      I had the pleasure of shaking his hand after his gig in Manchester about 5 years ago.....AMAZING....he had 9 or 10 musicians on stage with him.

    Accidently run into their Real Life album in 1978. That was and is a real masterpiece.
    Bought Secondhand Daylight blindly as well a year later and without any regrets. Also bought their later albums, but these two are my favorites.

    One of The Best songs Ever! I was working with the Government of the Northwest territories in Canada fire fighting when I heard permafrost. I was actually fire fighting on permafrost in the NWT. What an amazing band. Thank you for your inspiration.

    Denis...you are so right. Exceptional, indeed. Devoto was criticized for leaving the Buzzcocks? Are you kidding me? Sure, the Buzzcocks were more successful, but I'd rather listen to Magazine. Know what I mean?

      One of those rare occasions when you get two great bands coming from one. Good job Pete Shelley was a great songwriter too, as The Buzzcocks still made some great music even after Howard left. I love both bands and still listen to them both.

    Wow that’s the sound of great lyrics ,Great keys, Great drums , Bass and Guitar all at once. Each member is a genius and that’s what made magazine so great.

    Try and convince someone else to share the genius of Howard and friends - there were only two of us in Australia as far as I knew that listened to this stuff at the time ! Great times together. RIP Hugh

    Saw these guys in SF in 1979 or early 80. Old Waldorf(?)
    Truly an amazing performance.
    And the recordings are still as fresh and raw in 2010, particularly live album.

      They were supported by Simple Minds who got glassed off stage after two songs. People forget how bad Simple Minds were in them days.

      This was at the Victoria Hall in Stoke on Trent. People were shouting fuck off you southern puffs, which was ironic because they were from Scotland . Simple Minds first album I think was called Life in a Day and it’s still one of the worst albums ever made.

    Its an Ovation Magnum I, made by the company better known for their plastic back acoustic-electrics. Jah Wobble is probably the bassist best known for using Magnums, and apparently he's still playing his.

    This really is as good as it gets, I first heard this in 79 and it just gets better - second hand daylight is the greatest album ever,try feed the enemy ,but then motorcade might be better, ultimately Magazine are the finest band.

    Permafrost never ceases to fill me with awe. Who the hell would write "I will drug you and fuck you on the permafrost"?! The bass and synth create the most perfect mood; creepy but serene.

      Definitely before their time. Everybody was into punk then, so this came as a surprise. Shot by Both Sides gave them the chance to crossover.

      I was proper pissed off when Howard Devoto left the Buzzcocks. Then I heard Magazine and couldn’t believe how brilliant they were. And The Buzzcocks carried on making great records too. Howard and Pete Shelly were both great songwriters, so we got two great bands out of one.

    They are a bit like Brian Eno on steroids.
    Loved 'em then and love 'em now.

    Dark....!! What a fantastic performance.
    So much talent in this band - very under rated. No reflection on Robin Simon, but it is a shame this classic one isn't with McGeoch though, as there will be no more performances from the late great McGeoch.....

    Although I saw them in Top rank in Cardiff in about 1997 and I think John McGeoch was the coolest looking guitarist i'd ever seen.

    When I went to University in 1982 I assumed the left wing credentials and music taste of my hipper A level school friend. His knowledge of Magazine who were so controversial and trendy at the time led to several sexual encounters I would have never have had. Secondhand Daylight still resonates.

    I had almost no money when this record came out but I had to have it. Saved up and bought it and I still have it but nowadays I only play MP3's.

    Magazine - Permafrost 0856am 18.9.23 never could comprehend why folk like dave formula required so many keyboards. one keyboard would suffice if you had pre-set where you could alter tone of keyboard at a whim or when next track was beginning etc etc... where was HD born? described as the next best thing to ian botham and the Dostoyevsky of scunny.... if he was was born there. it might be the case that he wanted to be seen as romantic and suggested he hailed from an exotic region... Bradford in manchester would probably be the more banal answer to this... magazine makes me wanna multi-task.

    Ah yes, the Amphetamine years...I remember them well...wait, no I don't, that's the problem...say no to drugs... or at least say..."What does that little blue one do?" I'm joking...drugs are baaad, mmmkay?
    Kudos to the 16s...it's so good to know this awesomest of bands are as fresh to you now as they were to us old geezers back then....I still get goose bumps...and my GF of 30 yrs still gets off when I sing to her...gets off to her mothers that is...:)
