    "Didn't Pebble Time have a color E-Ink display like five years ago?" Hey folks - popular question so I'll pin it for a bit. (I loved the Pebble too!) But no, Pebble Time used a low-power LTPS LCD. It wasn't E Ink (or even e paper); just a reflective LCD that maxed out at something like 64 colors and 182ppi.
    E-Ink Kaleido was just released this year. There was an earlier color E Ink (Triton) but as I mention in the video, Kaleido is much smaller and lighter technology, allowing for lightweight and thin e-readers like the PocketBook Color here.

      That's right. I believe they called it Memory LCD and it was made by Sharp. If I recall correctly the display itself had RAM in it that held image data, so the device could power down and stop refreshing it, but it was still LCD and still used some power to hold an image.
      Honestly I was surprised we didn't see it used more.

    I'm more impressed that the screen doesn't need to refresh the whole screen just to change some parts of the display.

    • @sur_shrimpster
      @sur_shrimpster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      E-Paper screens have always been able to do this. As I have experimented with E-Inks myself, the reason the whole screen refreshes is because if you keep applying a constant charge to the capsule the pigments will get polarized (become positive or negative). This means the pixels will not change and stick to the respective opposite poles forever. That's why if you look closely, on a refresh, the screen turns black, then white. This allow the pixels to be pulled equally by both charges and "resets" them if you will.

    • @LostieTrekieTechie
      @LostieTrekieTechie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      With e-paper display, partial refreshes tend to lead to ghosting. Useful for small animations/popups, but not for anything approaching video.

      I'm already getting such a weird feeling reading comics that are in colour on a regular greyscale e-paper display (on my Likebook Mimas), and the comics I do read tend to look tiny on a 6" display, like on my Kobo Clara HD, so I'm trying to resist buying a Boox Poke2 colour, which a local distributor has for sale for $430 (SGD), and wait out for E-ink to release a Kaleido display in 7.8" or 10.3", hoping that Boox and/or Likebook then makes use of that. (I have multiple e-readers as part of some research and community support stuff I'm doing, but I'm also trying to resist buying into $430 first-generation technology)

      On the other hand, it does something other E-Readers can't wich is colour. In black and white e-Readers are superb as we all know, but colour is pretty new here, so to compare both display types might be fair in a way.
      As seen here, the colours aren't the greatest and the resolution is quite low. So if you plan on reading a ton of Comics or books with many illustrations, you are propably better off with a LCD or LED Display. But if those Displays hurt your eyes after a while, or you still for the most part consume Text, the colour E-Ink is propably the better choice.
      Anyway, hope to see further improvements as well. Gotta love E-Ink displays. And once they can produce crystal clear colour Images - fantastic!

    • @dinomightstudios4119
      @dinomightstudios4119 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I see color e-readers as the alternative to paper. We need to stop cutting down trees and wasting paper and if books were made into e-readers, that would cut down on costs, especially in education. Updating information and textbooks would be instant and wouldn’t need to waste production costs to print new editions. Just needs to be faster and smoother and made cheaper to manufacture and we’ll be headed in a healthier direction for our planet.

      It was a really cool concept though but the greediness of a company that made this device killed it... I still have it in use and love it. In many respects it was ahead of its time: Bright HD OLED screen and wireless charging, when barely any company offered it (definitely not the Iphone), subtle "always on" notification on the backside, even browsing is good on the E-Ink screen. And - great repairability: Detach one screw and pop it open, like the ancient Nokia phones. Replace what you need to and click it shut again. Downsides: There is not a real good power saving mode which would have been possible with the amazing E-ink screen. Just receiving calls, Messages, E-Mail with a calendar and a standby time of weeks would have made a massive advantage for travellers. So it is aging, but still good usable for everyday tasks. I made a Zoom session recently - just works fine.

    When I had to move a few years ago I simply didn't have the room for my collection of books so I started to read pretty much exclusively on my phone and Amazon Fire tablet. I'd never owned an actual Kindle as my smart device had always done the job for when I couldn't take a physical book with me, I still dislike how Amazon killed Stanza on the iPhone.
    It was during the first lockdown here in the UK that I finally decided to get a Kindle. I didn't get anything new, I bought a 2nd gen Kindle Paperwhite, and it was the best reading decision I've never made. It's not the eink display or anything like that but that it is distraction free. When I'm reading I'm not getting notifications or alerts, I can just sit back and lose myself in the book.

    this is why I wanted a 2-in-1 convertible tablet/laptop that has an e-ink screen. It's main use is for documents, school or specialized purposed device. The main selling point on this technology is the battery life of the device. For students, a device like that can help them breeze through an entire week without charging, making it more reliable for notetaking, making research papers, assignments etc.

    its actually better than i was expecting in many regards (very responsive for e ink, and its pretty easy to watch videos) but the resolution is pretty bad sadly, which is something i was looking forward to. however the phone performing above expectation in almost all areas and the killer battery life more than makes up for it. I don't miss colour 99% of the time when reading on my Kindle since I don't read comics on it. I don't even read manga really, even though that's also B&W most of the time. When it comes to e-readers however, aside from the astonishingly slow refresh rate and how scrolling seems more akin to what we had with the very first smart devices over ten years ago, I prefer the e-ink style over say using my Samsung Galaxy phone simply because it looks more LIKE paper. I would rather read a physical book than use my phone...so these e-readers resonate with me on those levels specifically. But I definitely can see the frustration with how they are working and their limitations...which I fully expect to be corrected with time. Very excited to start seeing colored e-readers. We're probably years away from achieving even standard printer quality in color, but I think that the current tech or at least the next gen will be quite serviceable for more basic color functions, like graphs and figures, where you care less about how beautiful the colorations are. Personally, I don't expect e-paper to replace my screens for high-end coloration and refresh rate tasks like watching videos. We'll probably get a 60+ fps e-paper someday, but I wouldn't prioritize it.

    I would love that energy spent on refresh rates. If it could hit 30fps (30hz?) We are looking at a tablet alternative. Once you do more than just read books that’s what it is.
    I use my Onyx boox because my eyes hurt after 12 hours on an iPad or Cintiq, but a better refresh rate for note taking and drawing on regular android apps would easily justify the price for me and an upgrade.

    I think it has a certain charm to it, personally. My first ever device besides a $20 MP3 player was a 4th gen Kindle Touch several years ago. I read the Hunger Games, played little word games and stuff, and it was an early window to the internet that 12 year old me really didn't need. Regardless, the Pocketbook Go reflects much of that charm and nostalgia I get with e-ink stuff these days, with the bonus of colors. It feels novel, even if it's lower quality. I'm personally a big fan.
    Plus, because Humble Bundle, most of my books these days are on PDF format, sitting dormant on my backup drive because reading them on my computer or phone for long periods of time strains my eyes far too much.

The only use context I can see are comics. In theory books on art, architecture of photography could also benefit - but the low quality of the images doesn't make it seem like a good fit for these uses.

    I'm really glad color displays are getting better, but for me... The things I want to see in color, I want to see on a bigger screen. Especially for splash pages. Or a two-page ereader that folds, but I'd still want it to be at least double the size of the ereaders I use for novels. Im gonna be reading BD in there, not manga (a regular ereader is already perfect for manga), it's meant to be displayed much bigger and let's be honest, some of them would be illegible on a 6-inch screen.
    My dilemma is that waiting for it to get better also means not supporting it while it gets better, which could prevent it from continuing to improve for lack of budget.
    But yeah, give me an A4 or bigger, two-page ereader if you want me to buy a color e-reader. Until then I'll keep to novels and risk the backllit screens for comics.
