In my opinion, this is a vital skill for any puppy or dog to have. Not only is it for safety (stop them from eating things, or chasing things), but it also helps to build impulse control. And it's so versatile, to help with many different behavioral issues. ❤️

I love his show and thisjust summarizes and lays out all of the basic methods he uses on the show. What i love about this guide th-cam.com/users/postUgkxKkYeOoCV_w2vPX0CSyVWkhew2c4FYk0d is that you don' need to read the whole book cover to cover ... You can skip to the chapter (lesson) you want to read about. The book is arranged almost as a problem-solving guide ... Here is the problem and here is what you need to know/do to correct it. This man knows his stuff ... But more importantly knows how to teach people how they can work with their pups themselves!

Another suggestion that I saw online for teaching a dog "leave it," is to place an object on the floor, and if the dog walks up to the object, tell them, "Buttercup, leave it." They suggested starting off with objects that aren't likely to injur or prove exciting to the dog, and that most people won't mind parting with. This will vary depending on the dog and the person, but some examples of such objects are a plastic water bottle (ideally you would use one that can easily be purchased in packs at the grocery store or gas station, not one that you might use at the gym), an empty cereal box, or a paper bag.
As the dog begins to understand what "leave it" means, they suggested progressing to more valued items, or items that are more likely to be enticing to the dog. Again, this will vary depending on the dog and person, but some examples of such objects might be lunchboxes, children's toys, or even a water bottle that you might use at the gym.

Yes. I did this method. It works well.

    • @leannestrong1000
      @leannestrong1000 ปีที่แล้ว

@Murrie Mitchell now, if you do decide to progress to higher value objects, make sure the ones you use aren't top quality brands. For example, if you use a purse, make sure it's not a Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Brighton, or other designer brand. Make sure it's one that can easily be purchased somewhere like Walmart or the dollar store. Or if you use a stuffed animal, make sure it's one that your kids (or other kids in your life, such as children of friends, or nieces/nephews) don't want anymore.

We did leave it on the floor by putting kibble down and using chicken for reward so our heeler got it pretty quick. Now from afar she'll leave things alone and comes to us looking for praise or reward.

ronald williams 1. teach them their name: say their name every time you address them and when u give them their food 2. buy a clicker (makes training sooo much easier) 3. using the clicker, teach lay down, sit, (teach down before sit because then they'll lay down immediately instead of sitting first), stay, heel, and any other small tricks u wanna teach em 4. practice walking them inside (don't speak to them so they know to obey) then when they seem good to go, start taking ur pup for daily walks outside

No one should attempt to train a "hyped" dog. You should train when your dog is calm.
Shes teaching leave it, not sit or stay.... if your dog can't even sit calmly you're at the wrong video.

But how do you get to that first step -to leave it while in your hand? I taught yesterday 11 week old Cocker Spaniel to sit using your method, and it went very well -she actually started sitting on her own without me reducing gestures. How is she going to understand, that I want her to leave it? Also, how often can we introduce new thing to learn?

My Bouvier is funny, she won't take food on the ground or off a plate or out of a bowl unless I tell it's okay. She wouldn't even take food from my hand at 6 weeks old (when I got her) until I trained her to take food from my hand. Never trained her that way, she came like that.
So, I can leave my dinner on the coffee table and go into the kitchen to get something to drink, without worries that she might take the food off my plate.
Guess I would have to teach her to take it, before I could teach her to leave it. You got the best dog training videos on TH-cam and probably anywhere else. But I think I will skip this video, because my Bouvier is different from most dogs, she trains herself to do things before I have a chance, and does it just how I would want her to do it.
She trained herself to be a personal protection dog. She will herd the percieved threat to a wall and hold them there until I say Eva Come. Smartest dog I have ever had, next to Winston a Giant Schnauzer I had when I was 19 (50 yrs ago).

I know you commented 4 years ago, but this comment is why I don't teach the command with a reward in the beginning. To me leave it means leave it, later on down the road they may get rewarded say, with a bite tug or ball. But I want them to know leave it means it's not for you.

Dominance issues! Food issues are a big problem, you can't even adopt a pet where I live if it has those, they won't release it from the shelter cause it's a LIABILITY. better work on that using this "leave it" technique and establish your roll in the house as leader not you dog cause you have a dog for a master right now. not fair to him. not fair to your other dog and not fair for you. work on that :)

Oh my, I wished they had shown us this at dog school. Maybe Lilli now would not been like a vacuum cleaner and eat EVERYTHING she can reach from the ground in a heartbeat! She was already poisened but survived and now she needs to wear a muzzle ll the time we go out. Not because she is biting and dangerous, because she is eating whatever is there. She is a Labrador- German Shepherd and Border collie mix, is that normal? But now she is 14 and I think its hopeless now...

Wont the dog always be expecting a treat though?

gumbi8989 I think instead u would praise the dog, only for the beginning u would use a treat. So u would sometimes use a treat and sometimes praise the dog. I would also say “good girl/boy” after a while so the dog wont expect something so big.

+Shotiko Midelashvili Yes, I teached my dog some basics when she was 8-9, I know that's a very old age for dogs but I had also 8-9 years old and I wanted her to learn some triks (she wasn't trained). But I didn't used so many treats xd
