Yup lots of my friends and even female family members did separate from kdrama. They said korean Thai stories are so redundant and cliches so they move on to cdramas. For me more about acting. I find many of Korean /Thai dramas have severely over exaggerated facial expressions and unnecessary screaming which annoys the heck out of me.
This emerging trend of adaptaing danmei after the massive success of Guardian and The Untamed is inevitable. I’m excited but also scared for the increasing scrutiny upon the danmei genre thats bound to happen. Im also hoping that these adaptations will be sincere, or at the very least respectful of its source materials.
I'm going to be honest, not gonna lie Word Of Honor really exceeded my expectations. They set the bar too high even though they are low -budget (which I found ridiculous because it's so pretty oriented and clean). The way they adapt from novel isn't far and it is top-tier!!!
It's soooooo pretty, aesthetically it's gorgeous. The fight scenes and the scenery shots, when I heard it's low budget I couldn't believe it, they've done wonders.
Gong Jun is literally killing it in Word of honour,, I actually got hooked to the drama because of his acting,, He literally plays two characters in his one role a lively flirtatious and scary ghost leader + the rain scene I literally cried
Faraway Wonderers is now called Word of Honor. And so far Gong June’s acting is absolutely great. The chemistry between the characters is pretty amazing. I highly recommend it.
*Word of Honor* punched me in the face. I wasn't expecting it to be that good! I was just honestly curious because it had been sitting on my recs, ignored, but then I caved in. Watching it is the best and worst decision in my life because now I have to wait an entire month or two for the series to finish airing. Thank goodness I'm job hunting right now so the wait isn't so excruciating.
I dont expect anything from this drama. But, not for actors or direction, is about scrip and production. I read the book, i love it, and is very long, had a lot of characters, very hard situations. I really belive is very dificult to adapt to something close to book.

Word of Honor(A Tale of a Wanderer) is doing a really really great job. I am loving it a lot so far. Acting was good for me, the story never bored me, and the bl censorship is almost non-existent. I am satisfied.
I mean I would love it but I bet it would be quite hard and high budgeted 😅 You know with the whole System plot. But then again Chinese production does wonders in special effects (if the budget is high) so why not?
I came back here to watch your early thoughts on Word of Honor. Nobody would believe that it went from “30 episodes is too long” to “I can’t get off the mountain.” How amazing it is for us to get such an epic TV show. Let’s hope the rest of the BL dramas surprise us too.

Word of honour is amazingly captivating. The chemistry and comeradie between the two main characters are very convincing. Brilliantly cast and brilliantly performed by both actors. They seem to get on so well on and off set. Love everything about this show. Touching philosophy. Zhang Zhehan played the tormented soul role to perfection. Love the way he expressed quiet love in a subtle way - with his eyes, smiles and silence. Simon Gong played the frivolous flirt turned demon role in a very cute and most convincing way - a joy to watch. The two of them together - it's a real WOW factor!
Very similar to the situation that The Untamed was in when production was still in the work. The criticisms and expectations were high for the actors and script. Tian Guan Ci Fu live adaptation is going to be face with similar challenges because the novel itself has set the expectations to be very high. I hope that they are able to give us a good casting for the characters. As a novel fan, it is really hard to see someone as Hua Cheng or Xie Lian because those two characters are exceptionally beautiful and well-developed in the novel. Whoever is cast will definitely have a lot of expectations to meet. Not asking for much but just want actors who understand the characters and is able to execute and bring them to life. I don’t want to compare but I do have to credit the cast of The Untamed (especially Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo). The casting is successful in The Untamed because of how each actors & actress are able to portray the characters in their own ways and bring them to life to show us all. Lastly, I really do hope that the script writer and the team stick with the original script. One of the reasons why The Untamed is very successful is because of how closely the adaptation script is with the novel. As a novel fan and viewer, I want to see something that is well-thought out and planned than something rushed and put together to gain fame. Sorry for the long comment, but I am looking forward to these BL adaptations in 2021. ☺
I’m scared too honestly and very worried but at least they don’t have to worry TOO much about censorship in TGCF cause it didn’t show any explicit scene besides that cave scene and the monk commenting on Xie Lian’s “dark essence” lmao but yeah, I really hope the actors can really portray that kind of relationship that HuaLian has.
@@AlvinaYunoa I think it's more difficult to portray Xie Lian and Hua Cheng's relationship as platonic than Wangxian. Sure, for the most part its just the 2 of them living together and solving all the issues/mysteries around them, which can be represented as "bromance" but how on Earth are they gonna explain Hua Cheng's 800+ years of devotion, the 1000 Gods temple and his entire life and death revolved around Xie Lian.
When it comes to Immortality I'm mostly worried about the fact that it really is driven forward by the relationship plot. In The Untamed, for example, the chemistry between the two leads was definitely important, but their "love" was kind of a decided thing from the very start, so what you concentrate the most on is the Wei Wuxian's story itself and all the schemes around him. Although there is a BIG story in Immortality too, I feel that your main focus of interest is still Shizun & Mo Ran and what happens between them... If it gets changed too much or they can't pull off the chemistry, I don't even know what it's going to be like. Also, too much cg required which is always a worrying point for me.
True, I really hope they got enough creativity in there with those changes in the script that it’ll still be the same feelings but we’ll be missing A LOT of their relationship in those 10+ years

