Very true, but except for some super slow songs we wouldn’t normally strum a 16th note pattern. You’re totally right though, the next thing to learn about rhythm would be 16th notes
I love what you’ve done for newer players. Wonder wall is a 16th note pattern, as is What’s Up. There are 65536 strumming patter when looking at it from a 16th note perspective.
I never understand music theory as a guitar player and always avoided it. But you interpreting my guitar knowledge/jargon into musical terms is very enlightening! Please do more of this!
Once I stopped trying to learn the exact strumming pattern for every song and just focusing on a set of patterns that have a “feel” I started progressing much faster. Good video.
Man, I've been slacking off the past two months, not playing my guitar, but seeing your video pop up makes me want to pick it up again. Keep it up, and I might actually learn guitar! Great video as always!
wow. not only are you great at teaching but also an amazing marketer. The way you got to 256 was ingenious. I am past this point in my musical journey, but, like my teacher said, "you are never too good to go back to the basics". Great stuff man; also you cinematography is fantastic. Keep on keeping on and you will be one of the great music youtubers. Up there with beato, ammie, bennett, samurai guitarist
I dont usually comment on videos but you really demistified sonwell how strum patterns originate and how to go about creating your own...and you did this in the smallest fraction of time compared to all the other videos out there who just can't seem to piece it alltogether so well, thank you for saving me so much time :), subscribed
Hey! Greatly appreciate this video! Always struggled with understanding how to fit rhythm guitar on a time signature properly. Like where does everything go to make it pulsate, does this particular D play on 1 or an AND or on "+" etc etc. Even went to get some drumming lessons hoping it would help me understand it. Can you make some more videos on this topic?
Hi Kevin, Good video and it clarifies a lot. BUT what about a song like "Third Rate Romance" by the Amazing Rhythm Aces? It has chucks and palm mutes ETC. Can you show us how to figure that out? Thanks!
Some good information, but, as an experienced player and teacher, I have some problems with this approach. First, I’d say that an 8th note strum (1&2&3&4&) is probably more commonly played by experienced players as all down strokes. Second, what about 16th notes?
16th notes have entered the room

Dude you're an awesome teacher your way to teach is so fundamentally good
Ngl, 2 days ago I was searching through all your videos for something related to strumming. Suffice to say seeing this come out made me happy!
That said, lessons 1 and 2 cover strumming basics to anyone who sees this

Solid video
another banger by our guitar overlord
Hi Kevin,
Good video and it clarifies a lot. BUT what about a song like "Third Rate Romance" by the Amazing Rhythm Aces?
It has chucks and palm mutes ETC. Can you show us how to figure that out?
Thanks!
Our guitar mom has struck again🙌
Finally logical explanations..
I didn't what you was trying to say at last : "To consider number as down string and + as up"
Great
Thank you, guitar dad.

nice
Woah Kevin ❤❤
❤😊
I use down down down down for Day in the Life
*D-DU-UDU* has left the chat
Wouldn't it be 255 permutations... unless you want to count not playing anything as a strumming pattern XD
Haha I guess you’re right!
Do I have to learn all 256?
If I have to make the video, you have to learn the patterns
Nevermind I said that before I watched it lol.
@@kevinnickens Alright then
Yup …. Then you will still not be able to play Wonderwall. 🤦♂️
🤯
good video, but what about sixteenth notes
Need more views
Hey, Kevin!
Hey!
Nit: there are not 256 patterns ”between” D D D D and DUDUDUDU. It would be if you counted from silent strumming to full up-down strumming.😉
1 ∩ 2 ∩ 3 ∩ 4 is how someone who knows math would write it… ;)
All rockstars do meth, got it
Was hoping for some substance. Not basics
shtrumming? really.
