He was smothered by accident and she ended up in prison. If anyone thinks Kristi Noem leads a "rural farm life" as most folks picture it (dirty, strenuous, physical, long days etc), they're delusional. She most likely lived(s) on a rural property that someone else actually farms although they might let her sit in the tractor for a photo op, and goes pheasant hunting for fun. We just adopted an 18 month old puppy from an animal shelter. She is energetic and at times a little mischievous, just like most puppies. We found her a good trainer, and her behavior has definitely improved. The fact that Noem chose to kill rather than put the time and effort into training Cricket reveals that the Governor is a LAZY MONSTER and lacks in all leadership skills.
I feel so bad for South Dakota.

I just held my elderly chihuahua while he was having a seizure. I spoke quietly to him to let him know that I love him, and that I was there and it would be alright. I have done this on several occasions......I still love him....no matter what. He is part of our family. This woman's actions speaks loudly of what type of person she is. Words are cheap....but if you want to know who a person really is.....watch how they treat their pets (working animal or not).......actions speak louder than words.......

I hate Noem for this story. This INFURIATES me. She could have given the dog to someone who knew how to deal with dogs that have behavioral issues. Often it's the dog owner who has behavioral issues and needs to be trained. This story demonstrates that Noem is incapable of being a leader.

I grew up on a ranch we had dogs, goats, cats, horses, cattle, even a racoon. We never killed any of the animals for misbehaving. I did have a dog that was too excitable to work and caused havoc around stock. I gave him away to a guy for a pet..
we had a dog that would kill goats we had to put her down because we were afraid of her getting out and going after a child,,,

I had my first dog, Ceebo, over 50 years ago. He was accidentally killed by a moving truck, and we had a "dog" funeral for him... with a casket, flowers and a grave. He still remains a part of my life today. My personal computer is named after him.

I have a German short-haired pointer and you're right. She took a little bit longer to become housebroken, but once she caught on it was off to the races. I never had to teach her anything more than 2 or 3 times before she got it.

If a dog is game driven, as hunting breeds are, you need a skilled trainer to train them, and you don’t take them around chickens. My dad trained hunting dogs for decades, and he always said that a poorly behaved dog reflected on the owner’s lack of skill and knowledge. A dog under the age of 2 is a BABY! It’s a BABY dog! It’s also a living soul, and should be treated as such, with patience and compassion. If you can’t train her, REHOME HER!

I live on a farm and have an excellent farm dog with high prey drive. He had to be trained from a young age to leave chickens alone, but he learned and never killed one. But if he wasn’t trained he would have done the same thing as poor Cricket, I’m sure of it. You need to train your dogs around birds - she is a strange, ignorant person.

We had an abused hunting dog from the shelter, we took care of her until she died from cancer 10 years later, and I loved that dog despite all of her quirks and shortcomings as a pet, likely due to the brain damage/trauma she suffered. I was a young boy at the time and the realization that my dog was physically abused by her prior owner brought me to tears several times, as does this story. I don't understand how people can be so cruel to their own pets, just because they're hunting dogs. It feels very irresponsible and callous to put down a dog for those reasons alone.
She should be charged for animal cruelty. The dog and goat weren't even sick to do that to either of them. We have a responsibility to protect animals from inhumane treatment.

Eric, While she definitely went about it in one of many very wrong ways, any dog which is uncontrollable and destroys poultry is required to be destroyed by law in many many parts of the USA. If the owner doesn't do it "on their own" they can be required to surrender any and potentially all animals under their care to be destroyed. Again, the method was deplorable, and that goat (and others?‽) didn't deserve to get drug into the insanity, but for once I at least understand some of what could have driven the actions of a Conservative politician. I had a Weimaraner that as a younger dog wasn't a good dog for hunting. It took time and training - and at the age of 2 years old became an excellent bird dog. Also, why didn't she have the dog leashed to prevent her from getting out and killing the chickens? The story is disgusting.
Apparently she also took an untrained puppy without a reliable recall out into the field and expected that the more experienced hunting dogs would train her dog for her. Nothing about this situation says she was ever a responsible dog owner for Cricket.

If a 14-month old dog is not in training, that is because the owner is not working with it daily, that means every day for a period of time, reinforcing good behavior, and helping the dog understand who is the provider and alpha. It.....takes......time , and patience. I don't believe for a moment Noem has spent any consistent time with "Cricket", perhaps only her daughter. The description from the book first points out how a typical young dog would react put with other dogs: no attention span, what little training out the window, and the ludicrousness of the idea the older dogs were going to "teach" her dog anything, is insane. They are dogs, not teachers. To subsequently release an untrained 14-month birddog into a yard where there are chickens, which my guess Cricket had never encountered before, was an invitation for disaster. This again points out the deficiencies in the owner, NOT the dog. Noem somehow concludes (and this is like a leap across the Grand Canyon in logic) Cricket must be shot, is sociopathic (all about how this dog had the audacity to embarrass her) and, narcissistic (all about how it made her "appear" to others; which is THE most important to the narcissist). Don't admit she needs to spend more time working with the dog (if any before the incidents) , don't hire a trainer to work with the family and the dog, don't admit defeat and give the dog to a loving family who would love to take in a dog, no, ............shoot it. Kill an innocent animal that unconditionally loved the family as her new pack. There was only one clueless one here: Noem. She should be charged with animal cruelty and prosecuted. My bet is Noems and Trumps mental illnesses would comprise a significant section of the DSM-V ( the Diagnostic Service Manual, 5th edition) for Psychiatric clinicians. IOW, they are mentally ill. Just look at their behaviors. Who would shoot a 14-month old dog rather than give it away? This speaks volumes.
As someone who grew up on a farm in Texas, we had plenty of misbehaving animals but we never felt that it amounted to being put down. If they were that bad we would have just taken them to an animal shelter or givin them to another family.. but kill them? that is just ridiculous

No. I live in the heartland surrounded by farms and ranches and NO ONE would do this. If uou think an animal needs to be put down, you ALWAYS call the vet FIRST, NO MATTER WHAT, and get THEIR OPINION FIRST and then IF that's the ONLY option, you have the VET, do it compassionately, be they a small animal OR a large animal. You don't go out and blow it's head off. That's extremely inhumane.
