Manyard often writes his lyrics in a sarcastic tone, this one is based around the fact that we love to sit in front of the TV consuming tragedy after tragedy living “vicariously” through these experiences, then just walking away like glad that’s not me

I was looking for this comment before I posted myself 😂.
Also, the line "Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies. Much better you than I" goes pretty deep. I think Maynard is saying that we live comfortably through entertainment so we don't have to live in discomfort. Afraid to take risks for fear of failure, or worse... Death! Therefore providing meaning to the "much better you than I"
      I could be wrong lol.

    • @marcusrobertson5627
      @marcusrobertson5627 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Yeah, news of tragedy/violence/bloodshed is what sells, but not because ppl want to do anything about it. It sells because we can feel bad for a second, then change the channel and quit thinking about it. It's entertainment.

he's also speaking to our willingness to endorse the violent enforcement of social norms, and atrocities we endorse around the world by upholding this current empire. It's easier to glorify war and violence when you're far from the front lines.

This is a philosophical interpretation on modern news media and the psychological impact of sensationalism in modern society. We are getting a dopamine boost from the feeling of safety while watching others suffer. The news and media capitalizes on this. It is why disaster and horror are such popular genres. The band isn't supporting suffering in the song, but rather pointing out the brutality of modern culture.

Insofar as I understand, this song is a critique of modern news media and how they sensationalize, profitize and get people addicted to the idea of violence. They prey upon the innate human evolution so that people can vicariously experience horror from the safety of their own spaces.
And now we go to commercials once you are significantly primed to buy.

@@mr5900ar I added the bit about predatory advertisement lol. And to be fair, not all of it is "evil" yet it is definitely targetted.
If you watch a horror movie and then see an add for a home security system...that is by design. There is good and bad in regards to the marketing mechanisms. (If you watch a movie where someone has AIDS and then some adverts are shown for condoms and antiviral hiv meds...I dont see a problem with that. At all.)
The problem is what it psychologically does to people if they are constantly in a state of designed, exaggerated or dysfunctional fear.

Tool’s Aenama and Lateralus discs were always in the CD player in the car, and my boys jammed with me while we went around town. My oldest was a trumpet player and percussionist, younger is a bass violin and electric bass guitar player, and their little sisters are both musical as well. My wife plays trumpet as well, and I play guitar, mandolin, and piano/keyboard.
Sadly, Liam left us early, September 2022, but left a wonderful toddler who sits on her gramp’s lap and enjoys my “crazy music” too!

I never hear someone say, "Oh, this sounds like Tool". I hear, "People who like Tool would like this too...". Tool has their own sound that nobody else even tries to directly replicate. The song is a criticism of the media presenting these sorts of topics and images to the world and how it's human nature to slow down to watch the train wreck out the window. There is some of that appeal in every one of our reptilian brains out there even if we are better people to resist it. I really hope you continue the Tool journey, I have been a fan since 94, and really enjoy people reacting to their music for the first time. Also, please either have the lyrics up or look at them after as you did here. None of their songs sleep on lyrics, and you will be missing out if you don't see them. The lead singer has a pen that won't quit and also sings for 2 other bands with similar lyrical quality, but you will figure that out eventually. :) Which, I hope to also see you get to in time.

This used to be the second radio single from this album and it was the only time you would ever hear Tool on the radio besides Sober and The Pot because it’s a buffet of what Tool does - excellent drums, excellent lyrics, vocals, high gravity guitar and groovy bass. The meaning behind the song is the concerns that us as American have an obsession with the television and "living vicariously" through television characters. It also touches upon the American obsession with violence in television. A very psychological view on how we as a culture tend to need to watch violence to feel better about our own lives, and how when a war occurs(the Iraq war) we tend to need to watch "while the whole world dies"

I'd love to recommend a band for you, while maybe not as hard as Tool but still pretty deep, called Type O Negative. A few songs that are a good introduction would be Nettie, Christian Woman, Black No.1, White Slavery and so on. But the song I think would be best as an introduction would be Love You to Death. It offers a lot of what Peter Steele can do in one song.

    This is just for warmup.
Edit: oh and just a word of advice. If you are ever unsure which video for a certain song to choose, just go with the one that has the most views. 8/10 it's the best one.

This song is calling out our addiction to violence in the media. From the True Crime obsession to the 24/7 sensationalists news this song is about how our obsession with violence on TV, basically like we're watching a bloody gladiator fight where people violently kill each other to thunderous applause, only doing so from our TVs, "from a good, safe distance".

The song Third eye, man. Third eye. Good fuckin' song.
edit: I respect your intro message, all the good energy to you my man! Appreciated.
edit 2: 07:45 fuck yeah, besides music genius, the lyrics are top notch. Fuuck yeah. Poetry. "Blood like rain come down, drum on grave and ground!"
Hahahah, you are a hype beast, I instantly absorb your energy and go crazy, hahahaaaa great job bro!
also: 15:04 "who are you to point your finger, so full of it" ~ The pot ;)
    Good job.

Since TOOL and Rush hit you well, I'd also recommend trying out a band named RISHLOO. Yes, silly name, but they kind of swim in the same waters as TOOL and Rush, like a bit of a hybrid, but also their own thing.
The track "Feathergun in the Garden of the Sun" is one that I think you might like. It's got a beat you can catch/nod to and a catchy hook.

With Tool, YOU really should listen to the entire album, but you can listen to any song, and undoubtedly, you will like 99%. The same could be said for MJK's other bands: Welcome to the Tool Army, but you don't join it. It joins you
