    There's nothing like being a beginner drummer and learning your first song on the drums. In this beginner drum lesson I break down what I consider to be some easy songs on the drums. It's a fantastic first drum lesson to help you master your first songs on the drums as a beginner drummer or to just learn some new songs and have fun for more experienced drummers

    Stephen , I have been playing and working drums for 34 years now and I have to say how great this video is for any early stage drummer . It is a very good practice plan to work to , rather than every song on every day , and a clear and well explained breakdown of the drum parts . I will be passing this on to some "budding Buddys" and I know they will use it and it will help them a lot.
    Love the permanent enthusiasm you have and the content is always at a top standard . Thanks Bud

      I just got my EKit, this is my 3rdday on them. I've been using the Drumeo website course with Jared Falk, and the beat in this song is very close to the first beat I learned. I can't do it at full speed, but I'm just starting to get a hang of the pattern at a slower tempo. It's a bit tricky, but I feel like it's easier now that I have some fundamentals down.
      If you're just starting like I am, the Drumeo online course is well worth the $30 a month if you spend an hour or two on it per day. I'm going on strong doing 4-6 hours for the last 3 days and it's starting to feel like I can see the super hard songs as possible soon. That course has single handedly made me wayyy more comfortable and confident that I can learn and master the drums eventually. That's just my 2 cents though.

    • @HugoStiglitz88
      @HugoStiglitz88 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DeadDamsel tbh it will take longer than you think, but you are definitely on the right path. Not only by learning from good sources but also putting a lot of work in.
      Work is the key, not talent. That's what it's all about
      But when you start hearing a really tough part, the first time you actually manage to play it right is such a rush. It's such a satisfying feeling and it really never goes away no matter how long you've been playing, as long as keep finding things to challenge yourself.

    Hey Stephen, I’ve been a player for over 20 years, and I just watched a video of a some people recreating the Motown sound and it was really interesting. This also threw me in to Idea mode. Those Motown drummers had chops for days obviously (they didn’t need to use a lot of times) but they had to mix as they were recording the track with their hands and feet. This makes those guys some of the most impressive and dynamically talented players in history. 3 mics, one track! Could be a great lesson! Thanks for your channel. EVERYONE SHOULD ALWAYS LEARN!

    Wow, it's weird I've been doing this mentally without ever counting since the very beginning of playing drums. I started off learning Metallica - For whom the bells tolls, Fade to Black, Sanitarium, Orion, One, The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters. After I got those down I started trying to play Rush songs like Tom Sawyer and what not. But I never counted in my head, I just played by feel and mentally keeping note of a 4 here and there. Most of the time I would visualize it like how I keep tracks of the months were I think of the orbit of earth around the sun and mentally keeping points of each month like a dot on the orbit it self.

      @@jimdiskin3760 Cell phones weren't common until my mid 20's. Before that all we had was a digital watch which I stopped using when I was about 14. I still remember phone numbers like a mental rolodex, I can recall 50+ numbers just thinking of the persons face. But they are also in my phone too, but before the cell phone you ether wrote it down or remembered it. Just to make a guess, I bet if you lost your phone you would be screwed lol.

    My husband & I are in our 50's.... well, I'm 50, he's IN his 50's (😆😊🤣🙄😲😆🤣😆😂😂can't wait till he sees this🤣😆😂😏🥰)
    Anyway... our son saved and over the last 15yrs, gosh, at least, probably more, I'm old remember. He added to it and taught himself to be really good as well as other instruments, it clearly skipped my generation, but thrilled he got it all. But he's not yet lived in a place where he could bring his kit, so he'd build boxes, something to play on and be excited to visit his drums we stored here. So we would go mess around on it here n there... he tried hard to teach me but🤦🏻‍♀️ I'm also a lefty, he is not. Nit I use both hands for everything so figured no big deal. Mostly it was an awesome way to release tension when necessary:) I have very serious health issues that due to an idiot surgeon went from an 8 to a 25 as far as pain, breathing now with only 1 lung, relearning to use the arm he killed and a ton more... so, I can't practice like I know is very necessary. Our son recently found a place to store his drums near him where he can play... SUPER happy for him!! But, we, especially me, hadn't realized HOW MUCH I'd miss them. Even just making loud noises on them was fun and has actually been something I've used to get use of my arm back, mostly, better then nothing!!!
    So, we can't afford anything with loss of work and ridiculous medical bills and more, due to me... but, my husband is awesome and knows what art and music mean to me and loved hearing me use this dumb arm to just wait away, and my son told me to go as hard as I wanted (I was VERY afraid of breaking one or all of the heads😊) he didn't care, just wanted me to have fun❤
    So my husband found us a use 5piece Tama Imperialstar kit for cheap, in great condition but could use better heads and probably cymbals, though he guy believes they're made by Meinl way back then but put Tama on them... I have no clue. Then dang Sweetwater had 0% over 4 years deal and he went a lil nuts... but, we did need stands and a stool (I can't say throne, don't know why, maybe if I learn to play I'll allow myself that🤷🏻‍♀️)
    So, now the setting it up is real hard for us, I'm lefty, but, some bits I want to do right just for getting used to our sons kit... and the crossed arms from playing open handed is messing with me... but foot on kick is better and hitting the toms (my favorite sounds...deep) on my left is better.
    But I can't quite get comfortable with it... just feels wrong, just not sure what part.
    Then, I feel bad for when my hubby, righty, wants to mess around on it.
    So.... its daunting, especially knowing that everyone says its a crazy amount of years and thats with crazy hours every day... I can't always walk or sit up or have much use of my arms... so, I go the moment I can but... 🤷🏻‍♀️
    My dream is to learn some fun loud powerful beats to slam away on.... but more then that, I LOVE to learn a song and whether he visits us or vice versa, I want to be super casual, and then just bust out a song, or at least some powerful sick beats that he'd instantly know and see his big smile and surprise 😊 but.... im probably... seems most definitely... out of my mind thinking thats possible with my health junk🤦🏻‍♀️
    But, still gotta try.... or at least just have fun being loud... though I feel real guilty having this just to make noise, but, I tried to stop him, but, he was on a missing.
    Sheesh... I know nobody will read this which is of course TOTALLY fine... more likely I'll get comments about how dumb I am for writing so much.... which I think is funny to me and sad for them, cuz, they didn't and don't have to read it at all.
    I'm just explaining where I'm coming from on this new to me... my own kit!!!.... thing and why I can't practice like I know is totally necessary.
    So, I apologize for those of you offened my this babble/vent of my excitement/fear of it all.
    And being that we're legit just trying to not lose our little home and keep a bit of food on the table, I can't afford even the cheaper classes... so I also wanted to say thank you and so many on here, that are kind enough to share your awesome talent that takes a lot of effort to get on here, for free.
    It is truly truly appreciated!!!!!😊

