    My water pump exploded one day on the high way and there was smoke coming cause it was way too hot, but these porsche videos always will be help for the future!

    • @BeatTheBush

      Yeah, mine exploded and I stopped about 30 seconds later. I suspect, it built up too much heat to cause it to smoke.

      The temperature indicator failure light just stopped blinking at me. That means that all is well and I finally finished replacing my water pump. It doesn’t leak a drop. I had to put the project on hold during my midterm exam, but now it’s done. What a great feeling!! Thanks again.

    Excellent video. And thanks for sharing the mistakes also, that is very instructive so that we know what to watch out for as we work on our cars. One note on coolant from a friend of mine that has been a Porsche mechanic for over 40 years. He states that it is really better to purchase the Porsche formula G-30-91 EF antifreeze/coolant. It may be more expensive but has an antigel characteristic that many other brands/formulas don't have (& in result tend to solidify over time). You or someone else may be able to comment more on this.

    your videos were all great and i was able to see some problems of my 2001 porsche . i learned many things. although my big problem right now ia my coolant leak and because of your video i learned to open and expose the engine where i was able to change the serpentine belt. the noise were gone. but i notice a leak in the water pump accidentally which cause the coolant to drop everyday spending already a lot of coolant in liters. wish i hav the chance to show you my video on the water pump leak. but probably i vant do it myself and might just ask an expert to replace it. thank you and im learning. you are great!

    • @BeatTheBush

      Thanks! glad you are able to change your own belt. Just tackle jobs you are comfortable with first. I had to work up to doing the water pump from doing things simpler. You just do more and more complex things as you do more work on the car.

    Great video! You probably just prevented me getting stranded. My belt squeaks when I start it sometimes so I knew it probably needed to be changed but I haven't made the time. But when you mentioned how it affects the steering and alternator I remember the steering feels off and the new battery was low the other day. Just ordered a new belt, Thank You!

    • @BeatTheBush

    I bought a Gates pump for my Boxster for $100 and it was in much better condition, aluminum impeller and everything.
    It still came with a crappy paper gasket so I used a new OEM metal gasket.

      Ahh, glad your pump is in better condition. I got the paper gasket on now so we'll see how much it matters. I've seen pics of the plastic impeller breaking but I still really not sure if a metal one would be better.

    gud day. im julian from the philippines. just bought this 2001 porsche just to experience a sports car once in my life. i chose the old 2001 porsche fitting my budget at 1.2 mil pesos instead of buying a new mazda sports car at 1.8 mil pesos. the porsche just look very fresh and good. after using it in a week i noticed some problems which i did not consider before buying it. surprisingly, parts and labor are expensive here in the philippines unlike in your country. i started to watch many of your videos and it will be a big help to work on it all. i will probably try if i can to do some mechanical works. i dont know if i hav to repent buying an old porsche coz i notice the ff problems like shock absorbers not functioning well, the leaking coolant i found when i changed the serpentine after hearing sqeaking sound, and the breakpad. thank you so much for your videos and i am learning. any advise you can give me ?

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Advice? Drive it a few miles a day. These cars do not like to sit for too long. The water vapors rust things, the oil comes down and makes starting it very harmful for your car. Over time, it has serious implications on the life of it if you do not turn it on.

    I saw a 1998 Boxster for sale for $6400 today with 92k mileage, and just wondering what kind of nightmare the engine is to work on before I even consider buying one. Surprised to see an engine access panel! I figured you had to drop the engine to install water pump/spark plugs/air filter lol

      Yeah, no dropping engine needed to do those.

    • @jeffreyjaguar6929
      @jeffreyjaguar6929 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're a bitchh to work on . Everything is tight and hard to access. Car low to the ground. My old Jeep Wrangler with a lift kit was a breeze to work on. This one is not easy even if you have a hydraulic lift. I've done an alternator and water pump so far and both were an exercise in frustration just because of tight quarters. Also done brakes, battery and clutch safety switch. Those were simple.

  • @robdelorenzo5974
    @robdelorenzo5974 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So how did the cheaper pump last? Did you have any problems with it?
    Also, how do you torque the bolt that sits next to the engine case and is tricky to remove/replace?
    Thanks and keep up the good work, please!
    These videos are well produced, informative, and quite helpful!

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's still going since this video. If I do have problem, not that I did it once. I can probably swap it out in about an hour or two, no prob. I torque it with a very strange combination of attachments as it requires something low profile AND needed a slight angle bend to come off the edge. I haven't done many Porsche vids since there hasn't been a need for any maintenance on my car. As a I type this I am working on replacing my water pump. I could take out 6 bolts but not the 7th one. This one is on the right side of the water pump and there no clearance to put my 10mm wrench or ratchet. got stuck and started to look for help on youtube. You mentioned it is the hardest one but I need more info about the custom tool that you made.

    • @AverageGuy513
      @AverageGuy513 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      got it thank you. I could not build the same tool as you did. But 1/4 ratchet and 10mm 1/4 socket from homedepot did the job. I got this new Pierburg water pump with a gasket but don't know if the gasket that came with the pump is a metal one or a paper gasket. The instructions says, apply RTVseal for paper gaskets. After watching your video, I could guess the one came with the pump was a metal one it is stiff like what you showed and also has a notch at the middle of the gasket. The older one also is similar but has the RTV sealant applied it. So I doubt if old one was the original. I am guessing the previous owner replaced this part at some point. Also I didn't find anything visually or mechanically wrong with the old pump no wobble. I suspect that RTV sealant caused the water leaking and not the bearings.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I did read that they caution against using sealants because it causes the surface to be uneven. When I bolted down the new water pump, it only leaked when heated up and not when it's cool. It's really up to you how to go about this. Some would put in the new one since it's a pain to do it again. Others would give the old one with a new gasket with the surface area contact cleaned. But if it leaks again, you need to go in there again.

