoorAuto and I spent as little money as possible turning these two off road vehicles into the most capable overlanding and rock crawling rigs possible. There are eight categories that we compete in to see who is the winner...and more importantly, who is the loser since each category lost means a spin on the "Wheel of Pain". This wheel has uncomfortable to downright painful consequences. Everything from doing burpees, to eating hot sauce, to getting shocked by a dog shock collar.

Any extra money for the XJ should have gone for lockers. Then you don't have to blast up with speed. A thousand bucks for twin TORQ lockers will change the off-road performance remarkably.
4WD without twin lockers is 2WD, the two with the least traction.
spend the 1k on powertrax. less ratcheting sound
@freeidaho-videos i found a Lock Right for $90 and a detroit locker for $325. The detroit is significantly quieter than the lock right!
$1,000 ?? Try $400 max for twin locked.
@123-olmngresx Xcellent, show me a link please.
I agree. Lockers are coming though.
Winner of the budget category should go to price as tested. Upgrades are a never ending cycle, what matters is what you have when your on the trail.
I agree the XJ did as good as it did because it didn't have the extra weight to stop it, not having those parts arrive on time really helped it do a better job.
Really good point.
I think you're right about that. I'm still putting the bumper and winch on...probably a roof rack and some other mods...which will all add weight.
I don't care what anyone says, or what test it doesn't pass... I'm team XJ.
Me too!
I’m a Toyota enthusiast but I have to give to the Xj. Well done.
The whine of the XJ's power steering pump is the sound that makes me feel at home.
Lol.
My "next video" suggestion would be to put a jeep run together and see how your jeep and your skills compare to some veteran Jeepers. Go on an all XJ run on a trail that will test your skills. I think that you will find why so many people enjoy this sport/hobby. The people you meet are amazing and the feeling you get when you put your skills to the test and overcome obstacles is hard to beat. Come to Arizona and i can suggest a few trails to do!
I know we jeep people give toyota guys a hard time, but honestly its all in good fun. We respect everyone and encourage everyone to get off of your couch and go wheeling. No matter what you drive or how hard of trails you are doing. Just get out and enjoy the great places we have here in America with the great people we have here!
Great video!
Oh and if you did your own work you would have killed the budget portion of the challenge. That is one thing that Jeeps have going for them, they are cheap to modify and repair. Your reliability issues were there when you bought it, so i don't count those against you. Nothing a few minutes in the shop couldn't fix.
I think there will be a lot more of this XJ on the channel this coming year...and there are some really awesome builds (and people) I'll be taking out to the trails. I'd like to do more of my own work next time as well, but I also like offering a different perspective since not everyone DIYs their build and folks are interested in what labor might cost. And I agree...we like to poke fun at each other...but I've never once had anything but fun with folks driving any other vehicle on the trail. When we did the Rubicon last summer it was literally a car show of amazing builds...just made the whole experience better.
@Venture2Roam i just watched those videos last night (yes all 4 of them) and all i can say is i am jealous. I have been wanting to do the rubicon for ten years now, but just haven’t been able to yet.
I appreciate your different perspective in your videos. I almost died when i saw the labor cost from K-suspension. I just thought about how many cool parts i could buy with that! Lol
I paid $4100 for my XJ back in 2012 and have put about $7500 into it and that is including 2 sets of tires and all the maintenance items. You really can build an XJ on a budget!
This series was fun from beginning to end. As a Toyota fan, I wanted to root for the home team, but you made it difficult with your content. And while I enjoy Outdoor Auto’s channel, being able to see your work in parallel, your attention to detail in editing and the time you take in your process really shines through. Looking forward to your next creative idea!
Really awesome comment, thank you.
This looks like a lot of fun. Nice video man
Thank you!
@Venture2Roam I've had a 99 xj. And obviously toyotas. I would love to put my wife's 4runner into the contest. It is under budget as well. Let's plan a trip man 🤟
Just getting caught up on this series, and it was FUN! Excellent job with this guys!
Thanks dude.
I can’t help but notice that both of you were smiling and laughing every time you were in the XJ. Smiles for miles, that’s the winner for me. However, I have to admit that Land Cruiser is impressive. I can see why they have such a loyal following.
