I remember Grandma Gatewood, the grandmother of a classmate, coming to speak to us when we were in grade school. We didn't quite grasp the significance of what she had done, but we all felt her indomitable spirit! She was One Very Cool Woman!

Grandma Gatewood was and is an awe inspiring woman. It would have been an honor to have met a woman like her. She is an American hero and legend.

What a remarkable woman such an inspiration she deserves to have a movie about her.... When I did the trail going southbound I actually came across a farmer who was just a little boy in New Hampshire when she came knocking on his door asking what's for dinner and inviting herself to dinner his farm is just down the road from highway 25A in New Hampshire what an honor to have slept in the same farm that she did

Her family should be so proud of her.

They are. There is an annual gathering of her family in the fall down near Old Man's Cave, in southern Ohio to hike the trail named in her honor.

She was a mother of 11. She protected her children and stayed married to Perry Gatewood until all but two of her children had grown up and left home. At that point she moved out and finally filed for divorce. In the 1940's there were very few laws that protected women in abusive relationships. She was a very brave woman.

Why do they laugh at 'little cane'?