I wouldn't worry about the CGI because Tencent invested a HUGE amount of money for this drama with new technology stuff and so on so I'm not worried about that.
Yep this one is my biggest worry. Their story was so....passionate and complicated, I just don't think they'll be able to portray it properly. Like at all~
Word of Honor is so darn good. First costume and wuxia drama and I was mind blown with everything in the first ep alone. I didn't expect much and went into it not knowing anything (not read the book), but I was so overwhelmed with emotions and instantly felt for Shu's character and WKX who was introduced later on. I remember that scene where Shu walked out in the nighttime with snow drifting down, and with the ost playing in the back...the emotion was of pure loneliness and I can't believe it was only ep 1. You really feel for the main characters and care for them very early on. Can't praise it enough, I only wish I knew Chinese literature so to appreciate the poems WKX recite from time to time...they're quite beautiful.
I'm suffering because word of honor is still airing and I literally watched all 12 episodes in a few days and now I hAVE TO WAIT. I CANNOT WAIT. It's seriously so ridiculously good and well done. I just wasn't expecting it to be this good tbh. Y'all need to watch it, I have no words to explain how well chosen the cast is, how incredibly amazing the chemistry of the main actors is... just.. alkfks
for every bl drama there are dozens and dozens of dramas with s female lead and a male lead coming out every year so i really don't get the rivalry people say bl dramas will face. if the audience enjoys watching this type relationship every bl drama has a chance of being successful. i have really high hopes for chasing the light, it's kinda sad we'll have to wait so long for its release
it is still new on the field so everyone is jumping on it, it is worrisome especially since many people didn't get the memo that what made the untamed boom isn't the bl factor itself but the execution of the drama i am very excited as a bl huge fan but also very worried since some of these books don't deserve to be wasted
It's problematic because the central agency that grants airing license to dramas always likes to "balance the playfield" with a variety of genres. With so many BL adaptations coming in a short span of time, the agency might decide to space out the airing schedule or worse, put a temporary ban on the genre to make room for others. It's never a good idea in China to be the one hot thing that gathers a lot of government attention, because it means more scrutiny and potential censorship, especially for a very controversial topic of BL.
See that’s the problem there all in the romance category the problem with the BL adaptations are the Main couple won’t end up together so unless the storyline is actually good they can’t compete with the heterosexual romance movie since we can’t get the same satisfaction of a “happy ending” .
In large part it's fanatic stans of certain actors trying to sabotage shows that aren't done by their actors, so that their own idol's shows do better. If it was actually about enjoying the *genre* for more people then there wouldn't be as much drama.
And now I was obsessed for Word of Honor, oh my god seriously this live adaptation was so so soooo good! I really love how wen kexing really doted zhou zizhu but goes crazy toward his comrades 🤣
I knew a guy from saudi arabia, he told me that they censured everything there but people were always pirating stuff so it was really stupid 😂. It's probably similar in China
@@gloriataro3509 BL is primarily targeted for an older audience aka R18, not for kids. If kids were watching it, its their fault for looking into it and allowing themselves to consume it the first place, not the production team.
TU, WOH, and Guardian had a lot censored, but the acting, the director, and the script was really well designed and not far from the novel. Censorship is not an excuse for crappy drama adaptation.
It's honestly sad that Priest hasn't had a proper good adaption yet, she deserves it. Personally I'm looking forward to Immortality/Hao Yi Xing since 2HA was a novel I really enjoyed reading. I like the casting so lets see how the show will look like.
@@harleynguyen5301 out of the adaptations that will come out, there are sha po lang, mo du, tian ya ke, shan he biao li. i personally recommend read qi ye first before tian ya ke but you can read tianyake alone. but tianyake is not fully translated yet so i recommend (again) to read qi ye first. and please read liu yao cause they are bunch of babies, but it still not fully translated. pssttt read sha po lang and mo du ftw

She found the live action's ending so bad that she wrote a whole 10k words extra "fix it" chapter to fix the ending in a rage (bc of fans too). But just because she didn't like it doesnt mean others didnt of course.
I know a lot of people were very skeptical about Gong Jun being able to portray WKX right but I gotta say - he absolutely nailed it. He's cheeky and subtle, yet obvious in his longing and desperation and when that flip switches, he is SCARY as hell.
Word of Honor has been such a pleasant surprise. I've been following its development since last year, but didn't expect it to become a big hit. It's a really good drama that follows the source material as closely as possible and the two male leads have intense chemistry (I think I've raved about this part many times now) ❤ IMO, it set the bar high for the rest of the BL adaptations coming up.
For their mental health, I hope that the actors cast for Tian Guan Ci Fu can live in the same bubble that the boys in The Untamed lived on. They didn't know how big of a project it was until it was too late so they didn't have time to worry or stress about their performance. My most anticipated relased is also Sha Po Lan... let's pray for a good drama! and good luck to all of them! I really hope we get to enjoy all 11 dramas soon :)
its impossible, the whole thing is huge especially because TGCF is the untamed 'brother drama' by the same author I hope the actors don't get too stressed about it though :(