This is very true...that thing is so fun on the trail. That LC surprised me on the rocks for sure.
Really fun video. And I really enjoy your music choices on your content. Really adds to the mood of the content. Now.. Gotta find another XJ.
Thank you!
Gotta say, that was a lot of fun to watch. You guys showed great class when it came down to deciding who won which parts of the competition (at least in the edited video...maybe we need to see a few outtakes). I really think if you are up for the competition, Nate from Dirt Lifestyle would make a great challenge for you guys. I'd kind of like to see the beast behind your mild mannered friend Chris as well. Will, I think you really stepped up your game with the rock crawling. That was a kick!
Nate (Dirt Lifestyle) is a great guy and an incredible fabricator. I'm sure if he wanted to join in next time he'd do something unique.
I'm partial to the XJ's, and the Landcruiser is doing quite well ... but the XJ with no traction aids! Pretty damn sweet. The other thing I love about the XJ is how everything (parts) under the XJ are tucked up so high in the frame. ... and the starting thing, I've just came to the conclusion, "It's a Jeep (XJ) thing."
Love how you take they keys out of the ignition every time you get out like it's going to be stolen :)
Lol. Very good point.
Who to ask for an extra person. Shawn - the story till now would be a perfect person.
Shaun would be a lot of fun to do this with.
I would have liked to see an 80 series vs the XJ
I really enjoyed this entire series. It was just fun to watch. Can tell you guys had a good time and ended up with some nice builds.
You should raptor line the entire Jeep!
I've seen some XJs raptor lined...actually looks great, and for what we'll be doing to it, makes sense.
So I have 2 ideas for your next budget challenge consideration; Idaho vs. Montana, you and Nate against expedition overland. And final category could be an auction of the vehicles for charity obviously the choice of charity would be up to the contestants.
I like that idea.
Proper tire positioning is everything.
Gas fumes in the cab
-“Normal XJ stuff”
Lmaooo
😂
Your fuel system is losing prime. Meaning fuel is draining back to the tank. Next time when you crank to start, just cycle the key to on position without cranking wait 5 seconds and then off then cycle the key to on then off then crank to start. If it starts right up then it is your fuel regulator on the top of the fuel pump assembly.
Thanks for the info!
All that and no locker in the front of the XJ was disappointing.
We'll put lockers on it, we just ran out of time parts, time, and money.
Hey, I’ve been looking forward to this, just caught it very entertaining. Makes me long for my Cherokee again. This may be a way out there for vehicle, but in the past, I had one of the first renditions of an Isuzu trooper with the big 4 cylinder and 5 speed stick. That thing could tow really well. It was actually not bad and Milled off road conditions never pushed it but be curious but don’t think you could find one that was in any kind of shape anymore.
Ya I think those Troopers are awesome...it's on my short list of options for the next time we do it.
Its Aisin (eye-seen) not asian. It is a toyota transmission but not every XJ came with it. The manual was not Aisin to start off and the early XJ came with a french (Peugeot) transmission. They started using the AW4 when they put the 4.0 liter engine in in 1987. So the 84-86 XJ didn't have the toyota transmission.
Great info!
You are just losing pressure in the fuel rail. Thats why it doesn't start the first time. Once it builds up pressure, it starts right up. Its super common on XJ's with old fuel pumps. 🙂
Heat soak
@Buzzyfuzz heat soak is also an issue, but only when it sits (either idling or shut off) after the engine is hot. Once new "cold" fuel gets pushed into the fuel rail, it runs normally. His problems seems to be when it has sat long enough for the rail to lose pressure.
@ProjectXJ agreed. But he kept shutting it off after each crawl/drive climb. We couldn't see that on video. But you are spot on also. No disagreement. I've been through it all.
@Buzzyfuzz me too. Heat soak is frustrating! I did heat shield and it helped a little, now i have hood vents and a switch on my auxiliary fan. If it persists, i am going to install a new fuel pump.
Great info in this thread. Thanks for sharing.
What an awesome series!!! 🤜🤛 well done!! The Toyota performed way better than I thought, but my winner is still the XJ! Great Rig, and who cares if you bang it up a little… your excitement could be felt through the tv… that’s what it’s all about.
For the next series, I’d like to see Brad from TrailRecon and Sean from the story till now go at it!
