  • Never great when you drop your motorcycle, but I dropped my Svartpilen 401 - luckily after fitting Oggy Knobbs (crash protection). Here's a run down on the damage, how the Oggy Knobbs (crash posts) held up, what I did wrong and overall thoughts.
    If you're a new rider a highly recommend investing in good quality crash protection from a well known brand. The KTM Duke Oggy Knobbs do fit the Svartpilen 401 2021, so check out my other video if you're looking for options.

    Takes enormous courage Kris to say what happened. A huge sense of pride becomes the greatest hurdle. I’m sure parts will get replaced & knowing it’s hit the deck takes the pressure off. Imagine the sense of shame having your bike fall to the side washing it on the centre stand 😎

      When these things happen it's always a good reminder to get back to basics and not get overconfident. Definitely the pride that was most bruised from this one!

    So pleasing when other riders share rookie mistakes. Thanks Kris as peps who say it’s never happened to them are bending the truth. One of my most embarrassing ones was performing a u turn on my house mates bike and not realising the turning circle wasn’t as tight as my own bike. Full lock, slight touch of the front brake and down she went. 👍😎🇦🇺

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea that's the worst, especially if anyone else is watching! I try and avoid even covering the front brake now so I don't panic and hit it at full lock. You really REALLY notice the turning circle difference between bikes in those situations too.

      @@MotoJournoKris Same. That particular one was in the mid 90’s. To make it worse I was also racing in the Australian 250 cc production series. So the others who witnessed it had also seen me race at Phillip Island in the supporting classes to when the WSB teams were the draw cards. So it made it even more embarrassing especially considering the persons bike I dropped became my team manager. 😂

    Thanks for your candor talking about this topic. I'm looking at svartpilen for my first bike and now I know to invest in the protection.

      I definitely think it's one of the best investments in my mind. One drop and it normally pays for itself. I've also had people knock over my bike when it's been parked in the past, which could be a consideration depending where you park.

    A good tip i got when walking your bike around is to stand on the side opposite the kick stand and push it around with the kickstand down, that way if it falls away from you, the kickstand will catch it

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That can definitely work, but you need to be careful the stand doesn't flip up, I used to use that trick getting bikes off a rear stand and it worked very well.

    I removed my fork reflector with a tape measure blade. Then used rubbing alcohol to get the remaining glue off. Same with the WP sticker. Looks clean.

    I'll be looking into the T-Rex Racing engine guard. Also think the MNNTHBX sliders fit the Pilen design better. 👍

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The T-Rex case covers and crash bars look good. The MNNTHBX sliders look stylish but they are so low profile, I wonder how much protection they'd offer compared to the Oggys. I wouldn't have wanted the Oggys any narrower.

    • @papersplease

    Hi Kris
    Sorry about that, it could have been worse.
    Have had a few close and not so close calls. Dropped a friend's bike was pushing it out of a constricted driveway next to where l live. The way it is designed you cannot push the bike without maybe catching on the bushes lining the driveway.
    So unfortunately that happened and the thing came down, fortunately it had the bark busters and the vegetation did help. Best of all it was around 4AM so noone was about but l think they had my small scream of frustration as the bike went over as l tried to fight a touring bike and ended up on top of it.
    All things told there was not any visible damage to the bike except my ego, so l was quite happy to return it to its owner before l suffered further accidents.
    The worst l had was when l was cleaning the bike outside the building. Unfortunately the ground is slanted and l used to put a brick under it to sort of even things. Where l stay, if it rains it rains forever, so the ground is usually green and the driveway has algae growing on it and so can be very slippery hence the other drop.
    On this occasion my mistake was not extending the kickstand far enough and resting it on the brick. Was cleaning the bike and the bicycle when horror of horrors l saw the bike topple over. Damage, a very bespoke rear tail light, the indicators came off etc. Had to remove back bit, resolder the tail light as the cables had stretched and become detached as well as try to re-attach the now limp and drooping indicator. Just about managed to do it all.
    Sadly there were scratches to the bike particularly to one of the covers. Thankfully it had crash bars or l might have ended up with a very expensive repair bill for engine or something.
    Anyway it happens to the best of us. So nowadays l always double check the kickstand whenever l park the bike. When l push the bike l let it lean into me not away from me.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely my thoughts, I was glad for the crash protection as I think I got away pretty light on the damage. Keeping it leaning into us when moving, ensuring the side-stand is fully down and being careful the bike won't catch on anything are all great tips!

    Bar-end and levers don't matter. Shame about the exhaust cover. Rub it down. I bet it was easy to pick up. I got off my Aerox 155 scooter last year, didn't put the side stand down properly. The scooter followed me. I always walk my bigger bikes out of parking places while sat on the seat, My SCR950 is 248 kg tanked-up.
    I prefer the looks of your 401 to my 390 Duke.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  ปีที่แล้ว

      Much much safer walking them out from on the bike. I've had a few close calls with stands, even with the bike in gear there's a distance they'll roll if you haven't already rolled them in gear to a stop. I might take the cover off and give it a paint for the exhaust.

    Wondering if the svartpilen 401 can be converted into an adventure bike?

    • @papersplease
      @papersplease ปีที่แล้ว

      I want to do this. Tank is only 9.5 litres, so you'll probably need to carry a few bottles extra.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably depends how far you want to take it. For a proper ADV the 'bars need to be much taller to comfortably stand on the bike, they are much too low for me to do that comfortably for any distance, which means lengthening brake lines, etc. Although to be fair the 390 ADV has the same issue.
      As papersplease mentioned the tank capacity is a bit of an issue although not insurmountable. You'd want crash bars too, hand guards, and I'd be interesting to see how the suspension handled rougher roads, I've had the forks bottom out occasionally, where the 390 ADV was a bit better in that situation.

    • @michaelstewart9308

      I plan on getting one and turning it into an adventure bike, there's a lot of aftermarket for these like crash bars, radiator guards, engine guards, luggage carriers, people mount Jerry cans onto them.
      I'd suggest getting either a pre 2020 model or fitting a pre 2020 exhaust to a newer one because there's about 1-2 inches of ground clearance lost with the newer exhaust
