Workshop in a Backpack

  • What's in my bag? An entire workshop. I built this electronics toolkit go-bag to bring Voidstar Lab into the field, and now you get a tool bag tour.
See which electronics tools I trust in emergencies, discover some surprising field kit ideas, and learn how a prototyping pro preps his toolbox.
Highlights include my battery-powered mobile soldering station, an indestructible backpack with secret powers, un-smashing a tablet, and munching tasty field rations.
This video has the absolute best post-roll Easter egg of any episode so far, and I cannot recommend enough that you watch it before you go. It was barely possible to film without dying of laughter.
CAUTION! This video takes place in an alternate reality in which the 'rona never spread. In your universe, some behavior mentioned is very risky. Protect yourself, your family, and your country by staying indoors as much as possible, wearing a protective mask, and maintaining social distance.

This channel is like “This Old Tony” in the bud, electronics version.
I took a degree in electronics over a decade ago but can’t even solder two wires with proper reliable conductivity, let alone deal with PCBs.
Now I see 3D Printing (CAD, mechanical engineering), electronics, software are all coming into one place to create stuff. Amazing. Makes me want to get started with Arduino.

My grandfather has a soldering gun from 1965 that has been broken many times that he repaired. He only kept it around because Sprint bought it for him when he worked for them. (He and I also prefer lead based solders vs more modern ones. And yes we keep around small fans to ensure decent ventilation.)

I had a pair of behind the head headphones when they went out of style for a while and became impossible to replace. They were Logitech, but they were made of some ungodly brittle plastic and were made up of tons of tiny pieces screwed together. There were about 24 screws in a simple pair of headphones. I had to replace the battery twice, all of the wiring, the USB port had to be soldered back on, and way before 3d printers, I took several small pieces and made moulds of their shattered remains and made gorilla glue copies that I had to sand down. I finally retired them when something on the board burned out and I didn't feel like running it down, but I have them somewhere still. They are probably only about 25% original material now, they are mostly made of gorilla glue, kapton and courage now. Now that I own a few printers, you've made me want to drag those out and rebuild them. There just never were better, not comfortable headphones to wear with glasses.

Yea, I do- So about 5 years ago my dad bought some big kind of like Beats over ear headphones. 3 years ago the driver wires broke and I fixed them. 2 years ago the charging port broke and I re soldered the thing- 2 days ago it broke again and I made it charge with an internal power bank I slapped in there... Love the comment about tools.
"Tools exist to solve problems. As long as a tool works fine and solves the problem, I don't even think about replacing it."
And "I like my crusty ass gear. I trust it."
So much knowledge in those statements. And applies to all types of tools. Electronic, woodworking, edc, etc.
A great reminder too when feel that desire to get the new shiny. There are some things I'm still going to get new things of trying to find what works best for me, but once I find it, there's no need to look for another. (At least until it get too worn or breaks. Lol)

Fantastic tool bag, love that the screwdrivers fit into nerf blasters. I’d recommend throwing in some rare earth magnets. Very helpful when trying to retrieve something magnetic (like fallen screws) from hard to reach locations ~ tape a magnet onto a broom handle to reach under/behind unmovable objects

    • @ZackFreedman

I stick them to my screwdriver shafts to make temporarily magnetic tips so I don't lose tiny screws as often. I find that permanently magnetic ones collect metal shavings and aren't always what I want anyway.

@@ZackFreedman bit of a necro, but there are screwdriver bits that are just neodyneum magnets, ifixit's larger kits include one for example; additionally there are purpose built ones that are about pen-sized and work like those telescoping pointers but with a magnet on the end

I love the bag, also, my gadget that I refuse to let die is my MP3 player. Cowon X9, I lost the cable for it, so to charge it I soldered some loops onto the battery solder pads and every time it goes flat (Once a week, killer battery life) I open the case and connect a USB lithium battery charger to it. Only issue is the music that's on the inbuilt part of the memory is forever the same now, until I get sick of it and replace the proprietary connector with USB C or something.
When the battery dies I'll be retrofitting whatever I have on hand, which will probably end up being an 18650 with 3 times the battery capacity, and if the screen goes I'll figure that out when it happens. Love that MP3, it's always in my car and it's been with me to 5 countries.

