Does anyone realize that the stair is birds eye view and X is going vertically??Does this mean X is paper now??

I feel like if they were gonna try to pull an effect like this on SNES, Mode7 would be involved somehow.

Possibly, because Mode 7 allows showing a 256-color image, so that would work really well a few pre-rendered frames of the staircase.
It would be something similar to Mickey Mania's tower effects. Considering the game runs using the CX4 chip, it wouldn't be hard to imagine
