Fun fact, the guy who should be credited with discovering America is Norse explorer Leif Erikson, who landed in what is now Newfoundland.
So we should all be doing what SpongeBob SquarePants did and celebrate Leif Erikson day, which is October 9th.

The Vikings definitely discovered N. America, but didn't settle or stay very long and really only traded there most of the time, I think.
Not to mention, Amerigo/Americus Vespucci, our namesake, just a few years after Columbus, actually found the mouth (and more) of the Amazon River, Guyana, and was all around the east coast of S. America, being the one to actually realize it was a separate continent from Asia, and there's some stuff about him potentially going up the East Coast of N. America, from FL and up, I think.

Everyone thought that the world is supposed to end on December 21, 2012. But here's a fun fact: Did you know that the Mayan Calendar resets itself to 0 every 52 years or so? If that's the case, what happened to the apocalypses of 1960, 1908, 1856, 1804, and so on?

"Las Vegas culture" is the name given to many Archaic settlements which flourished between 8000 BCE and 4600 BCE. (10,000 to 6,600 BP) near the coast of present-day Ecuador.

This is history! You seem to be a great teacher! I would've loved your class in high school. I'm glad I did have teachers like you in high school and college!

Not America, but I recall that my family in the Bahamas mentioned that Discovery Day for Columbus was replaced in 2013 with celebrating heroes in Bahamian History instead.

We still call it Columbus Day in Delaware unfortunately.

I'm from Louisiana. It's still Columbus Day, I didn't even know there was a renaming.

theres a big movement to change Columbus Day to indigenous peoples day, which I like way better and still rolls off the tongue pretty well, and applies to the entire world that has indigenous people

Not from the US but I am from the Bahamas and when I heard the news that they changed it in the states I was happy about it.
Still waiting for the Bahamian Government to figure themselves out on the matter.

In Virginia we renamed Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day to give a middle finger to Columbus by celebrating the population he killed.

Saying the British fought the French TO DEFEND the colonists instead of just simply protecting their interests and greed... Because the English never fights the French, just this one time to protect the colonists I'm sure!

It was a school project. Despite including a few incorrect bits, I'd probably give him a pretty high grade if I was the teacher who gave him this assignment.
