I remember there used to be a large ships bell hanging from a rope slung over the ruin, of a window, in one of the houses built around 1910 by the conjested district board.
Yes, my father and a few others put it there. Now it's outside Peig Sayers' old house, nearby. I am not certain where the bell comes from - it could be that it was a central 'prop' made for the David Lean film 'Ryan's Daughter' and there is already at least one other prop on the island, the wooden bar inside the cafe building, which is faring really very well ! Thank you for your comment. I am releasing a few new short films and interviews on the island soon so feel free to subscribe to get notified.
Well done Simon, you did it before it became as popular as it is today. Now there is a lottery that generally attracts 50,000 applications to run the island B&B on The Great Blasket island. Considering there is no hot water etc. Mhaith tú Simon, go hiontach.
Thank you Karl. I am writing a book about my family's life there at the moment, lots of interesting stories! I am finding out more and more from my mother. Have you seen my 3 minute film 'Great Blasket Island - An Blascaod Mór' ? it hopefully shows some small aspects of the island's absolutely incredible beauty and wildness. Have you ever been?
@@elauadeinsf yes, I watched the first and second part earlier, now just watched your short film, beautiful. Well done. I haven't actually been on an Blasket Mór, but am a relatively frequent visitor to West Cork and West Kerry including the Dingle peninsula. I studied Peig Sayers for my leaving cert many years ago, I've recently bought An Toileanach by Tomás O'Crohan. I am subscribed to your channel now so will keep an eye out for your book. I never knew about your family and your time there, fascinating. Great story Simon, and a beautiful representation of a special place.
@@Karl_with_a_K Thank you Karl, I somehow missed your reply but maybe I'll see you there in the Spring when the ferries run again (May is lovely with the sea pink in a mass of flowers making part of the land alight with colour), for a great holiday. You'll find me in a tent somewhere!