  • @Intermittal
    @Intermittal 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm not sure it's bad to have those fins made of plastic - from what I've read, if the metal ones sheer off while the engine's running, they can do a lot more damage. I'm no expert though.

    • @jeffreyjaguar6929
      @jeffreyjaguar6929 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeatTheBush The next step after replacing water pump is refilling the coolant. Not as straightforward as a typical radiator. There are two caps (reservoir and filling) and a bleed valve. Also the burping process and many recommend a special vacuum system for the process.
      In a nutshell, I used a clean bucket to catch all the coolant that came out when I removed the lower hoses. About 2 gallons. Then took off the top engine cover and opened the filling cap and bleed valve. Added the same coolant back to the system, plus about 2 liters of distilled water. This brought it to the fill line under the reservoir cap. To burp out any air I drove it (gently) for about 20 minutes with both caps on and the bleed valve open and the heater running. After that, close bleed valve and replace top engine cover.

    • @BeatTheBush

      If your temp goes up, can you tell if your hoses are clogged? You might want to check if the coolant is flowing to the radiator and if the radiator has too many leaves or dirt stuck in it.

    Replace the wobbling crank shaft pulley "at some point"!? Dude. replace it as soon as possible, nothing good will come of that and it's likely the culprit for vibrating and walking the water pump pulley off. Good news is you can replace it with a high-performance one very easily. Great video! thumbs up! good luck.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol, yeah I know. I already got the part and about to change it. I also think it might be the result of the resonant vibration when you take the pedal off the gas around 3000 rpm. We'll see if that fixes things.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Yep, I changed the crank shaft pulley already in another video. Turns out it made things much better but there is still some resonance at 3k rpm. Like a muffler issue perhaps.

    • @Boxster2024
      @Boxster2024 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BeatTheBush Most likely that vibration around 3000 rpm when you lift off the throttle is due to a worn out front motor .

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not familiar with what a 'front motor' is. I assume is a part that spins somewhere in the engine? From what I can gleam, it's the first gear after going from the engine into the transmission?

      I only happen around 3k rpm. At 2900/3100, it's gone. Only happens when I let off the gas pedal and the rpm slows down to 3k. When it happens, it feels like something vibrating and can be felt and heard. I just try not to slow down to 3k these days. When I accelerate from 2-4k, everything is normal.

    So my boxter makes a high(98 boxter) pitchsqueek noise when i drive it. One day i was messing with the paddle shifters and i think i down shifted to fast. I was only going about 20mph then i down shifted. Once i down shifted, the abs and battery light came on. I could still drive it. But power steering was stiff & immediately the temperature when up quick. I parked and then i seen coolant leaking bad from the back.(i herd a bubbling Sound from the water pum area. I waited about half an hour for it to cool down and i was only a block away from my house so i drove it. What could be the issue? Maybe the water pump hose? Because it still runs.

      @BeatTheBush  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Battery dead could mean alternator broke. Power steering couldn't have gone out at the same time as unlikely. Temp going up might mean water pump failed, again, cant mean they all failed at once. The thing that connects all is the serpentine belt. I would guess it snapped.
      It then would not drive the water pump resulting in over temp. It will not drive the power steering resulting in stiff steering. It will not drive the alternator resulting in low battery. Low battery may cause the ABS light to turn on probably.
      You're welcome. Tip me via Paypal on my TH-cam about page.

    You should have immediately changed out the vibrating Crank Pulley. It won't last long shaking like that.

      idiot lights = check engine light?
      Here's a dart in the dark. Is your alternator broken? If it is, it could be not charging your battery.

    Would advise new metal gasket for anyone watching. Once you deform a gasket, you should not use it again. Gasket is only $7 anyways.

    It's important to use the right coolant to avoid inadvertent corrosion to Porsche engine components such as aluminum components. Porsche requires OAT (Orangic Acid Technology) coolant that's free of borate, nitrite, phosphate, silicate and amines chemicals. After a bit of searching, I found and used for my Cayman S an aftermarket coolant that satisfies Porsche requirements and is significantly cheaper than the Porsche coolant. peakauto.com/products/antifreeze-coolants/automotive/oet-european-vehicle-coolant-extended-life-pink/

    I don't really understand why you would skimp on parts for an asset worth so much. If you fit a bad water pump and it fails, it could be a KO for your engine. Why not just spend the money and buy the recommended parts?

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because if it fails, I can EASILY put in a new one now that I know how. My water pump went bad already but my engine didn't KO because I was watching the temp.

    • @Neroslinger
      @Neroslinger 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      From a purely financial point of view, would it not be better to pay a little more for a lesser chance of engine damage (if the temp light is on, its already too hot) and less likely to need to buy another one in the near future due to more likely likely failure? I was thinking of doing the same thing but I settled with a OE water pump.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This pump lasted 1 year 4 months so far. It is cheap as heck. The car is worth $6k. I guess it is unknown if I will get in trouble for using such a cheap pump. I tend to risk a bit until I learn my lesson. I learn more this way rather than let fear cause me to spend more. So far, I think there is little risk because many other things could make your engine overheat. I monitor the temp guage like all the other gauges so that it doesn't happen.
