The Vikings definitely discovered N. America, but didn't settle or stay very long and really only traded there most of the time, I think. Not to mention, Amerigo/Americus Vespucci, our namesake, just a few years after Columbus, actually found the mouth (and more) of the Amazon River, Guyana, and was all around the east coast of S. America, being the one to actually realize it was a separate continent from Asia, and there's some stuff about him potentially going up the East Coast of N. America, from FL and up, I think.

Not America, but I recall that my family in the Bahamas mentioned that Discovery Day for Columbus was replaced in 2013 with celebrating heroes in Bahamian History instead.
theres a big movement to change Columbus Day to indigenous peoples day, which I like way better and still rolls off the tongue pretty well, and applies to the entire world that has indigenous people

In Virginia we renamed Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day to give a middle finger to Columbus by celebrating the population he killed.