      Thank you SO much!!! I really appreciate it!!
      We watch your videos all the time and have saved a ton to my playlist for our learning drums in our 50's or something, my brain can't remember, but, I love your videos and the way you teach. Your love for it shows through so much. And I may be wrong, please forgive me if I am, but a long while back, before this last botched surgery, you saying something about the left right thing and it made me think differently.
      I know recording, editing, uploading and the loads of other things that go into putting these videos together takes SO much work.... its part of why I've never put any of my art stuff up on here and that's what this channel was supposed to be for.... but, besides my being to embarrassed about not being at all good enough... there's SO much work involved, for quality work like your videos are, so please know that we appreciate you and your hard work more then these words can fully express. Art of all sorts is life saving, I know from personal experience. And playing music, even as badly as I do.... still a blast anytime I can.
      And your videos are a huge help with that.
      We've definitely been a bit overwhelmed setting it all up on our own and making it comfortable, when I'm not even positive what I'm looking for, I only know when it feels wrong😊🤦🏻‍♀️ but, we'll figure it out.
      So thank you again for having so much awesome content here!! Truly truly appreciated!!!!🤘😁😊

    I love this video cause I love it when you don't have to put much effort in something like I did for example with war pigs by black sabbath which I played very accurate but you can easily play it and it simple but is fun and sounds cool like for example seven nation army by white stripes

    hey, sir taylor :) i want to compliment you on your truly likable online demeanor. you are a pleasure to watch and learn from. your lessons are very upbeat and motivational. you always provide the drum notation, which is much appreciated.
    your personality makes you seem like a legit friend to all drummers. your enthusiasm is infectious. you seen like a really good guy.
    i’ve been playing guitar and bass for quite a long time. i’m a fledgling drummer who cares about the fundamentals and wants to be good. i don’t care about being legendary. i’d just like to fit in wherever i may go. i’m big into lakewood church in houston and i want to play drums in my local church worship band.
    i tend to gravitate to the best very quickly. i think i have strong life and music kharma. so when i stumbled upon your lessons i knew i found what i needed :)
    i just want to say ‘thank you’. some moron was giving you crap for talking too much on a lesson vid. thank God you really good providers can ignore the thoughtless, thankless idiots who try to steal joy. never let them. soooo many more of us are truly grateful.
    i hope the algorithm is bringing you satisfaction and all you deserve. if it hasn’t ‘hockey sticked’ you to the ramp-up yet, i hope it’s just around the bend for you.
    cheers man. love your lessons.

    I want to play drums. It’s expensive so Ive started out with a practice pad, metronome, and sticks. I’ve been working on my paradiddles. It’s kinda ridiculous but I’ve also been adding different pillows to drum on for different sounds. And I’ve been working my foot to stay on beat with a pretend bass drum.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a great way to start! When having students work on foot control, I will often tell them to play on a hard floor surface that has a tapping sound but without a pedal. You can do the same. Love the dedication!

    I have a simple question for drummers I'd love some feedback on:
    When learning/memorizing songs, is it better to replay each song multiple times in a row even if that means you cant practice it for a few days, or is it better to play each song you're rehearsing everyday but only one time for each song?
    I'm gonna try both methods but I'm really curious on what other drummers think
    I struggle with making entirely random mistakes (my ADHD doesn't help that's for sure) and I'm starting to wonder if I've been doing it wrong this whole time. Like they're not huge mistakes but they're enough to bother me.
    Like when you practice with a band, you go through the set list and unless 1 song gets really screwed up, you don't replay it. You might loop through the set list again if you all have time but typically you do a set list in order unless someone is struggling
    When I practice alone I've been doing it the same way. I practice an hour everyday almost, but I usually run through the songs I play just once each.
    Would I be better served by repeating 1 song 5 times in a row, and saving the other songs for another day?
    I'm gonna try it regardless, I just wanted to know how other drummers do it

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Repeat that song 5 times. Keep repeating it until you know it. Then, move on to the next. Make a list of those that you have learned like the back of your hand. Play those once a few days a week. But have one song you're focusing on and playing multiple times a day. The turtle wins everytime I read that book 👊🏻😁🥁

      @@StephenTaylorDrums thanks for the feedback. I'm working on learning Stranger Things by Periphery, I'm gonna try that and see how it compares to my old method. I've at least learned the toughest parts of the song already just gotta put it all together
      If there's one particular part I screw up, I'll practice that over and over again until I get it, especially when learning a new song. But I can also can develop bad habits over time too after I've already learned something
      It's rough being a drummer sometimes lol
