First off, based on the final results it doesn't look like you've got all that rusty; they still look pretty good for someone who hasn't painted in nearly two years. I have to say, overall I'm impressed with the Descent miniatures. We were in a store the other day that sold board games and card games and I saw a bunch of the expansion packs so I decided to have a look. I don't even own the base game, but I now have some Descent miniatures on my table waiting to be painted; for board game miniatures, they're really well sculpted and they seem to take paint well. Working with the Vallejo Liquid Gold/Silver/Copper series myself, I try to go in to my hobby room if I haven't been painting recently and at least shake them to stop the pigment and metal particles from solidifying and that seems to help some. I've also had some success with putting a bit on a pallet or whatever I'm using for painting and using 91% isopropyl alcohol to keep it workable.
yup, all my liquid metal series paints are dead or dying, I have some isopropyl somewhere so I may be able to bring them back to life.. grab the base game and try it solo or co-op.. its pretty good!
Yeah, i just got the game myself and was pleasantly surprised when i opened the box to find the miniatures were a lot nicer than I expected them to be!
here is a bunch of royalty free instrumental music freemusicarchive.org/search/?adv=1&quicksearch=&search-genre=&only-instrumental=1&duration_from=&duration_to=&music-filter-CC-attribution-only=on&music-filter-CC-attribution-sharealike=1&music-filter-CC-attribution-noncommercial=1&music-filter-CC-attribution-noncommercial-sharealike=1&music-filter-public-domain=1&music-filter-remix-allowed=1 that is generally a great site for getting free background music, generally acoustic guitar instrumentals work great for light background music :)

Based on anglo-saxon and norse myth you could also make them red or blue skinned. :)
