I just thought about Amanda Jones and had to look her up. I was 3 years old when she won Miss USA. I always knew her name because the day of the pageant, my mother and I adopted a female kitten from a place in Strongsville, Ohio. My mother said we would name her after whomever won the pageant that night. So my cat was named Amanda Jones. I had Amanda Jones for about 13 years till she passed away. This is the first time I actually got to see the real Amanda Jones. Thanks internet!
@kurtdublin Amanda was so different, down to earth and very intelligent. In addition to being beautiful. Miss Israel was another one of the favorites until her disastrous final question round. Notice when Philippines is announced as the winner, for a moment the audience seems silently stunned.
She was an aspiring model, but after her reign was over she latterly fell off the face of the earth in what must have been total privacy and not any more modeling.
Actually, she was a real anti-beauty queen and didn’t even like these pageants or beauty contests. She was very intelligent, ironic and critical about the whole beauty universe and considered herself rather ugly and awkward. When she made her farewell walk the next year, she rubbed her nose - like in the movie The Sting - indicating that it was all a con. Afterwards, she jumped off the stage and walked out. An very interesting article is written about her under the pseudonym Emma Knight.
While I can see the love for Amanda Jones because of her politics, I must admit take away the "coolness, and anti-pageant patty" stuff, and what is get is an attactive ordinary girl. She is no where in terms of physical beauty like Debbie Shelton(1970) or Judi Anderson)(1978)
@kurtdublin Another robbery, in my opinion, was in 1983 when Julie Hayek lost to Lorraine Downs of New Zealand. I liked Lorraine very much, but Julie should've won that year.
@kurtdublin If you have the patience, Google Miss Universe 1970. You'll eventually see pics of Marisol Malaret, the winner, the day after she won. She has removed the long, attached "fall' wig to reveal her short "pixie" style haircut. And yes, Miss Curacao was jacked big time in 1968, she was clearly the deserving winner. I think the judges loved her, but the idea of a black MU in '68 was just a bit too shocking. I think the one that got to me the most was in 78, when they announced South Africa (plain Jane in a horrible evening gown, over Judi Andersen), even my 50 year old Mom was like "What the hell???!!??" I met Judi in autumn of 78, got her autograph, she was a sweet lady.
@kurtdublin I started to bother you?!!! check again....and yes that's what you are good at.....Trashing people ... Miss Amanda for sure is living a happy life now... so as Margarita... The judges were not majority ASIANS as you claimed it to be... Miss Philippines won fair and sQuare period!!!!! you can not change it......We won!!!!!!! Deal with it..... sore loser!!!!!! EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT!!!!!!!THERE X20!!!!

Wonderful story Jason, thanks!!!!! I remember this pagent well, because I thought Amanda was all class. I'm sure your Amanda kitty was as well. :-)
beautiful woman from Illinois, she has a great personality.
She is much better than Miss USA 72 and 74 for sure. I think her placement in Miss Universe was well-deserved too. Im a fan
I was a little girl rooting for her the entire show. I was so excited when she won.
Poor Miss Maryland...'future seems so important to this country...' What a profound observation. Miss Illinois won this in a cakewalk.
@kurtdublin Yes. Miss USA was head and shoulders above the rest of the girls that year at Miss Universe.

@kurtdublin Yes, Debbie Shelton losing to Miss Puerto Rico (who was wearing a wig!) was a shocker. In 1970. A definite WTF??? Miss Universe moment.
