Russia’s war on Ukraine: Will Putin get what he wants? | To the point

  • Nearly 22 months after Russia invaded, Ukraine’s much heralded counter offensive has failed to deliver the breakthrough Kyiv expected. Claiming that Russian forces are improving their positions, Vladimir Putin is dispatching more soldiers, weapons and munitions to the battlefield. Ukrainian forces - and citizens - are bracing for another tough winter. With US support hanging in the balance, President Zelensky warns Ukraine could lose without US help.
Meanwhile Russia has launched a diplomatic offensive in the global South and a hybrid attack on the West.
Our question today: Russia’s war on Ukraine: Will Putin get what he wants?
Wilfried Jilge, is an associate fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations DGAP. An expert on Eastern Europe, he is a mediation adviser on Ukraine at the Center for International Peace Operations (ZIF).
Moritz Gathmann reports from eastern Europe and currently Ukraine for the German news magazine Stern.
Irina Borogan, joins us from London. A Russian investigative journalist, she is co-founder and deputy editor of Agentura.ru, a watchdog of the Russian secret services' activities.
    Chapters:
    00:00 Introduction
02:14 Has the war become a war of attrition?
03:30 None of the warring parties has had any major successes recently.
04:07 Putin's authoritarian regime gives little indication of the mood of the population.
05:15 Russia has many resources to oppose the sanctions.
06:30 Is a long war equally problematic for both warring parties?
07:40 Can Ukraine continue to count on US support?
08:20 Can Europe fill the gap and increase aid to Ukraine?
10:45 How can Ukraine recruit more soldiers?
11:15 The West had overly high expectations of Ukraine?
12:07 The Russians are currently strong despite heavy losses.
12:55 The West should set more realistic goals and strategy.
14:30 Russian outnumbers Ukraine in terms of weapons and soldiers.
15:50 Can Russia sustain a long war?
17:45 Russian drones turn the Ukrainian trenches into a kill zone.
19:00 Putin is looking for support in Africa and the Middle East
20:00 Putin is more isolated than it might appear.
    21:50 Have Western sanctions failed?
23:19 The Middle East conflict is diverting Western attention.

If the attrition ratio is anywhere near what it looks like from photo evidence, Russia will run out of weapons and people long before Ukraine. They are using 30 artillery pieces a day. Much of it has photo evidence online. They already lost much of what they were estimated to have before the war. And the rates of loss keep accelerating as they go to older equipment. It has been a very strong Ukrainian policy to NOT recruit men in their late teens or twenties, in order to preserve the population of adults that will make new families (and children). Therefore, men in their 30s and 40s are being pushed into conscription ahead of youth. This is the opposite of the west, where most recruits would be 18-22 years old. If Ukraine reached a point of crisis, they could lower the recruitment age to 18 and tap their last available pool of fighting men, but I'm pretty sure they would go to the bargaining table before that happened.

NATO estimates 150,000 Russian soldiers killed and many more wounded. A week or two ago they estimated 6,000 Russians killed in "Meat Wave" attacks in Adviika alone. Russia has a population of about 140 million. Life expectancy of males about 58, you have to dig for this data. Russian losses in Afghanistan were about 35,000, and domestic discontent made the war unsustainable. Compared to US population, imagine a war in which 450,000 were killed in 2 years and you get an idea of the scale. Not to mention the 1-2 million Russians who fled to avoid conscription. You actually can't win a war without ground troops. That's why mines are effective in defence. Airforce can't cover and take out every enemy in open ground. Its not about high tech fighter jets, as fighter planes stands now they are not capable of waging war themselves. And Russians are not like Iraqi armies who didn't have anti air capabilities in any meaningfull way. So desert storm like operations will only lead to lot of jets being shot down. The only thing jets will do is stay well away from any Russians lines and shoot missiles from behind the active lines. And it's not that effective in breaking down entrenched lines, more artillery will be 1000x times better.

This was an interesting discussion. It was fairly balanced (more balanced that you would typically find in the Western media). The only disappointment is that the discussion of peace talks or a negotiated end to the war did not arise even once. This is the biggest problem with the West. They haven't backed Ukraine enough to match Russian capabilities. And they aren't talking peace. Basically, they want Ukraine to prevail against a more powerful Russia. This means that more Ukrainians will have to die in order to fulfill the West's ambitions of defeating Russia.

May it be possible that the leaders of this war work on a treaty that ensures a stop in the hostilities? We need to prepare the ground of a new Ukraine-Russia border or "Transition Zone", and thus build the foundation for peaceful cohabitation that allows for settlements to be rebuild, farms to run again with strong governance, and infrastructure to be commissioned.

Ukraine could lose without US help ? The last 22 months says that Ukraine was losing with plenty of US and EU help. You call Bahkmott, Adviika, and enormous casualties, being out gunned, out bombed winning ? Give me a break !!

You never over-estimated Ukraine. [Illustration:] A country is promised one million rounds and so they plan for that, then they do not get those rounds and soldiers are unable to hold the ground without ammunition. Now you say you over-estimated their abilities? I say to the contrary that Ukraine did so much more than any other army could do without the equipment and ammunition they were promised. The US Army would never have mounted any counter-offensive without air superiority, yet you criticize them for not advancing at a speed that YOU want them to. Go ahead in your office, tie the hands and feet of one of your co-workers and then demand them to make the coffee.

If I tell you go and buy 1million dollar house ,I will give you the money
Will you go blindly and belive me
Probably if you are 2 years old
But if you are running a country, you don't plan by promises, you plan by what you have at the moment

Unfortunately, Ukraine Army is not the US Army. It could have become close to that 2014-2022 but wanted to appease the Russians...that worked out well.

This is another European war and the US has no business to get involved. The Parasitical expectations that the US must come and help are annoying. And not, this war would not come on our shore.✌