People go watch Word of Honor, you will not regret it. I haven't seen gaurdian but I've heard enough criticism of it that I have an idea of how it went. I started word of honor after someone recced it in fb & I binged first 6 episodes this afternoon. Not one moment felt boring. For the fans of Priest, this series will be a delight granted it doesn't get censored. ❤❤
I agree Word of Honor is absolutely good! Guardian wasn't the best but the chemistry between the two main leads was so sweet and funny and gad perfect. I am so excited for more Priest novel adaptations! 🔥♥️

Came back to this video after finishing WOH, which took 1st place in my heart from the untamed. I think it's gonna be really hard for other dramas to beat it for me, because wenzhou are legendary - the chemistry between Zhang Zhe Han and Gong Jun is something really special. It's funny because i was kinda reluctant to start watching it and it actually blew me away with how good it is. Also Gong Jun did an amazing job, I can't imagine anyone else doing this role, thank god the original cast couldn't make it. Still very looking forward to next bl dramas!

Priest absolutely deserves a good adaptation. Saddened that none of them sound like they're too hopeful right now but we'll have to wait and see at this point.
I've watch The Untamed, Guardian and Word Of Honor. All those 3 dramas really amazing. Their storyline, the casts of the characters and even the quality of the dramas were great too. You can see the chemistry of all the lead characters are indeed brilliant. For me, no regrets. I will recommend those 3 dramas to those fans who love danmei. For now, those are the next on my list for the year 2021; Heaven Official's Blessing, Winner Is King, and Immortality.
I love that I'm watching this in July 2021 after getting hooked into c-drama by Word of Honor. The 2 worrisome weaknesses you listed, Gong Jun's experience and the adaptation content ended up being strengths... I only wish they had given us some more insight into ZZH's character (the way we can see in the novel) but even if it was a low budget production, it ended up amazing. I'm really happy netflix picked it up and that there are resources for those of us who had not been exposed to this great fandom. Thank you for the videos!
I recommend Killer and Healer. It is so good but really underrated. The two male leads have such good chemistry and their soulmate/bromance bond is so strong.
I'm surprised to hear that so many people wanted Lu Han to be cast as Xie Lian! I guess on my corner of the internet we were all heavily rooting for Song Jiyang (played Xiao Xingchen in CQL/The Untamed) to play him. There are SO MANY edits where people painted XL's hair over pics of him. It really fits!!
I'm currently watching Words of Honor, The Faraway Wanderers adaptation. It's really good! I can't stop watching the moment I watched Episode 1. Really, go watch it! You won't be disappointed. Gong Jun did a great job in acting as Wen Kexing, same as Zhang Zhehan as Zhou Zishu.
What I really liked about Sha Po Lang is that all the other plots going on are not just wallpaper for the romance/couple drama, but it's a REALLY high-stakes military and political thriller. I grew up reading my dad's Tom Clancy and Isaac Asimov library. I hope the adaptation does justice to that as well, like you feel like it's a serious existential crisis for the world around them not just a question of whether the couple has a happy ending or not.

It’s all about the money,everyone wants a part of it ever since THE UNTAMED blew up.Good luck to any drama being as good as that in this genre.It was only subtle and two incredibly talented male leads with a fantastic script writer and directors without focusing entirely on the love story between male leads.

@@igot7armytaekook308 l think, THE UNTAMED with its unique story, and cast, cannot be, and should not be compared to other new series of the same genre, rather viewers should view each series as something new, and judge for themselves, if they like it or not. Every one can switch any series off, if it does not match the expectation. I am watching now WORD OF HONOUR, and l enjoy the two leads very much, but would never compare this story, this relationship between the two leads with the characters of THE UNTAMED. This is just my opinion.
Guardian had huge success before the Untamed. IP to drama adaptions are not uncommon there are many other examples. Often they can be successful because of already established fanbases behind the novel. It think it's quite unfair to cast off many other's hard work just because you are a fan of 1 specific drama. Broaden your view and you will find there are many other great novels and dramas out there.

