- Ghetto tubeless for a non-tubeless wheels with a split tube and
camping mattress. This is because tape doesn't work with this non-tubeless rim.
Wheel used in the video is original Felt DD30 wheel.
Tyre: Schwalbe Jumbo Jim SnakeSkin Tubeless ready, but LiteSkin will work as well.
Tube: Specialized 24 x 3.00 Presta (with removable valve insert)
Camping mattress: 180x50cm (6mm thick)
Sealent: Orange Seal (or Stan's NoTubes) - กีฬา

Thanks so much! that mattress trick is awesome for non-tubeless wheels with that pesky inner groove. It's otherwise impossible to inflate the tyre with the inner groove - since the tyres just flop into the center which results in massive air gaps.
Why the rim strip made out of the foam matress?!
If there's a decent strip installed already _(to protect the tube as it was installed first time)_ there's no need for another one!
Going ghetto tubeless i always take care of a few things i found to be essential to prevent getting into trouble later:
*1.* the rim has to have a *decent* groove in order for the beat _(+ split tire!)_ to sit in,
*2.* rim has to be *super* clean,
*3.* split the tube when off the wheel and *thoroughly clean* it to give it extra tack for rim and tire side - you'll be _amazed_ how tacky they get if properly cleaned with soapy water and rinsed afterwards,
*4.* when installing the tire i push the first bead into position from the inside (makes it easier to hold air/pump up),
*5.* i *NEVER* use _any_ kind of lubricant besides pure water, cuz ...

worked incredibly well on my bike, although i will say it was alot harder to out my tire back on than yours was, It took two of us to get it on but it sealed very nicely, great stuff thanks!!
Very cool. This does the same as tubeless in regards to preventing punctures, which is why it was created, but seems as though it would add more protection. It may not save the kg in weight an actual tubeless setup would, but short of a competition, why would that matter? I like this idea, well done.

Once you use tire sealant you should have put it on the bike upside down and peddled it until the tire had spun around for at least about 2 miles. The way you just did it all that sealants just going to sit on one spot I need you to coat the whole inside of the tire. That's why when you do it on motorcycles or anything else you have to go for a ride as soon as you do it so it moves around the inside of the tire and spreads evenly. Next time you do this you might want to do that even if you just put the bike upside down and push the crank for a good ten minutes. Peace out nice video thanks for the info for everybody

Thx a lot for the idea with the foam and such perfect video. I've used your method with my nonTR wheels (100 mm rims and 4,9" tires). Unfortunately front wheel blow off while riding. It seems like tire spins a little bit over rim while hard braking on bumps (some small inner tube folds has appeared on the rim). Maybe the pressure was too small (about 0,4 bar) for my weight (85 kg) Or maybe the problem is in 24x4,5" inner tubes that I've used (maybe 24x3.0 wouldn't have such problem).
I'll try again. With your method it's realy easy and doesn't take much time to assemble wheels.

Very nice ideia about the foam! But let me add something to you. Use rubber cement to join the tire to the inner tube on the outside. This way the tire will never detach from the wheel on lower pressure.

This looks like the Weinmann rims with cutouts from a DD10 Felt bike - not the easiest to setup tubeless . You can set them up with Fattystripper latex rimstrips as well which is similar but WAY lighter. I would even try taping first as it makes changing tires much easier in the long run.

Virtually all the bike tubes in my country, that I'm aware of, do not have "retaining" nuts these days like they used to. Good idea, though, if it works for the life of the tire.

Thanks for an informative video! What is the purpose of cutting the edges of the split tube after the tire is installed? Doesn’t that make it impossible to change tires without replacing the split tube?
Yes, you are correct. If you cut, you might need new one for new installation.
I already have gorilla tape in my rims, but tire is too loose on bead, so would the mattress trick work with tape or do I need split tube?

George Solomon the foam is needed to increase the circumference of the rim and make it tight enough to keep the air in when inflated as this is non-tubeless rim. The tyre should not be loose around the rim when empty (=not inflated yet). There is a liner under the foam. If the empty tyre is tight enough and it's not sliding around the rim when you pull it, then you don't need the foam. I hope this will help you.