Hey another crescent flush cut shill! 😂
    I love my crescent set.
Also, that The so-called Sheep's foot blade, also known as a Mariner's blade, is one of my favorite designs. It was originally designed for common crew on sailing ships. The crew need knives for their work and also for safety in case someone gets entangled in the riggings which happens sometimes. BUT, the ship's officers harbored a constant fear of a mutany so they didn't want the common crew to have weapons. The Mariner's or Sheep's foot is a good blade style for utility and for enganglement emergencies, but not so good as a weapon. And so that's where this profile came from.

I was going to say for my Etsy I have some stuff I designed around Altoid Tins, Im a bit fancy now because I ordered black Altoid tins from suppliers over Alibaba and then I laser engrave off the paint to etch a design into the lids (if you do this careful about over-engraving, heating the tin and then ruining how it closes.
But on the Moleskin thing.... I prefer a Moleskin, because Im left handed and I don't like writing with my hand resting/running up and down a length of wire which starts to hurt after a while.

The bottom chassis has a Crack in it from that time it fell down some stairs, that was patched up with JB weld. There have been some little plastic chips taken out of the corners as well, which were replaced by filling the holes with hot glue. It's not as powerful as my main machine, but it does everything I need it to for quick coding and blender-ing on the road.

Awesome Video! What are your thoughts on ts80p or a ts100, I do not have a ton of usb c stuff but also not a ton of xt60 connectors. Thanks :)

    • @ZackFreedman
      @ZackFreedman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The TS80P is a minor upgrade over the TS80. I wouldn’t upgrade from a TS80 to the P, but given the choice of which to buy, I’d pick the latter.
I think the TS80P is a smarter buy than the TS100, since you have more cables and power supplies to choose from. It’s also easier to install aftermarket and upgraded firmware.

      @justinlevy4497 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ZackFreedman Alright, thank you. I was leaning toward the Ts80p due to it being newer anyway. How are the tips on it since it has the proprietary headphone jack connector.

@@justinlevy4497 They're decent for field work. The chisel tip is a bit larger than I like, and both tip cool down fast, but they both do the job. I wouldn't recommend it as your workhorse, but it's really impressive for a go-anywhere iron.

I have a similar TS100 and LOVE it, but it would be cool to find a cable that I won't melt haha.

I've saved my self $40 by repairing a stick blender. First some one melted the cable back in uni. Then a gear wore out so I printed a new one. Then it got dropped and the bit that links with attachments snapped so I printed a new one of those.... Twice because the first time the PLA decided it wasn't tough enough.
I should have just brought a new stick blender. It would have probably been easier.

i used to have a gadget i refused to let die.. until it finally got so broken i could not fix it anymore.. the plastic was failing, and giving way more places than i could fix, and printing a new shell was not possible due to my 3d printer not working(still not working, but i am looking into it) and finally, a chip blew on the pcb, and i cannot solder something that small without damaging it. so i finally bought a new pair of bone conduction headphones, and have had to leave the old one behind.. it's still around, in a box somewhere, along with a few other headphones i have busted by simply using them. waiting for a day i might get them working again.

Next form factor for the Google glass MUST be a monocle. That would be epic... and stylish. Though you might need a better solution then gluing to your face, bit of a downside that.

i have an old microdriver set i nabbed from my moms ex back in 2012 that is missing bits, the remaining ones are rusty, and the screwdriver broke under the rubber grip so it flexes and its held together by nothing but the factory grip glue

Another earned comment; this video is great, Zack! They are getting better and I really hope you continue. I have been hacking for a long time, but am digging learning about your hardware side of things... its great to see something new. I have a video suggestion for you. You look young, but do you know about the Bulletin Board Systems of yesteryear??? Grab SYNCTERM or NETRUNNER and telnet to 20ForBeers.com port 1337 ... you'll need an ANSI compatible terminal like SyncTerm or Netrunner (Or Qmodem or... yer a hacker - GET SOME!) - anyway, write Paulie420 a message... that's me. I wanna tell you all about the current BBS scene.

The Analytics™ show that most viewers leave during the oscilloscope outros, so I decided to cut them. Don't worry, I'm working on funnier, better ways to work the goofs, outtakes, and gags into the mix.
