A New Way of Thinking About Thinking

  • Rather than a thought being a discrete object, a thought is much more like a reaction to the previous thought. This is a very bizarre and fascinating thing to see about the thinking process. It's bizarre because we don't even realize how much pushing and pulling we are doing in the thoughts space. Fascinating because when we realize this mechanism we are able to calm down our tendency to push and pull. This results in equanimity in the thought space. Resting in this neutrality/equanimity often leads to a fundamental shift in what we take ourselves to be. In short, awakening.

    That’s the basis of neurosis: thought reacting to thought in an endless and self-deprecating loop. 99% of us are neurotic, mostly in a milder form. No wonder the world is such a mess!

    Quote from Ramana:
    “Knowledge is a thorn, so is ignorance. It is exactly like when you use a second thorn to remove a thorn from your body. What do you do with that second thorn? Do you keep it safely in the old wound? No, you throw it away too. A moment will come when both of the thorns will be thrown away.”
    The words that are coming out of your Body feel exactly like that second thorn :)
    It shifts to just listening, everything gets blurry, not even thinking about the words, but still somehow recognising it.
    But at some point, the first thorn is still holding on and screaming, hello past…
    Great big thank “you” for this input, it accelerates clearly 😊
    Much love form Germany

    This is brilliant thanks for making it so clear! It seems to me that thinking can get a lot of momentum from emotions and when an strong emotion is present thinking goes into overdrive. I know that bringing attention fully into the felt experience of emotions is the way to disentangle this but its so difficult when there is also a barrage of thoughts that comes with feeling.

    • @SimplyAlwaysAwake

      Yes this is true. We have learned to use thought to avoid feeling emotion in we push harder into the thought space. But that has inevitable consequences ☺️

    I am so grateful to have found you Angelo. Spot on, as always.
    Thinking is almost more real than reality.
    I’m constantly reacting to mental narratives. It’s absolutely ridiculous. Thoughts create feelings and feelings I have little to no experience with, unless they’re unpleasant of course, I’ve been identified in and as a mostly unpleasant mind state for 44 years since I was 9.
    My mind has been trying to kill me my entire life. I don’t understand why but it’s very skilled at it.
    Outside of daily meditation practice, I’m usually moving so fast in an unsuccessful attempt to pretend to get away from my mind that I rarely stop.
    I’m running from imagination and thinking. It’s crazy. There’s literally nothing and no thing there and yet I gotta run. No place to be but I gotta go.
    (Sorry, I’m processing my reflection by writing it out so I can get a visual of what I actually think)
    Anyway, thank you.

    Thank you... Spent years beating myself up about beating myself up knowing full well that all these constant jumping tangents that fill my insomniacal hours are logic loops and 'ripples' boomaranging on a return flight just to bite me in the arse. Sleep!!.I've 'researched' /dabbled with lots of types of self help kinds of stuff: White/pink/brown! noise. Asmr. binaural beats. Sleep stories. Car, train journeys. Total silence doesn't work - the amazing firework display of phosphenes keep me entertained for ages along with all the crazy harmonics that generate from the white noise of my own blood and nerves - my body hates me 😂. And that's just before all the endless hours of 'over thinking'. Of course this is a constant - not just a sleep thing... It affects my attention for reading/'studying'. Remembering things in general doesn't go down well in the workplace. It affects conversations- they can go awry quite quickly 😬. Sooo many things. Guided meditations never really helped much... But Your video is the first meaningful help I've had in a long time - it resonated. Again... Thank You - this really helped - a bit - I Think!!?
    Also (while I'm still here) actually, actually.. A thought has mass with regard to energy spent making 'it' and energy of molecules decoding 'it', just saying.
    God I'm a metaphysical jerk!

    Grateful for the videos! Do you have any insight into how to see resistance, especially repression and suppression of thoughts and emotions. I find these activities are so quick and automatic that it's hard to even notice them, and getting familiar with these actions seems important for self knowledge.

    • @SimplyAlwaysAwake
      @SimplyAlwaysAwake  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The first key insight is insight into the direct experience of unbound Self, unbound consciousness. This is achieved with some form of self inquiry / one pointed approach as described in my book. Before that it’s essentially impossible to get at resistance patterns directly. Though it is possible to clarify things through vulnerable emotion work. After that shift in identity I would recommend work with equanimity to get at the resistance body and familiarize yourseif with shadow work ☺️

    To me thoughts are the first actual objects, they have dimensions, beginnings and ends. The current thought attracts the next one as an algorithm, then we attract a reaction thought.
    It happens automatically, no creative act by someone. We cannot do anything, but live as reaction, second hand, after the event. That is why life seems stale, it has already happened.

      @@SimplyAlwaysAwake Probably more the way it used to be when consumed by thought. These days there are thoughts but I am not overwhelmed or defensive of the identity so much......so there is some witnessing going on, therefore life and thoughts are not experienced as the same. Makes sense that there is a plain of thoughts we can get lost in .....simply by ignorance of it. About stale, sense impressions trigger a thought then the mind owns the thought about an event that passed already.

    Thanks so much Angelo! I have started doing this practice in my meditation a week ago. I have noticed every time I get into this a spot in the right side of my neck gets painful and then spread to my right shoulder and as I pay attention to it it gets more intense (no pain before I sit and meditate). Then I feel that my whole right side of the brain feel strained and that is extended to my right eye. Today another element added to it. I heard a click like noise in the room and then my heart was beating so hard and so anxiously that I thought I can get a heart attack any second. Also I had this fear that there is a strange presence in the room. Thank god it was day time.. I wouldn’t be able to sit with this at night.. I had to open my eyes to check if anything is around.. even though I knew I am paranoid.. the heart beat dissipated after a while but neck, shoulder and head kept going even after meditation ended.. do you have any suggestions how to approach and sit with this consistent neck pain? Or the whole thing? Do you know why my heart was going so crazy? Should I stop the meditation or should keep going? Sorry for the long question… god bless you! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

    • @SimplyAlwaysAwake
      @SimplyAlwaysAwake  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You won't have to worry about that until deep stage realization. No need to put the cart waaaaaaay before the horse. If someone is genuinely interested in this process I would recommend working on that first shift initially. I've seen many many people go through awakening and they drive just fine. However my attention doesn't necessarily go to your ability to drive after awakening, but more to the fears and doubts, and hesitation about all of this. I highly recommend sitting with all of this and deciding what it is you want to accomplish and what you think working with this stuff will give you. The first chapter in my book is "Cautions" and I put it there for a reason. It's important to be clear on what you are doing and why when it comes to realization. As Adyashanti has said (and rightly so), "you can get yourself into some places you don't want to be and it can be very hard to get out of." I hope you take my cautions seriously.

      Hi Angelo, I have just bought your book and have been watching your videos recently. I like your approach. I have a question about a condition I was diagnosed with. A neurological developmental condition or as the medical profession like to call it a disorder of ADHD. I have ADHD is such a identification but it does serve to explain how my brain works. I have the inattentive type. Do you have any insights about such a condition in relation to awakening? A lot of my thoughts revolve around wanting to get better at completing tasks, maintaining a healthy routine and motivating myself to do things. This seems to re enforce an identity. I may not be making my question very clear. I feel a deep frustration a lot of the time. I have had some glimpses which can last a few days. The thinking often then grabs the glimpse and slots it into an experience file. Any comment would be appreciated. X