Brad and Shaun would be fun to include.
Merch question! Who sells that Roam hoodie? Love that font!
I made the Roam Hoodie. The font is literally a hand drawing. I’ll be putting them in my website for sale soon.
XJ all the way... 🙂
Thanks man.
XJ was the clear winner!
Next time, instead of the shock collar, go for an actual Taser. Those suck! Lol
Great video series! 👊🏼
Ouch! I'm not sure I could get anyone else to agree to the taser..but that would be really entertaining.
Team landcruiser all the way....put a big lift and those tires you just swapped out on your xj and then it is no contest. Depends on whether you want to liesurely crawl or just gun it on every obstacle until it breaks. I like to crawl. I have owned both, and they are totally different tools.
Did you have a Range Rover Land Rover, or a Toyota Land Cruiser? 😊
@@ProjectXJ Sorry, misspelled, although I have owned a FJ62, J200 land cruisers and a series 2 land rover....still have both of the latter, and a 4runner.
@JackieGleason-kv4xi i am just giving you are hard time. Its an easy mix up. 🙂
We had the same tires on both rigs...BUT I went with 35s and Nate used 33s..which makes a difference on the rocks asa well.
@Venture2Roam i put 33's on my XJ when i first lifted it and ran those for over 5 years before going to 35's. I don't feel like my 33's ever kept me from doing an obstacle. The type of tire (AT vs MT) makes all the difference. As long as you both had the same type of tire, i would consider it pretty even.
Great series.
For the next competition/challenge.
Use the same vehicles but this time incorporate them as rocklanders. 3 days of competition. Bring along Nate from Dirtlifestyle to be the judge and challenge coordinator.
As for the 3rd or 4th competitor, find someone that is a true DIY’er
Great suggestions.
Later that night at Nate’s place…”honey could you…push this button”.
😂😂
Good one
I would take the Land Cruiser every time, but I’m an Overlander, not a wheeler. And heck, the LC could out-wheel my Ridgeline all day long!
That LC is pretty impressive.
Super cool video! Reminds me of donut media lol
Thanks!
It would have been better if you did a IFS Grand Cherokee. I'd love to seek that next time. Or an 80 series vs a similar for sale price of a Wrangler with the same challenges you guys did. Maybe add in there comfort or tech. That would show how much money does it take to make an old rig add some new and useable new tech, such as the new radio and speakers you put in the XJ vs a Land Cruiser or LX already having a great sounds system with a sub woofer including a touching screen and bluetooth all the way back in 2003.
Well fairer... better no. Ifs just doesn't have good travel for 4x4 applications. It will work, sure. But more stuff to break and it's always lifting a wheel
I like some of those ideas.
I’m pretty sure that when I first got the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk I was lost and following some guys in wranglers to get back to civilization. Pretty sure I drove up that meat grinder trail dragging the trailer behind me, it sure looks like the same rock garden.
Dragging a trailer up that would be very interesting.
Toyota always wins! If not the challenge then our harts!
Lol Fair enough.
I have to go with the land cruiser because I think the bumpers and winch for the xj should be added to total cost. Both builds are awesome!!! I've had an xj before but I'm currently a toyota fan😎
We both went back and forth on that so many times. Hopefully next time it won’t be so close!
Comment on budget: I would say XJ. Consider that the initial vehicle purchase price could be a much bigger barrier to starting a build than being able to do upgrades as your budget allows. Especially if the vehicle is an unnecessary expense.
Great point.
I have a XJ and a 4runner both modified. realistically you will spend more time on road than off and the LC is in a different league than the XJ in on road comfort items, full time 4wd, ifs, far nicer interior just a better road vehicle. off road an xj with $600 in lockers will run circles around the heavy cruiser but its more utilitarian.
I agree...the LC is waaaaaayyyyy more comfy to ride in.
Cherokee did it all with out bumpers and a winch
Would like to see Revere Overland for 2.0
That could be a possibility.
You could put that sticker on the roof!
😂
@ I have a 89XJ which a great body on it sitting there with the status of should it stay or should it go now. I think you just convinced me to keep it for at least a bug out vehicle.
@@gregmoessner3104 YES. Good choice.
XJ for the win!