I'm so worried for heaven official's casting. From the rumors I've heard, they might have cast someone just for the looks and not considering the acting ability so that would be a real disappointment if it's true.
It is said the some of the casts of the untamed will casted on heaven official's blessing... so far song jiyang and wen zhuliu's actor are the only two to dropped hints but who knows...
Looking forward to Hao Yi Xing Immortality. Loved the original Erha with lovable and rich main and support characters. Dream castings. Costumes look beautiful. Artistic design looks amazing. Dubs by the actors themselves. I have confidence in Luo Yunxi ability to carry Chu Wanning and Chu Xun. Hope to see more of LYX sleeves actions, since CWN have those scenes in the book. A bit worried about the director and camera work. The details of costume and set design look pretty on point with the original story.
'Guardian' is extremely successful simply because of its 2 main actors BAI YU and ZHU YI LONG. Their acting, handsomeness and the chemistry between them saved the whole drama to fall into ruin. 🤨 Still ' Guardian' is my favorite because of the main actors/characters. 😊
Can't wait for Heaven Official Blessing!! I wish Song Jiyang get casted as Xie Lian. When I read the novel TGCF, my thought automatically wander about how elegant Song Jiyang is as 'Xiao Xingchen' in The Untamed and how he pretty much exude the same aura and vibe as Xie Lian. Not to mention he looks really good in white robe.
I'm not surprised about the surge in upcoming bl dramas since the Untamed was successful and much loved. But in the end, it'll all comes down to is how well it's executed in terms of character and plot, not just visuals. edit - I just realised Heaven's Official Blessing is also by the same author as the Untamed. I thought the synopsis looked good and now that I know it's by the same author, I'm sure the plot would no doubt be intricate. They've set the bar so high.
OH MY GOD I squeeealed when I saw they were adapting 撒野!!! I listened to the 广播剧 (audio drama) for this twice, and each time I fell more in love with the characters, the themes, and the inspirational messages of this masterpiece. The voice actors and production crew for the audio drama did such a fantabulous job that I'm not sure if the live action can top that...but fingers crossed! Same with 杀破狼, the first audio drama I listened to that also had an amazing cast of voice actors (so many of priest's works are being adapted yay!) Also, thank you AvenueX for your wonderful channel. I only recently discovered your other videos, and it's such a joy to find someone fluent in both Mandarin and English sharing her passion for Chinese BL drama...I feel I have found a community of like-minded fans, and it's a welcome respite from the chaos around me!
The most one I am most worried about is Immortality. The book is really heartbreaking and X rated... Not sure they are going to do a lot of the book... If they release Tian Guan Ci Fu I will die of joy 😱 But I have medium expectations for any adaptations... I am also pretty excited for ShaPoLang. The characters are really well written. But if they make it a typical period drama (like what they have done with Douluo Continent) then it will be very disappointing
I listened to the audio drama of Immortality without knowing the premise of the story and my jaw dropped at the level of adult content in the first couple of episodes lol

My top 3 in terms of anticipation based on my enjoyment of the novels: 1) Immortality (2ha, but I'm sad cause I know the censorship will be strong with this one) 2) Winner is King (Sha Po Lang, the english title is a BIG spoiler lol) 3) Chasing the Light (SAYE, I hope they manage to keep the same balance between the level of angst and fluff as in the novels) + Honorable mentions 4) Heaven Official's Blessing (but I doubt the drama will do it justice) 5) Mo Du Edit: the fact that I've read all these novels 🥴 some of them are 900k words long lmao crazy
Ngl I feel like 2ha will be the hardest to pull off a good drama adaptation, even more than Tian guang ci fu. AND imagine making the viewers hate the male lead for 1/3 of the story (cuz ofc the *plot*) and make us fall in love with him again. That's going to be a hard feat to pull off with the censorships. I can't even imagine the direction that this drama will be heading toward. After all the censorships, I feel like more than half of what makes this story good will be cut off. If someone have any ideas on how they'll pull it off, you are more than welcome to enlighten me.
True. TGCF just need to alter the "borrowing spiritual energy" part and the rest 99% of the book is save to be filmed. For 2ha, it was like at least 50% of the book had to be taken out for how steamy it was. The drama team added some new plots to compensate the parts where they have to cut out. However, judging from the leaked BTS I think they still manage to keep the main plot line and the feel of the original story.
Hearing her say that 'tian ya ke's' episodes were too long for an adaptation of a short novel then remembering her final review on the actual drama saying that the episodes were too short and the ending was rushed made me smile 😆
So many shows to look forward to, I already seen WOH and it was amazing, especially between the two main characters. I'm looking forward to watching The story of the bat, just because mao zi Jun is in it. I watched him in Killer and Healer and he was phenomenal. I'm very excited for saye but a bromance can't cut it the actors are perfect for our boys I wish it could be made in Taiwan with those boys for Sha po Lang I want the person that made Ying yang master on it
2:35 Oh wow so Bi Wenjun will be in a BL drama too! I've actually known him for a couple of years now. He participated in the same idol competition show "Idol Producer" as Cai Xukun, but unfortunately didn't debut. The final group had 9 members but he was ranked the 10th. Back then he left a big impression on me because: 1) He's top 3 best vocalist on that entire show. His singing is flawless even without a mic and background music. 2) He had no screentime because he just didn't talk - just super quiet all the time - to the point where I was like "where is he? is he eliminated already? why don't I remember it?" 3) He is honestly one of the most handsome idols that I've ever seen in, like, my entire life. He has the prettiest smile and dimples, although he's very quiet and doesn't smile much. He has an introverted and calm aura that feels cold and warm at the same time - kinda similar to Bai Jingting who I really like. He also acts like he doesn't think of himself as super good-looking, or that he knows it but just doesn't care. I don't know how to describe this. I just know it when I see it (the opposite of 陈坤 lol). I know that he's already been in a couple of idol/romance dramas but their scriptwriting qualities are all sooooo bad that I couldn't bear watching a single episode. So now I'm still not sure about how good of an actor he is, or has the potential to become. But it would be very cool if he could be this handsome, this good at singing, and also become a great actor. It would be a blessing to China's (wild) entertainment industry LOL EDIT: btw he’s not a super “stylish” pop singer or performer. He’s also low-key a terrible dancer😂 He just sings a lot of ballads in a rather calm and sincere way. So I think it’s a good decision for his company (the same company as Fan Chengcheng and Huang Justin) to push him as an actor alongside his boygroup activities. I can’t imagine him doing that well as a solo singer in today’s music industry.