George Solomon Ok, good. The foam is just for the installion process and the pressure will press it to thin layer. So you always need a new one when installing.
the foam is there so that the 1. tube is not exposed to chemicals and abrasive stuff that can damage it if getting between the rim wall and the tube; 2. the tube be protected from tears (shear) through it being expanded through the holes (the main purpose of the high pressure rim tapes); 3. the tire bead should not move too much, it has to press on the bead seat all around the rim, being tight, so that the seal is stable. when the tire flexes the bead should not be allowed to have significant movement - think diametrically opposed points of the wheel like the rim would be change eccentricity every time it rotates and more so when under dynamic loads (shocks). these movements should be limited to a very low level.

Because you have to use smaller size tube for 26" rim. 20" or 24" tube, otherwise it's too loose around the rim.

I have a 20" x 3.5 / 4.0 fat tire, when deflated the tire is loose, I won't need to break the tire from the rim. Will this hinder me from installing a tubeless system?. What size is the foam and where can I buy it.also what size tube will I have to use. I should have read the previous comments which answer my first question.
How is this method holding up over time? I'm seriously considering trying it myself. I don't think neither the rim or tire is tubeless ready here. I have 26x4.0 Fat-B-Nimbles on drilled 26" Weinmann 80mm single walled aluminum rims. It's very tempting...
rgray318 it holds up very well and I can totally trust it. I've run these with Jumbo Jims and Maxxis Minions in winter.

OK, so can you please explain why you need to put pad and split tube instead of just using tape? What is the advantage of your tubeless setup? Is it making it even more puncture resilient then regular tubeless or was it done to simplify the tire seating since you don't need to use air compressor? What am I missing?

Not all tubes have removable stems. I can't really see how it's that much lighter, you still have a tube in there, plus part of a camping mattress.
Same idea like me..i need lightweight wheelset without tube..but if tube still use, better go on for tube version..much lighter than tube+camping mattress+sealant

Great video but not sure why you have to use the camping foam as the tube will seal the rim up anyway and you have the rim tape for sharp edges? What am i missing?
The tire is way loose on the rim without the camping foam. It's really like half inch off the rim and there's no way you can fill it up. It's just the way that rim is.. some other rim could work without it.
The foam is just for the setup.
@@simschro think I understand your issue now. Bloody hard to find 24" x 3" presta tubes in Australia. Can highly recomend the maxxis minion FBF and FBR tires long lasting tough and great in gravel and sand offroad.
Best tires I've had no issue sealing to mulfat rims at least. I've been using fatty strippers but looking for a more local option

I'm not sure what you mean.. but in this split tube case the air nozle is the tube's Presta nozle/valve. You don't need tubeless valves when using split tube.
Hey is it totally necessary to use the 24"x 3" tube? They seems hard to find. Can I use a 24"x 1.8-2.4 tube?
I have done the same split tube tubeless with 20x2.50 (Schwalbe AV7 or SV7) and it's just wide enough for 80mm rim.. you can do it with 2.50, but you have to do it very carefully.

Is it worth the hassle of going tubeless? No weight saving at all? You added the foam liner and then you left the tube in the tyre anyway? I don’t understand the point?

Scott D it is worth the hassle. There's still some weight saving as fatbike tube weights around 300-400grams and split tube around 100grams. Foam liner doesn't weight much.. around 10g. I did it because I don't like punctures and there is none after going tubeless. And you can ride with lower pressure and get better grip. They say that even the rolling resistance is lower. And that non-tubeless rim requires the tube or something else with the same thickness between the tire and the rim to seal properly, as it is non-tubeless rim. That's why :)
I have those same tires and i'm running with 0.5 bar on front/back with inner tube. I weigh 105kg driven 1 500 km so far and no issues with tires. Great traction summer on needle tracks, dirt trails or at winter packed snow trails.
Mr. Wizeguy I have also the same tyres and can rideing on low pressure but I want convert on tubeless. Because I had two puncture by thorn. Repair and inflate 4.8" tyre is wery difficult and take to much time.

