    You can see Mike's brilliance at 19 here. Buddy saw it. You can still see it at 80. What a joy! Thanks Mike

      My pleasure for sure. And I agree about Mainieri. I am a drummer and Buddy Rich fan, but I have always loved Mike Mainieri and consider him to be one of the very best musicians Buddy ever played with - and that is saying something, considering Buddy played with Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, etc.

    Love these B&W videos of Playboy Penthouse.....they have such a cool vibe....
    It's also weird to see people pay attention to the music and not look at their phones every 2 seconds!

    Thanks for this video. I first watched this in 1961 in black and white t.v. while studying percussion at Roy Knapp School in Chicago.. Buddy is fantastic and Mike Mainieri was just 22 years old and he also did the music arrangements. Sam was and always will be the Most.

      You are very welcome. I love this comment: "Sam was and always will be the Most." !!:-)

      I loved the album Mr. Most did with Joe Farrell called 'Flute Talk', sadly out of print I believe.

    Great stuff. Many thanks to Cloudview for another delightful video. youtube must have put this in my recommendations because I recently watched and liked the two-part "Conversations with Mike Mainieri" interview in which he told some good stories about playing with Buddy Rich.

    Buddy always kills, and here in a small group context he shines even more with a very young Mike Manieri on vibes. Total control of dynamics and his hi-hat intro on the first tune is the coolest. Superb brush work on the second. Über hipness

    Buddy is so, So, SO VERY ELEGANT in this combo setting. Masterfully simple and contained. Such wonderful brush work. Damn.

      I of course agree completely. Thanks for your comment!

    Thanks again to Cloudview. I believe Buddy was on Rogers Drums at the time? I know Buddy really dug the Dynasonic snare drum at that time. and then again he went back to Slingerland and Ludwig and also dug the FIBES snare drum but no matter what drum manufacturer Buddy made those drums sound the greatest.

      Morbid - - - technically, he's right - - - there was only ONE Buddy Rich, Master Jazz Drummer and Drumming Legend Supreme.

    Pretty girls snapping their fingers: doesn’t get much better than that.
    And everyone plays so tastefully and creatively.

    I love this performance by Mike and Buddy is a kind mentor here. Nice. The Playboy Club is so demeaning as a concept-to women, the musicians, the phony listeners in the crowd trying to be cool and intellectual before they grovel so sex and drugs. So glad it's gone

    A heads up on Buddy appearances. Tonight, at least in the Philly area, he's on the Johnny Carson Show at 10 PM EDT on Antenna TV.

    • @erzug
      @erzug 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The show's from 1977 according to TV Guide online.

    • @cloudview747
      @cloudview747  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for the heads up! I immediately called my brother in law to copy it for me since my area does not carry Antenna TV. Do you want me to post it on YT when I get it from him?

    • @erzug
      @erzug 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was an interview only. Funny as hell, but no playing. @%^%%@ Buddy had just gotten back from a Japan tour. Tony Randall was the other featured guest.

      There are NO musical acts on the Tonight Show reruns. I hear that Carson's nephew is in charge and was too cheap to pay the extra $$$ for the musical numbers to appear. Just the scuttlebutt that I heard . . . .

    Hi. Great post. Came across two rare items. Do you by any chance have the audio/video of: Buddy Rich w/Jo Jones 1958 with the Bob Trendler Orchestra? Also, outtakes of Buddy Rich with Eddie Condon video late 40's? Thank you

    • @cloudview747

    Thanks for responding to my previous message. Do have any additional Buddy Rich episodes on Carson from the early 70'?. Also, I believe Artie Shaw and Buddy Rich performed together on Carson in 1972. Do you have this episode on video. Thanks for your feedback.