I just watched word of honor and the voice actor for gong jun definitely helped elevate his acting! I was thoroughly impressed how much the voice acting matches his face.
Not to break ur heart but his voice actor is homophobic 😭😭😭 there are old posts of him shitting on BL stories I am sad. Gong Jun and WKX doesn't deserve him but well, as long as he do a good job I just wish him suffer while working lmao.

For real though, Word of Honor exceeded my expectation and I am pretty much satisfied of the drama. It's kind of hard to find the same level drama as WOH but I'm looking forward to Immortality.

I really liked The Untamed but I have to say Word of Honor blew me completely away! I read both books first and LOVED both, then watched the dramas but WOH takes the cake. Though I always say, the books are always the best!! Side note, 2ha and TGCF is prob both of my absolute most favorite books. I really hope these two books are done justice in their drama form. I do think Chen Feiyu really matches the look of Mo Ran 👌.

Yup lots of my friends and even female family members did separate from kdrama. They said korean Thai stories are so redundant and cliches so they move on to cdramas. For me more about acting. I find many of Korean /Thai dramas have severely over exaggerated facial expressions and unnecessary screaming which annoys the heck out of me.

This emerging trend of adaptaing danmei after the massive success of Guardian and The Untamed is inevitable. I’m excited but also scared for the increasing scrutiny upon the danmei genre thats bound to happen. Im also hoping that these adaptations will be sincere, or at the very least respectful of its source materials.
It's notable that Quality will be clearly an issue since the genre is so new and fresh..

I'm going to be honest, not gonna lie Word Of Honor really exceeded my expectations. They set the bar too high even though they are low -budget (which I found ridiculous because it's so pretty oriented and clean). The way they adapt from novel isn't far and it is top-tier!!!
It's soooooo pretty, aesthetically it's gorgeous. The fight scenes and the scenery shots, when I heard it's low budget I couldn't believe it, they've done wonders.

Faraway Wonderers is now called Word of Honor. And so far Gong June’s acting is absolutely great. The chemistry between the characters is pretty amazing. I highly recommend it.

*Word of Honor* punched me in the face. I wasn't expecting it to be that good! I was just honestly curious because it had been sitting on my recs, ignored, but then I caved in. Watching it is the best and worst decision in my life because now I have to wait an entire month or two for the series to finish airing. Thank goodness I'm job hunting right now so the wait isn't so excruciating.

I dont expect anything from this drama. But, not for actors or direction, is about scrip and production. I read the book, i love it, and is very long, had a lot of characters, very hard situations. I really belive is very dificult to adapt to something close to book.

Word of Honor(A Tale of a Wanderer) is doing a really really great job. I am loving it a lot so far. Acting was good for me, the story never bored me, and the bl censorship is almost non-existent. I am satisfied.

Gong Jun proved himself to be PERFECT as WKX.... Couldn't have been better!
Word of honour is amazingly captivating. The chemistry and comeradie between the two main characters are very convincing. Brilliantly cast and brilliantly performed by both actors. They seem to get on so well on and off set. Love everything about this show. Touching philosophy. Zhang Zhehan played the tormented soul role to perfection. Love the way he expressed quiet love in a subtle way - with his eyes, smiles and silence. Simon Gong played the frivolous flirt turned demon role in a very cute and most convincing way - a joy to watch. The two of them together - it's a real WOW factor!
Very similar to the situation that The Untamed was in when production was still in the work. The criticisms and expectations were high for the actors and script. Tian Guan Ci Fu live adaptation is going to be face with similar challenges because the novel itself has set the expectations to be very high. I hope that they are able to give us a good casting for the characters. As a novel fan, it is really hard to see someone as Hua Cheng or Xie Lian because those two characters are exceptionally beautiful and well-developed in the novel. Whoever is cast will definitely have a lot of expectations to meet. Not asking for much but just want actors who understand the characters and is able to execute and bring them to life.
I don’t want to compare but I do have to credit the cast of The Untamed (especially Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo). The casting is successful in The Untamed because of how each actors & actress are able to portray the characters in their own ways and bring them to life to show us all.
Lastly, I really do hope that the script writer and the team stick with the original script. One of the reasons why The Untamed is very successful is because of how closely the adaptation script is with the novel. As a novel fan and viewer, I want to see something that is well-thought out and planned than something rushed and put together to gain fame.
Sorry for the long comment, but I am looking forward to these BL adaptations in 2021. ☺

I’m scared too honestly and very worried but at least they don’t have to worry TOO much about censorship in TGCF cause it didn’t show any explicit scene besides that cave scene and the monk commenting on Xie Lian’s “dark essence” lmao but yeah, I really hope the actors can really portray that kind of relationship that HuaLian has.
@@AlvinaYunoa I think it's more difficult to portray Xie Lian and Hua Cheng's relationship as platonic than Wangxian. Sure, for the most part its just the 2 of them living together and solving all the issues/mysteries around them, which can be represented as "bromance" but how on Earth are they gonna explain Hua Cheng's 800+ years of devotion, the 1000 Gods temple and his entire life and death revolved around Xie Lian.