People don't go tubeless to save weight, they go tubeless so they can run the tires at the proper low psi, get massive amounts of extra traction and to greatly reduce the rolling resistance making it easier to pedal. Also, the 24" tube weighs much less than the normal 26" Fat bike tube. This was all common sense knowledge.
Lowering pressure increases traction but for sure *increases* rolling resistance. Removing inner tube decreases wheel weight and *decreases* inertia aka rolling resistance.
So added benefit can't be *great* more like slim. Also when you have lighter wheel and you stop pedaling wheel also slows down faster because less rolling mass.
So biggest benefit going for tubeless is *"self repair"* for tiny punctures, less inertia only helps if you drive tracks where you need to change your speed constantly.
Will I be able to do this with 20” x 2.5” on a 90 mm rim or too small
2,5" would be too narrow on 90mm rim.. it's just enough for 80mm..

Tubeless ready is recommended of course, but I've done it with Schwalbe Jumbo Jim LiteSkin version, which is not tubeless.

Mike Stephen first tire until you have done the other one and after you have put the sealing liquid in, you can let it stay few hours, but it's not necessary. I've went for a ride almost immediately after installation.

Hi i see what your doing as you are still making the tire tubless can you please explain to me the point of recking a perfectly good intube to do what you have done, you have added the weight of the innertube you might as well have just pumped up the innertube and used it,if you gat a really bad puncture you would have a better chance of fixing the innertube you would have no chance of fixing a slash in the tire.....am I missing something here regards. I'm here to learn not to criticize thanks ✌🏻
You can ride with much lower pressure and avoid pinch flats. Lower pressure means comfort and better traction. This is not for weight saving. And it really works with NON-tubeless rims.

Extra weight compared to what? There's less weight than with normal 26" inner tube. And it's the only working way with that non-tubeless rim. And no flats anyway :)

Wouldn't it work without the mattress? Sealing is done by the split tube, right? So what is the function of the mattress?
It's just for the installation process as the wheel's circumference (in this case) is too small and the tire is way too loose on the rim. So the mattress is just to make the gap between the rim and the tire tight enough so you can fill the tire.

What is the main reason for the mattress strip?
It's just for the installation to make the wheel circumference bigger and that way tire to sit tighter, so you can fill it. Otherwise it just hangs loose on the rim as these wheels are not tubeless ready in any way..

@Simo s. What is the lowest psi or bar you have gone down to without burping?
I ride 0.45bar with 4.0" Jumbo Jims and 0.42bar with 4.4" Jumbo Jims and 0.35bar with 4.8" Minions. Lowest with 4.0" has been under 0.4bar, but it will hit to rim, not burp. And with 4.8" under 0.3bar.. 0.28bar lowest I think.. Minions are quite thick on the side walls.

What is the advantage of this compared to tape?
It seals the edges properly when inner tube comes between the tire and the rim as the rim is not tubeless ready and the tire stays up better.

Will it work without mattress
Not with that original Felt DD wheel. It's only for the installation phase to grow the circumference of the wheel so that you could inflate the tyre. Pressure will push the mattress flat, so you need a new one for the next installation.
If your tyre is tight enough on the wheel to inflate it, then you don't need the mattress.

@@orlandofive it depends on the wheel, if it's tubeless ready wheel, then you just need a tubeless rim tape and tubeless valve and sealant of course. Ghetto tubeless on the video is for a non-tubeless wheel.

Tubeless with a Tube inside rofl.... but maybe a good Idea when you have a Flat tire and Nothing else then a Scissor and Dishwater ;) ( I Always have that in my Backpack XD I mean whats the "Pros" of that Methot? Its Not lighter with that strip inside and is it better? Con: Heavier... lot of time to montage.... etc ... damn just put another tube in.. 60 seconds Later your done and Ready to ride ;)
