  • Enjoy another beautiful day from Tehachapi after a few days of heavy rainfall. Today we almost caught another GE locomotive catch fire. This one was only hot enough to melt the paint and create a think white smoke.

    Great video. VWD. I'm not really a rail fan guy but I like that area and was just there last month. I used to hop on freight trains to see where they were going when I was a kid in the Bay Area .Made it all the way to Eugene Oregon when I was 16 yo. But these trains out of Bakersfield stop in Mojave and go either East toward Las Vegas or South toward Los Angeles. (Correct me please if I am wrong).Those tunnels can really smoke you out, especially the long ones in Northern Calif. Going uphill through a long tunnel in an open box car can be pretty nasty, especially before there were smog regulations (Hey, I'm ancient). "Liked" and subscribed.

    Idk why this vid is getting so much press for click bait? I know it did not almost catch on fire but you guys saw the thumbnail it clearly shows the thing the title was talking about.

    Amazing, just everything I like about the loop and videos, just mixed freight trains and the set of tunnels near the highway that I remember seeing in the 1950s that my mom stopped by for me to watch a SP set of F units run through them.

    Thanks for sharing! Great video shots of an area I am VERY familiar with after living in San Jose for almost 60 years and traveling in this area on my many road trips. Glad the Kramer Junction bypass was finished several years ago making driving on Hwy. 58 west of Barstow MUCH safer now. I was waiting to see the flames come out of that engine and then the train stopping in an emergency. I wonder what caused this fire. Anyhow, glad the weather was good enough for filming but watch out for those Mojave Green rattlesnakes while you are out there. 😎

    I'm new to railfanning, I was wondering how different companies(UP, BNSF, etc) can be in the same lash-up? Do all the railroad companies use each other's engines?

    • @natgass8102
      @natgass8102 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      they do and when UP is using BNSF or another rails engines they pay for that, basically as trains are moved across the country they are often handed off to someone else in the middle of the country where there own tracks stop, so the rails pay each other for using the power as it speeds up the transit times

      Tehachapi is in a mountain pass Northwest of Los Angeles, on the way to California's central valley through Bakersfield, Sacramento, and the SF Bay area. The trains have to either climb steeply or drop steeply. This drop is the problem here. Trains are enormously heavy and when they drop altitude, they will speed up out of control without braking. The engines have electric motors that convert a braking action into electricity. That electricity is diffused through radiators on the top of the engine. It's similar to an electric cook-top or kettle, the radiators get red-hot and need cooling fans. That was the cause of the smoke, the paint peeling, and "almost catching fire". Felicitations et bonne chance, Amelie.