When it comes to Immortality I'm mostly worried about the fact that it really is driven forward by the relationship plot. In The Untamed, for example, the chemistry between the two leads was definitely important, but their "love" was kind of a decided thing from the very start, so what you concentrate the most on is the Wei Wuxian's story itself and all the schemes around him. Although there is a BIG story in Immortality too, I feel that your main focus of interest is still Shizun & Mo Ran and what happens between them... If it gets changed too much or they can't pull off the chemistry, I don't even know what it's going to be like. Also, too much cg required which is always a worrying point for me.
True, I really hope they got enough creativity in there with those changes in the script that it’ll still be the same feelings but we’ll be missing A LOT of their relationship in those 10+ years

I wouldn't worry about the CGI because Tencent invested a HUGE amount of money for this drama with new technology stuff and so on so I'm not worried about that.

Word of Honor is so darn good. First costume and wuxia drama and I was mind blown with everything in the first ep alone. I didn't expect much and went into it not knowing anything (not read the book), but I was so overwhelmed with emotions and instantly felt for Shu's character and WKX who was introduced later on. I remember that scene where Shu walked out in the nighttime with snow drifting down, and with the ost playing in the back...the emotion was of pure loneliness and I can't believe it was only ep 1.
You really feel for the main characters and care for them very early on. Can't praise it enough, I only wish I knew Chinese literature so to appreciate the poems WKX recite from time to time...they're quite beautiful.
I'm suffering because word of honor is still airing and I literally watched all 12 episodes in a few days and now I hAVE TO WAIT. I CANNOT WAIT.

for every bl drama there are dozens and dozens of dramas with s female lead and a male lead coming out every year so i really don't get the rivalry people say bl dramas will face. if the audience enjoys watching this type relationship every bl drama has a chance of being successful. i have really high hopes for chasing the light, it's kinda sad we'll have to wait so long for its release

It's problematic because the central agency that grants airing license to dramas always likes to "balance the playfield" with a variety of genres. With so many BL adaptations coming in a short span of time, the agency might decide to space out the airing schedule or worse, put a temporary ban on the genre to make room for others. It's never a good idea in China to be the one hot thing that gathers a lot of government attention, because it means more scrutiny and potential censorship, especially for a very controversial topic of BL.
See that’s the problem there all in the romance category the problem with the BL adaptations are the Main couple won’t end up together so unless the storyline is actually good they can’t compete with the heterosexual romance movie since we can’t get the same satisfaction of a “happy ending” .
In large part it's fanatic stans of certain actors trying to sabotage shows that aren't done by their actors, so that their own idol's shows do better. If it was actually about enjoying the *genre* for more people then there wouldn't be as much drama.

@@gloriataro3509 BL is primarily targeted for an older audience aka R18, not for kids. If kids were watching it, its their fault for looking into it and allowing themselves to consume it the first place, not the production team.
TU, WOH, and Guardian had a lot censored, but the acting, the director, and the script was really well designed and not far from the novel. Censorship is not an excuse for crappy drama adaptation.
It's honestly sad that Priest hasn't had a proper good adaption yet, she deserves it. Personally I'm looking forward to Immortality/Hao Yi Xing since 2HA was a novel I really enjoyed reading. I like the casting so lets see how the show will look like.

@@harleynguyen5301 out of the adaptations that will come out, there are sha po lang, mo du, tian ya ke, shan he biao li. i personally recommend read qi ye first before tian ya ke but you can read tianyake alone. but tianyake is not fully translated yet so i recommend (again) to read qi ye first. and please read liu yao cause they are bunch of babies, but it still not fully translated. pssttt read sha po lang and mo du ftw

She found the live action's ending so bad that she wrote a whole 10k words extra "fix it" chapter to fix the ending in a rage (bc of fans too). I know a lot of people were very skeptical about Gong Jun being able to portray WKX right but I gotta say - he absolutely nailed it. He's cheeky and subtle, yet obvious in his longing and desperation and when that flip switches, he is SCARY as hell.
Word of Honor has been such a pleasant surprise. I've been following its development since last year, but didn't expect it to become a big hit. It's a really good drama that follows the source material as closely as possible and the two male leads have intense chemistry (I think I've raved about this part many times now) ❤ IMO, it set the bar high for the rest of the BL adaptations coming up.
For their mental health, I hope that the actors cast for Tian Guan Ci Fu can live in the same bubble that the boys in The Untamed lived on. They didn't know how big of a project it was until it was too late so they didn't have time to worry or stress about their performance.
My most anticipated relased is also Sha Po Lan... let's pray for a good drama! and good luck to all of them! I really hope we get to enjoy all 11 dramas soon :)

