I just want to say that I really appreciate how much you young men appreciate Layne/AIC-they were certainly something special. I realize I may be a bit biased, as the 90s were my late teens and early twenties years-but that era of music is just the absolute best! 🤘🏻♥️♾️

In a few ways this performance was the final goodbye of the Grunge era:
    - Kurt had passed away 2 years before, ending Nirvana in its tracks
    - Soundgarden was disintegrating and would break up the next year
    - Pearl Jam and STP were still going, but shifted to a more alternative rock sound
    - Nu-metal and more accessible alternative rock bands exploded on the scene and took over radioplay
    - At this point, Alice in Chains had not toured in nearly 3 years. They would only perform four more shows before going on hiatus
    - Layne’s former girlfriend died later that year, sending him into a spiral of drug abuse and depression. He became a recluse and died six years later

That nod from Jerry sums up the entire show in many ways. The band was very uncertain about Layne’s health and ability to perform at the level needed for this acoustic set. He’d been pretty rocky at the rehearsals he actually showed up to and most of them he was a no show. I’m pretty sure “Down in a Hole” was the second song of the set and Layne has a really big moment at the end of that first chorus and whether or not he pulls off that lick is going to set the tone for the entire set. He nails it and you can see in Jerry’s face just how proud he is of his brother in that moment as he nods to his other band mates that this is going to be the show they’d all prepared and hoped for. Amazing.

"Don't Follow" has a bit of a country vibe to it as well, though I'd say it's definitely more of a "southern rock" than it was country. Something akin to songs from the heyday of southern rock back in the 70's, from bands such as Jackson Browne, The Eagles, Steve Miller Band, Allman Brothers, Skynard, CCR, and Neil Young.

This was Alice in Chains' first live performance in 2.5 years. Layne was clean the prior year in 1995. That year, Layne Staley sang for Madseason with Guitarist Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Bassist John Baker Saunders of The Walkabouts, and Drummer Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees. This was a Super Group that was formed to support themselves to become drug free. I recommend checking out Madseason live at The Moore Theater 1995.

He is on letterman months after this and you can see his teeth.
They played sludge factory a bunch of times because he kept messing up the same line, being the first time they played the song live its not a big deal.
Vedder messed up lyrics on Black unplugged and its a legendary performance.
They re did to make sure it was right for album.

AIC is so hard to listen to in retrospect knowing what will happen and then that much of these lyrics where literal and predictive on Layne's end. A cry for help and even him acknowledging no one was hearing it and how that weighted on his heart. Then here to find him so passionate and soulful yet withering away. You really can't deny their potency. A eulogy and I love it as I regret it as this an example of transcending the music and art.

Alice In Chains are a rad band. They have a number of really awesome songs, they have an air of mystique, killer riffs and haunting vocal melodies. But if I had to name my top 50 favorite bands I doubt they’d make the list. They’re not even my favorite band to do an Unplugged session with MTV. All that said, I think this is hands down the greatest Unplugged session of the entire series and it’s not even close. Every aspect of this is a 10. The band wasn’t in a confident place when they took the gig and their rehearsals weren’t that great either, but all that fell away when they came on stage. The lighting, the stage setting, the mixing, the shot compositions, the edits, everyone who worked on this thing brought their A game and deserves their flowers. Hell, I like to think that the interns making coffee runs for the crew were on one that day.
I genuinely believe this show is one of the truly great moments between music and broadcast television. The Unplugged series was great because of all the inspired work that went into to making each show special and unique and this show was absolutely its apex. Has anyone ever heard an acoustic bass guitar sound this good before or since?

Please react to Jerry's solo stuff !!
Boggy Depot (1998) see's Jerry explore a softer bluesy side, and has a wide variety of artists who play on the record.
Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2 (2002) is "The meanest thing I've done since Dirt" (March 2000 quote from Jerry), and is arguably the darkest thing Jerry's ever recorded (especially the lyrics and backstory behind the album)
Brighten (2021) see's Jerry take a country turn to his music
I Want Blood (2024) is quite a bit like Alice, but also is different in the best ways possible.

As much as I thoroughly love and adore Layne/AIC, I don't listen to him/them very often-it just hurts me down to my soul-understanding with great clarity from my own struggles with addiction to H. Luckily, I managed, after years of trying and failing, to get clean and (eventually, finally) remain so. I only wish Layne could've found a way to do so as well. Oftentimes, I feel some sense of survivor's guilt-just so much talent gone, while I'm still here just being (plain old) me.

I love the grunge journey you guys are on, especially loved the Superunknown reaction, if you guys loved Chris Cornell I think you would enjoy Audioslave, specifically their self titled album which is in my opinion unskippable. The band is Chris Cornell and then all the band members of Rage Against the Machine, apart from Zack, the vocalist.

@@theeJAYBUDshow Please don’t sleep on Strapping Young Lad. Devin Townsend’s an insane singer, maybe the best ever, and the Self-Titled red album is a great place to start. Alien is a close 2nd or alternate best album. Their drummer Gene Hoglan is also GOAT’ed by many people.

Just to say, Layne hadn't lost any of his teeth yet. This is a rumor that goes around all tge time. If you look at mad season live at the Moore less than a year before his teeth were fine. Around the time of MTV unplugged they shot the Nona files and you can see all his teeth though they have deteriorated and are not in good health. I think he is super self conscious and is trying to keep his head down hide them here but they are there or his whole face would have lost structure. According to his father he started to loose them around 1998 after he had started to become reclusive. In 1999 Alice recorded Died and Get born again and I think he may have lost a couple but then but who knows for sure.

I have mixed feelings about the MTV unplugged sessions because I generally think the studio version of every song is better than the unplugged versions, especially for Pearl Jam. Best version of nutshell though obv

Gotta disagree, mostly because I thought Ten was over-produced (too much reverb on the vocals). With the exception of Alive, due to the guitar solo, I enjoyed every one of their songs Unplugged just a touch more, especially Porch, Oceans, and Black. Just an opinion, though, we're both right.

So…kids….after one has been doing a drug like heroin for so long you no longer get high from it but you have to keep taking it or else you will get sick. The fact that you guys are so surprised at Layne’s appearance tells me that you haven’t been around people who are on hard drugs so you don’t know that at this point one does better high than in withdrawal. I’m glad you don’t have a lot of experience seeing people in the thralls of addiction. Keep it that way please. This was six years before he died so his decline was apparent but he definitely got so so so much worse. He weighed 86 lbs at death.
