I’m a 30 year old man who has a friendship with a 71 year old woman and her friendship means a lot to me more than most of the ones in my age group. She’s taught me a lot about respect but not only that, but how to be positive in life and be happy with what I have. She’s been a widow for 30+ years, and she’s also unfortunately lost a lot of other people, including her parents at a young age and she’s still positive and loving life. Respect your elders, not only because of what they have been through or their age, but also because they are human beings who deserve respect just like everyone else

Sending love and respect to you Brendon. I had the privilege of being a mate to a man in his 30's while I'm in my 70's.. we ended up meeting when lived at same property. I'm a care aide who used to work in long term care, but now work in an assisted living facility. The people I look after are, for the most part, quite lovely and I've learned a lot from them. The elderly have a lot to teach us and we need to listen to them and learn from them.

  • @thefilipinojoe
    @thefilipinojoe ปีที่แล้ว +16

One of the things I love about Filipinos is that they're typically very kind and respectful to others. In western societies, that isn't always the case, which is one of the big reasons I prefer living in the Philippines.
Disrespect can be blatant, but it isn't typically dished out so. Talking down to anyone, especially an older person is disrespectful.
A disrespectful person usually derives their disrespectful ways from insecurity and low self-esteem. In essence, they're pretty miserable human beings who want to make everyone around them miserable, too.
A person who is disrespectful to others is often trying desperately, often unknowingly, to feel better about themselves by looking down on others. Sometimes their aim is to try to find something negative about other people so they can one up them and feel like they're superior.
Disrespectful behavior comes in a variety of different packages, but you will definitely feel it when someone is dishing it out to you.
Disrespect can simply be done by someone ignoring you, pretending they don't have any free time to respond to you, talk to you, or get back to you. When the truth is they're getting off on treating you like you're a rug, unimportant and not their favorite rug.
A person may also disrespect you by asking a personal question in a way that seems curious rather than disrespectful. But of course, their mere questioning you is disrespectful, especially when what they're asking about may be highlighting something negative or unattractive about you and is absolutely none of their business.
What do we do when we're being disrespected, or worse, abused?
I run into lots of people who allow themselves to be disrespected or abused ongoing. That often comes from their belief that people can change or worse, that they can change them. While that can certainly happen, huge chances are it won't ever happen.
It's not our responsibility to change others. It's their responsibility. Our responsibility is only to ourselves. The one we have the power to change is ourselves, not others.
Whenever I encounter anyone disrespectful or abusive, I get away from them as quickly as possible and I stay away from them.
Like any other wild or crazy animal, an abusive or disrespectful type of person is flawed in a way that you can't trust.
Unfortunately, many people are treated so badly in life because they don't exit a bad situation or relationship. For whatever reason, they remain in what I can only describe as a living hell.
When it comes to disrespect, abuse, etc., I live by these words. No way. Get away. Stay away.

I'm a young 59. Over the decades I'd find myself sitting with elderly people at the local greasy spoon. Some were tradesmen, others blue collar workers. The knowledge these men and women have is phenomenal. Sit and listen for a couple hours you never know what you can learn. About 15 years ago one lady taught me how to make blind dovetails. Something I seen my dad do but he died before teaching me.

For young people, who can benefit from someone who's navigated the waters of life, it's enriching and empowering to be taken under the wing of one more experienced & wise.
It may help them avoid those "If only I'd known *then* what I know now" moments... later on in life. Think how much time you'd put to better use!

I completely agree that we live in an ageist society, but I rarely witness the level of direct confrontational bullying from young people against older people, particularly older women, that's depicted in these films. I recall a viral video from 2011 or 2012 of a group of middle school boys, who relentlessly bullied and harassed an elderly woman on a school bus. Ironically, the woman was on the bus to protect the kids. The cruelty and disrespect from the kids was horrifying, but was fortunately not an everyday occurrence. This is NOT to say that elderly people aren't frequently the targets of extreme physical and sexual violence, as well as robbery, which is typically not perpetrated by the type and manner depicted in these videos. These criminals aren't just snot-nosed, bratty teens calling an old woman an ugly hag and refusing to help pick up her groceries. These are extremely violent offenders, who pray on weaker people. Just tune into your local news every day to see who they are.