People go watch Word of Honor, you will not regret it. I haven't seen gaurdian but I've heard enough criticism of it that I have an idea of how it went. I started word of honor after someone recced it in fb & I binged first 6 episodes this afternoon. Not one moment felt boring. For the fans of Priest, this series will be a delight granted it doesn't get censored. ❤❤

Came back to this video after finishing WOH, which took 1st place in my heart from the untamed. I think it's gonna be really hard for other dramas to beat it for me, because wenzhou are legendary - the chemistry between Zhang Zhe Han and Gong Jun is something really special. It's funny because i was kinda reluctant to start watching it and it actually blew me away with how good it is. Also Gong Jun did an amazing job, I can't imagine anyone else doing this role, thank god the original cast couldn't make it.

I've watch The Untamed, Guardian and Word Of Honor. All those 3 dramas really amazing. Their storyline, the casts of the characters and even the quality of the dramas were great too. You can see the chemistry of all the lead characters are indeed brilliant. For me, no regrets. I will recommend those 3 dramas to those fans who love danmei.
For now, those are the next on my list for the year 2021; Heaven Official's Blessing, Winner Is King, and Immortality.

I love that I'm watching this in July 2021 after getting hooked into c-drama by Word of Honor. The 2 worrisome weaknesses you listed, Gong Jun's experience and the adaptation content ended up being strengths... I only wish they had given us some more insight into ZZH's character (the way we can see in the novel) but even if it was a low budget production, it ended up amazing. I'm really happy netflix picked it up and that there are resources for those of us who had not been exposed to this great fandom. Thank you for the videos!
I recommend Killer and Healer. It is so good but really underrated. The two male leads have such good chemistry and their soulmate/bromance bond is so strong.
I'm surprised to hear that so many people wanted Lu Han to be cast as Xie Lian! I guess on my corner of the internet we were all heavily rooting for Song Jiyang (played Xiao Xingchen in CQL/The Untamed) to play him. There are SO MANY edits where people painted XL's hair over pics of him. It really fits!!
I'm currently watching Words of Honor, The Faraway Wanderers adaptation. It's really good! I can't stop watching the moment I watched Episode 1. Really, go watch it! You won't be disappointed. Gong Jun did a great job in acting as Wen Kexing, same as Zhang Zhehan as Zhou Zishu.

What I really liked about Sha Po Lang is that all the other plots going on are not just wallpaper for the romance/couple drama, but it's a REALLY high-stakes military and political thriller. I grew up reading my dad's Tom Clancy and Isaac Asimov library. I hope the adaptation does justice to that as well, like you feel like it's a serious existential crisis for the world around them not just a question of whether the couple has a happy ending or not.
Just here, crying over all of the lost potential. I still can't believe that most of these will probably never see the light of day.

Every one can switch any series off, if it does not match the expectation. I am watching now WORD OF HONOUR, and l enjoy the two leads very much, but would never compare this story, this relationship between the two leads with the characters of THE UNTAMED. This is just my opinion.
Guardian had huge success before the Untamed. IP to drama adaptions are not uncommon there are many other examples. Often they can be successful because of already established fanbases behind the novel. It think it's quite unfair to cast off many other's hard work just because you are a fan of 1 specific drama. Broaden your view and you will find there are many other great novels and dramas out there.

Looking forward to Hao Yi Xing Immortality. Loved the original Erha with lovable and rich main and support characters. Dream castings. Costumes look beautiful. Artistic design looks amazing. Dubs by the actors themselves. I have confidence in Luo Yunxi ability to carry Chu Wanning and Chu Xun. Hope to see more of LYX sleeves actions, since CWN have those scenes in the book. A bit worried about the director and camera work. The details of costume and set design look pretty on point with the original story.
Word of honor is a great show. Really enjoyable so far at episode 7.

'Guardian' is extremely successful simply because of its 2 main actors BAI YU and ZHU YI LONG. Their acting, handsomeness and the chemistry between them saved the whole drama to fall into ruin. 🤨 Still ' Guardian' is my favorite because of the main actors/characters. 😊

Can't wait for Heaven Official Blessing!! I wish Song Jiyang get casted as Xie Lian. When I read the novel TGCF, my thought automatically wander about how elegant Song Jiyang is as 'Xiao Xingchen' in The Untamed and how he pretty much exude the same aura and vibe as Xie Lian. Not to mention he looks really good in white robe.

I'm not surprised about the surge in upcoming bl dramas since the Untamed was successful and much loved. But in the end, it'll all comes down to is how well it's executed in terms of character and plot, not just visuals.
edit - I just realised Heaven's Official Blessing is also by the same author as the Untamed. I thought the synopsis looked good and now that I know it's by the same author, I'm sure the plot would no doubt be intricate. They've set the bar so high.

