      Lance was supposedly Waldo Von Erich's son. But he was already an accomplished high school and college athlete in the Dallas area before becoming a wrestler, which is how the fans knew he wasn't actually a Von Erich.

      In fairness to Fritz (or whoever made that decision), the fake relative thing was a fairly common thing for a while in pro wrestling. Fritz and Waldo Von Erich weren't related. None of the Anderson family are related, either. Hell, even Taker and Kane fall into that category. I can see why Fritz (or whoever) would think it might work as it'd worked before.

    10. The AWA was a workrate company, in a work rate territory, and Hulk Hogan couldn't work (his time in Japan showed folks that he wasn't entirely inept, but even then you're talking about 15-minute go's). Gagne going with Hogan would've meant going away from his vision of wrestling.

  • @Fixxer315

    Here are some additional candidates:
    WCW fires Ric Flair: One thing you didn't mention in your critique of Jim Herd is how they fired Ric Flair just 10 days before the GAB PPV where he was supposed to pass the torch to Lex Luger. That decision contributed to what was arguably the worst mainstream PPV of all time. It also gave McMahon the opportunity to hire and push Flair, as well as the Gold Belt that Flair took with him in a dispute over money.
    Eric Bischoff suspends Ric Flair in 1998: Proving Bischoff didn't learn from Herd's experience, he got into a p!ssing contest with Flair over Flair taking time off, and thus suspended Flair, which angered the WCW fanbase. Granted, Flair came back to great fan support, which they pretty much ruined.
    The WCW burial of Jericho: WCW had something pretty special emerging in the summer of 1998 with Jericho getting some of the biggest reactions on the show. Arguably the only talent getting a consistently better reaction was Goldberg. Thus it made sense to pair them together, which they seemed to be doing, as Jericho frequently taunted Goldberg on TV and even PPV. But the feud was then stopped with the only blowoff being a Goldberg spear to Jericho in the aisle. That decision made the glass ceiling of WCW visible to everyone, and pretty much guaranteed Jericho would leave once his contract was up. In fact along with Big Show, Jericho was among the first major WCW to WWF defection of the Monday Night Wars, paving the way for the Radicalz to do the same in early 2000.
    ECW Champion Justin Credible: When Mike Awesome defected while still being ECW champion, the short--term response of Taz coming back to win the title was brilliant. However, less that two weeks later, Credible wound end up with the title, and Francine, having challenged Tommy Dreamer immediately upon Dreamer winning the title. THe moment was shocking, but did nothing for the company in the long run, as by the time Credible dropped the title, ECW was about to lose its national program on TNN, and they would be months away from the company folding entirely. Could someone more popular with the fans like Raven, Sandman or RVD have saved the company? Unlikely, but Credible as champ for four months certainly ensured they would have no chance for survival.

    Here's your real #1: Undertaker Loses The Streak
    Undertaker had a 21-0 record spanning 24 years when he stepped into the ring against Brock Lesnar, and most believed he'd end up being 22-0 before the end of the night. Instead, an already super over Lesnar fractured his skull and concussed him during the course of the match, pinning Undertaker. It is a testament to UT he walked out(!!!) under his own power to collapse in the back. The shock and pure disappointment resulted in an estimated 25,000 people walking out, one of them being Shawn Michaels, during the Divas match that never had a chance.
    Oh, and the epilogue? Lesnar vanished for four months from TV after the win. Gotta put that part-timer over and keep him fresh! Everybody lost, and a guaranteed draw come WrestleMania time died just because Vince thought it would be a good idea. BONUS: Vince also jobbed Charlotte Flair in 90 seconds later that year to Natalya on RAW, and why? Because he figured nobody would remember. Luckily, he was right.

    • @markv1274
      @markv1274 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it's hindsight. At the time, it wasn't a bad decision. Motoko Baba was the business mind behind All Japan for many years. Misawa was a worker. Who was to know that Misawa would take just about everybody with him to form his own company? Look at Japanese wrestling now, pretty much every company pushes the same thing. All Japan was vastly different from New Japan. The company was a strong draw right up until Giant Baba's demise. Giant Baba knew that he was on a winner, yet Misawa (for whatever reason) wanted a change in direction after Baba's passing.
      Remember, it's a dumb decision only if it seems dumb at the time. A regrettable decision, maybe, yet not a stupid one. It's not fair to judge these things with the benefit of hindsight.