Two ideas:
1: same competitors but swap brands and area
2: grindhardplumbingco from northern Idaho would be interesting
Great suggestions.
Maybe spend more than 11 cents on the wheel of pain next time. But really fun video.
Lol. Fair.
XJ stands for balls to the wall. While the Cruiser, well, it cruises. They each have their own way of handling the path ahead of them. Nate should get ahold of a Land Cruiser Prado. Thats Toyota's lighter/skinnier Land Cruiser. Same abilities and same ride but slightly smaller package. I have a '98 Prado with a turbo diesel. No problem with hill power like its larger sibling.
Great comment.
XJ is the winner even though all around the land cruiser is a better vehicle. It’s the true budget bush rig, including labor isn’t fair because if he had the skills to do everything himself he’d have much more $$$ to spend.
I think that's a fair statement...the cruiser is a better overall vehicle by most standards...but the XJ is hard to beat on the trail.
On the rocks if the guy didn't have a led foot the Toyota LC100 would have done much much better. The XJ guy just needs to drive it more to get use to it and he will have no issues.
I thought he did pretty great on the rocks. But ultimately the geometry of that build would belly out on really steep obstacles. The Land cruiser did fantastic overall.
XJ winner winner!!
👍
I am a Wrangler driver but I was really impressed with the Land Cruiser. If I had only one vehicle to drive I think it would be the Toyota.
I wouldn’t argue that choice.
Where do I find said podcast? TYIA
Coming. I need to sleep at some point though.
@Venture2Roam no prob
Winner- XJ / but you sure need to add lockers
Lockers are undoubtedly in the future for that build.
On my Nissan i had a TRD
Toyota recovery device
😂
XJ should win the budget category. Labor cost should be removed from the equation. You either DIY the install if you have the tools and ability, or you pay someone to do the labor; and rates vary from place to place. What would the labor cost on the Toyota if it had to be done at a shop?
Fair point.
Personally, I would’ve built an XJ but I am very impressed with how that Land Cruiser did
Me too!
Budget should come down to price actually spent. Even though you didn't put them on, you still spent the money. I say LC wins.
That’s what we went back and forth about.
I thought the shock collar would be worn around your neck!
We chickened out.
Did you just re upload this? I already made a comment and liked this video but my comment and like are gone
I did. The first upload was the wrong file. That’s what happens when you stay up too late editing for 6 days in a row lol.
@ well, I thought it was great anyway, my vote is for the XJ all the way. Thanks for the great video.
Great competition. Maybe Rafi should lower his labor😅😅. Always xj
True story!
XJ ALWAYS WINS❤
ALWAYS😊
for the Walmart crowd.
??@@wyomarine-m5s
Xj all the way duhhh
I agree.
Toyota lover here.. except when you have to work on them lol. Then I'm cursing "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!". Have a 89 4x4 toyota pickup as the hunting/adventure rig. And a 93 t100 as a work truck. But your smoking rocks comparing offroad ability to the xj. Xj platform is just hands down more capable offroad in stock form. Just no travel from ifs
Those are both classic Yotas.
Not a Jeep or a Toyota guy. The xj is the winner to me.
👍
xj all day what other vehicle you can get for 3k and it be a reliable build for that price.
Ya they are amazing for a great price.
Will won, for sure
👍
Dirt lifestyle!!!!!!!!
Shitbox wins budget...as is usually the case 😂
😂
I've only heard people pronounce that transmission brand as Ice-in. Maybe its Asian, who knows.
So many people from the US are ignorant. So many insults an doubts about Yotas. Have none of them ever watched a single video from ANY other country in the world?????? Jeeps are a US thing Toyota's Dominate the rest of the world followed by a few others. Go watch some 4xOverland, Ronny Dahl, or 4WD 24-7.
I don’t know…there are a LOT of Toyota lovers in the States too. Lots and lots of off-road Toyota content as well. They are undisputed as good Offroad vehicles…as are Jeeps…which is why it’s fun to talk about their differences.
I call bullshit you should have at least tried to get the Landcruiser up that last obstacle. Lol still a great video
As if you can’t tell I’m team TOYOTA all day errrrrday
There’s part of me that thinks the same thing…that Cruiser just kept over achieving.