OH MY GOD I squeeealed when I saw they were adapting 撒野!!! I listened to the 广播剧 (audio drama) for this twice, and each time I fell more in love with the characters, the themes, and the inspirational messages of this masterpiece. The voice actors and production crew for the audio drama did such a fantabulous job that I'm not sure if the live action can top that...but fingers crossed! Same with 杀破狼, the first audio drama I listened to that also had an amazing cast of voice actors (so many of priest's works are being adapted yay!)
Also, thank you AvenueX for your wonderful channel. I only recently discovered your other videos, and it's such a joy to find someone fluent in both Mandarin and English sharing her passion for Chinese BL drama...I feel I have found a community of like-minded fans, and it's a welcome respite from the chaos around me!
The most one I am most worried about is Immortality. The book is really heartbreaking and X rated... Not sure they are going to do a lot of the book...
If they release Tian Guan Ci Fu I will die of joy 😱 But I have medium expectations for any adaptations... I am also pretty excited for ShaPoLang. The characters are really well written. But if they make it a typical period drama (like what they have done with Douluo Continent) then it will be very disappointing

My top 3 in terms of anticipation based on my enjoyment of the novels:
1) Immortality (2ha, but I'm sad cause I know the censorship will be strong with this one)
2) Winner is King (Sha Po Lang, the english title is a BIG spoiler lol)
3) Chasing the Light (SAYE, I hope they manage to keep the same balance between the level of angst and fluff as in the novels)

I loved Word of Honor (A Tale of The Wanderer) and Gong Jun was excellent in his role. It's become my favourite BL drama, even surpassing The Untamed.
Ngl I feel like 2ha will be the hardest to pull off a good drama adaptation, even more than Tian guang ci fu. AND imagine making the viewers hate the male lead for 1/3 of the story (cuz ofc the *plot*) and make us fall in love with him again. That's going to be a hard feat to pull off with the censorships. I can't even imagine the direction that this drama will be heading toward. After all the censorships, I feel like more than half of what makes this story good will be cut off. If someone have any ideas on how they'll pull it off, you are more than welcome to enlighten me.
True. TGCF just need to alter the "borrowing spiritual energy" part and the rest 99% of the book is save to be filmed. For 2ha, it was like at least 50% of the book had to be taken out for how steamy it was. The drama team added some new plots to compensate the parts where they have to cut out. However, judging from the leaked BTS I think they still manage to keep the main plot line and the feel of the original story.
Hearing her say that 'tian ya ke's' episodes were too long for an adaptation of a short novel then remembering her final review on the actual drama saying that the episodes were too short and the ending was rushed made me smile 😆

I'm very excited for saye but a bromance can't cut it the actors are perfect for our boys I wish it could be made in Taiwan with those boys for Sha po Lang I want the person that made Ying yang master on it
2:35 Oh wow so Bi Wenjun will be in a BL drama too! I've actually known him for a couple of years now. He participated in the same idol competition show "Idol Producer" as Cai Xukun, but unfortunately didn't debut. The final group had 9 members but he was ranked the 10th.
Back then he left a big impression on me because:
1) He's top 3 best vocalist on that entire show. His singing is flawless even without a mic and background music.
2) He had no screentime because he just didn't talk - just super quiet all the time - to the point where I was like "where is he? is he eliminated already? why don't I remember it?"
3) He is honestly one of the most handsome idols that I've ever seen in, like, my entire life. He has the prettiest smile and dimples, although he's very quiet and doesn't smile much. He has an introverted and calm aura that feels cold and warm at the same time - kinda similar to Bai Jingting who I really like.
He also acts like he doesn't think of himself as super good-looking, or that he knows it but just doesn't care. I don't know how to describe this. I just know it when I see it (the opposite of 陈坤 lol).
I know that he's already been in a couple of idol/romance dramas but their scriptwriting qualities are all sooooo bad that I couldn't bear watching a single episode. So now I'm still not sure about how good of an actor he is, or has the potential to become.
But it would be very cool if he could be this handsome, this good at singing, and also become a great actor. It would be a blessing to China's (wild) entertainment industry LOL
EDIT: btw he’s not a super “stylish” pop singer or performer. He’s also low-key a terrible dancer😂 He just sings a lot of ballads in a rather calm and sincere way.
So I think it’s a good decision for his company (the same company as Fan Chengcheng and Huang Justin) to push him as an actor alongside his boygroup activities. I can’t imagine him doing that well as a solo singer in today’s music industry.
I'm a Bi Wenjun fan but I've kinda pushed him away for a while so I wanna start following him again. Excited for his drama, hope it's good this time round 🙏☺️

I just watched word of honor and the voice actor for gong jun definitely helped elevate his acting! I was thoroughly impressed how much the voice acting matches his face.
Not to break ur heart but his voice actor is homophobic 😭😭😭 there are old posts of him shitting on BL stories I am sad. Gong Jun and WKX doesn't deserve him but well, as long as he do a good job I just wish him suffer while working lmao.

I really liked The Untamed but I have to say Word of Honor blew me completely away! I read both books first and LOVED both, then watched the dramas but WOH takes the cake. Though I always say, the books are always the best!! Side note, 2ha and TGCF is prob both of my absolute most favorite books. I really hope these two books are done justice in their drama form. I do think Chen Feiyu really matches the look of Mo Ran 👌.
I feel like I needed to take notes to keep all these projects straight. lol
