  • Gurney Bay is Penang's newest and most eagerly awaited coastal playground. Costing RM58 million (that's how much the state government has paid out so far, for the completed work, out of the projected RM247 million)*, the first phase of the development was officiated by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Dato' Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak on Sunday, 4 February 2024.
In this video, I do a discovery walk immediately after the opening ceremony, to give you a first hand look at Gurney Bay ahead of your own visit there.

As Penang Island is named after the beetle nut, they should plant more pinang tree to give it's name some significance.

Thank you Timothy, I am coming back Penang during the CNY. Your video is a good reference for me. May I ask how is the parking situation for Gurney Bay? Do you think it will have ample parking lots?

    • @discoverwithtimothy
      @discoverwithtimothy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

If you wish to come here and enjoy ample parking, come in the early morning and enjoy the sunrise.
Don't come in the afternoon or evening, as it would be congested and almost impossible to gey parking space. Early morning parking places are plentiful.

Best not to compare TRX, KLCC and the rest. Best that every green space have it's own value to create uniqueness. Give those greens time to mature. Make sure we don't throw rubbish around. Play our part.

I believe the majority of the RM200+ million expenditure was allocated to land reclamation. This process incurs substantial costs due to the intricate engineering and environmental factors entailed, including the construction of sea walls, dredging activities, and ensuring stability against erosion and the threat of rising sea levels.

Who is Gurney ? After spending millions of rakyat money , why is the bay named after him ? What is Gurney's significant contribution to Malaysia or rakyat ? that Pulau Pinang opted to commemorate his name .

Gurney Bay adopted the name of Gurney Drive. Gurney Drive was given its name in 1952, in memory of Henry Gurney, who was assassinated by the communist a year earlier. More details on my website. Read up on Gurney Drive:

Tbh,dissapointed with the development of the park.Spend quarter billions of ringgit yet they got unimpressive park.
Even the concrete walls and pavement look so old and dirty like its already there years ago.
Compare to the park in Singapore and Vhina where the walls look like white color...looks very new.
Certainly can't compare at all with TRX roof top park and klcc too
Thats is certainly world class park.Even the park in Putrajaya and cyberjaya is far more better than this.
Penang government seems no diff then the rest of malaysian states despite claiming to be clean...Certainly some hangky pangky going on here...

So barren. Should learn landscaping from TRX- even though its new- it is very lush and cooling. Even though its brand new- you can already seen some of the elements already looking tired and not going to age well. Can't believe it costed nearly 300 million.... But hey, Penang state government can do no wrong as usual....

I did think about that, but on the other hand, I also thought, if they didn't want people to step on the grass, they would not have put the sundeck in the middle of the grass. If it's there, it means you are free to walk there. I believe, in future, the expectation is people can also picnic on the grass. They should however put up lots of garbage bins, for I don't trust locals not to litter.

News briefing delivered using three different and totally distinct languages. I wish Malaysians would stick to one language when speaking especially official announcements. I think at some point a decree is needed telling Government officials to use only one language preferably English so that non-Malaysian folks like me have a chance of understanding the entirety of official speeches and announcements.

Looks boring. Cement pavement are just too plain and hot with hardly any shades provided eg pergolas with creepers to provide relief from the sun. Could do with better designed pavements with tiles to create patterns to add character and aesthetics, more benches, perhaps incorporate elements of wood like boardwalks to break the monotony and absorb heat etc. Should add low shrubs along sidewalks, planter boxes etc to enhance landscaping. The toilet signs looks like its been printed at the office printer. Huge disappointment for the amount of money spent.

Eventually lose their values once they build on the other side. Sad
