Love, love, love ‘This Old House’, and ‘Ask This Old House’. I have learned most of home renovations and practical advice from them, through the decades. For this episode, I think they should have added a separate wall mount holder for the shower wand. Otherwise.. the guys are spot on in thinking ahead for our Aging In Place residents… which will also be all of us at some point in time.😅
I was thinking the same, its up too high for her, she is pretty short. Wow, I posted this before reading comments and it seems everyone is saying the same thing.
@@clayman1000x only thing i could think of is maybe its from the camera angle and lens making it appear stretched, otherwise i would like to see a grab bar on the sprayer side to hold onto while grabbing the sprayer or changing the modes
yeah, needs one of the magnetic ones where the hand part sticks at the top and if you want to hold it, you can grab it anywhere along the line or the handle to pull it down.
I watched this episode. That shower is way too high up both for her to grab the handheld shower head and to turn it on/off. Need one you can mount low and control from the handle or lower on the wall.
I believe the stiff hose would allow anyone to dislocate the hose from the top to drop the shower head. I mean it’s just my experience being an adult and living with short adults my whole life. I’m sure a shorter child might have trouble but not this woman.
asking for a delta diverter in the wall? bro that's a job that requires ripping out drywall from behind or tile from the front for plumber to repipe everything. then comes the cost of covering it all back up. everything is possible but homeowner has to consider cost of what they are asking for...
Ya shower hand unit way too high…….if she wants they sell shower hand unit hooks that mount anywhere via sticky tape on the back to hold the hand held shower unit .. I got mine at Amazon
As short as Margaret is, putting the detachable that high up is going to be a problem for her. I would have installed an adjustable pole so the shower head attachment could be lowered to her ideal height. With a simple twist, it locks into place and stays there. I hope they remembered to put some silicone caulk to seal up the holes before they covered the pole ends with the plates.
I like the bar fastener system shown. Most bars need to handle atleast 300lbs and no one thinks of installing 2x6 nailers behind showers in construction of the bathroom back then. Like others, I would have put a rod for adjusting the height of the portable shower head...its height is out of most reach, especially hers.
You don't need to secure the grab handles to some sort of framing material? I know these are meant for old frail people to grab on to, but I can't imagine some backerboard and a thin tile is going to support a falling person. Now not only you have injuries, but you also ripped apart half your shower from the wall.
I used to invest freely in home improvements without a second thought, but with rising inflation eating into my savings, I've had to become more cautious. Even though I’ve made adjustments, the costs of those earlier projects have been tough to recover from. Now, I’m a lot more focused on making my savings last and thinking carefully about every upgrade. I know a lot of others are feeling the pinch too, it’s made me rethink what’s really worth the investment
I’m nearing retirement myself, and I had similar concerns. I started investing later than most, and just relying on ETF compounding wasn’t cutting it for me. After working with a financial advisor, I managed to restructure my investments and am now on track to retire with around $4 million. If I hadn’t sought advice, I doubt I’d be as confident in my plan right now
I usually steer clear of recommending specific people because financial needs are so personal. But I can say that working with Emily Ava Milligan has made a world of difference for me. I noticed her strategies are tailored to fit personal goals and make sense for different needs. It might be worth exploring to see if her approach resonates with you.
@7:50 I probably would have put this 1 tile row lower. If you are sitting down in the tub, then you may want something more to the level of your shoulder.
I went the extreme route to prepare for my old age. I had the one piece tub/shower removed and replaced it with a walk in shower. Old age here I come! BTW, it was pricey.
Very cool video. Unfortunately, she won’t be able to reach the removable shower handle. She can’t reach that high. Should have lowered the shower head with a new head. She can’t reach that one it was hard for worker to even reach it.
That hand shower is way too high for her. A vertical bar where she could manually adjust the height for the shower head would be better for her. Another alternative would be to mount it lower.
No water used while using that diamond drill bit!! Guess you can get a new one after this was filmed. Always use water to keep down dust and pro-long the life of the bit!!
I agree. As my wife & I are short, when I did my shower head placement, I did it at a height where she & I could handle and reach everything. The only thing that is a slight bit higher, even though reachable, is the waterfall head. As people age, the main thing my aging/ailing parents used to be adversely affected by was the step-in. The owner in this video has the same issue, she will have to be always stepping over that one foot of tub height.
Richard you fuked up big time with the shower head European style adapter that she will NEVER reach!! It should have been vertically wall mounted 4 feet off the ground!!!!!
Good tips. He shd either take off his shoes or wear those construction blue booties inside her tub, bathroom. It’s really disrespectful to step inside someone’s tub w/ yr outside work shoes on. Nasty. And he turned his back on her. Shd have helped her out the tub.
Now for some common sense reasoning. She is not going to keep changing the selector every time. She will leave it so the water comes from the handheld shower everytime. She also doesn't need to return the hand held shower back to the mount. It can be left hanging down for easy reach next time Come on, you miserable people. Use your heads instead of finding something to complain about.
I am an NAHB-certified Aging In Place Specialist. This is absolutely terrible advice! No bracket for hand held shower that is lower and no controls lower for hand shower-she isn't tall. Still has to "vault" over that tub. They aren't realizing what infirmity looks like. These people in 5 years could have multiple sensory and motor issues that require them to sit to shower. What then? Do you renovation before your health declines. By then you will be in no shape to shop or think through what you want.
"This Old House is a crap show without the original host Bob Vila." Knock it off Bob! We know this is your fake account! Post a troll remark, get a dumb jokey response. 😂🤣😂
How they they just made it even worse for the old lady. This kind of shower head with handheld shower is not easy to use for old people. They should have put a handheld shower on the right bottom side!!
That hand shower is perfect…. For someone about a foot taller.
Yeah I'm pretty surprised they didn't drop that down a foot. I know it would have taken some work but it probably would have been worth it
@@JimDean002 They make heads with a arm that you can lower.

Think about how sturdy she is gonna feel with 1 arm on the grab bar, 1 leg elevated on the side of the tub and she is rubbing one out. #GrannyFingers

I'm short and thought the same thing. Having to go up on your tip toes when wet is a fall hazard.
All depends on one’s budget. You can get it done anyway you want if you have the extra money!

I like how they explained where to drill so they dont hit a stud 🤔
Looks like good anchoring hardware.

Very interesting. I will be aging in place in my father's house, which was built in 1948.

How is that little lady going to reach that showerhead?

GOOD JOB ❤ 😊
The Moen magnetic mount shower head is a way better choice than that two piece head which is way too high.
Perhaps there's something that ATOH isn't mentioning about the high selector switch and shower handle height?

What's the grab bar system brand?

Can she reach the shower head selector.

Lower mounting height for Horizontal (longer bar) - better
