  • Today I am exploring Tarring Village, or West Tarring to be more precise. It is a small village within the Worthing District, almost a town within a town, for it had markets and fairs in the long distance past, but now it is often driven through without much notice taken of it. The church is beautiful, and a bishop here once planted fig trees.

Great video thanks Richard. I used to live at the top of St Andrew's Road and I walked past the church every day to take my girls to school then after school we would talk down the high street and go into what is now the Bake House and was then the tiny post office to buy sweets and then take a short cut through the churchyard to the park. Happy Days

my first school was in that old flint school (thomas a becket) and my first job ( paper round) was by pub and was used as post office. And further down was an old museum which is now a resturant

What a lovely video, thank you! Such a shame you mentioned the figs but not able to mention & film the ancient fig gardens that are open once a year. The Old Palace was part of Thomas A'Becket First School and back in the 70s and was my school for the first year approx 1977-78. Who'd have known years later, it would be my youngest daughter's playschool 2009-2012. Thank you for featuring Tarring, you must go back again and record the village in more detail.

Thanks for watching and for commenting. You are right, there is plenty of stuff missing from my video. The nature of the quick fire 'one walk a day' is unfortunately that so much gets missed. However, my aim is not to make a full documentary but shine a little light on such lovely places. Thanks for the additional information.

i grew up in Worthing , as a teenager i worked for a builder in Tarring , he lived in Glebe Road, you can see the name in the video, of course he had a plenty of work in a village dating from at least the 13 century. All my jobs were dirty , like digging a soak pit at the back of the church, dug up 2 residents in unmarked graves as well...just bones of course . We had to repair the flint cottages as well , they were built around 1520 i think . The interior walls and ceilings were plastered with straw and cow dung , not much fun breathing the dust from pulling down that muck. We of course had to rough plaster the walls to match the original bulging plaster. I was filthy after this job and the nice lady who lived there offered me a bath before i went home but the boss came in while i was stripping , sent me home still filthy, i think the fact that i was about 16 and the lady was ..to some , an attractive widow of about 48 had a lot to do with that .

What a shame the boss came in when he did! Sounds an amazing life you have had Anthony. Thank you do sharing your memories. Fascinating!

Brilliant! i lived in Highdown Avenue from 1975-1986 just round the corner in Thomas A’Beckett. I got my hair cut at Bill Berry’s in the High Street and went to West Tarring Boys club, also in the High Street! Brought back some great memories... thank you!

There is still a community feel in West Tarring and the ladies who look after the beautiful old church make visitors feel very welcome. I use to buy free range eggs from one of the houses in the high street - customers had to knock loudly on the lounge window and the owners would then bring half a dozen eggs round to the front door...much more fun than shopping at Tesco! Historically West Tarring was economically a very wealthy area due to agriculture and the wool trade 👍

    Greetings from Orlando.
My mother was from Worcester and my father was a GI. As a boy of 14 I lived with my grandmother in the midlands and spent many happy hours traveling around England. I find your explorations quite interesting and they allow me to continue to explore the land of my ancestors during these days of travel restrictions. Thank you.

West Tarring is just gorgeous!😍 I loved all those old buildings made of brick, flint, timbers & tiles! If only the streets were still made of cobblestone, I would had thought you had stepped onto a Jane Austin or Dickens movie set. The Old Palace w/ it's lead windows!💖 And the church w/ the steeple!!!💗 I got a chuckle out of the Parsonage Bar - bit of an oxymoron don't ya think?😂😂😂

I still live in Worthing, however, I tend to just drive past these local features and history literally on our doorstep. Great video, Richard.

I walk through the village and church grounds every day with the dog and have recently noticed two information boards, one outside the George and Dragon and one outside the connivence shop. These information boards have loads of little stories RE the points of interest in the surrounding area

Until 1858 the wills of local tradesmen, farmers, the middle classes and lower gentry living in West Tarring, as well as other nearby places, were proved in the local ecclesiastical courts of the Archbishop's Peculiar Jurisdiction of Pagham and Tarring. I presume that the Archbishop referred to here is the Archbishop of Canterbury. That might account for the larger than average Parish Church and the little palace.

Were there any fig trees surviving? What does a fig tree look like?
