  • Go behind the scenes as we explore the major controversy taking place in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle class from the Gatornationals in Gainesville, FL, as team Matt Smith tells all in this class expose where according to Smith the rules are greatly influenced by a very powerful team. In this battle of Team Matt Smith vs. Team Vance and Hines we watch the entertaining semifinal races involving LE Tonglet, Gaige Herrera, Matt Smith and his wife Angie Smith in what is a v twin vs. Suzuki showdown. We also discuss the reign of dominance Vance & Hines has had on the class, 18 years of exclusivity with Harley-Davidson, the introduction of the S&S Buell Pro Stock V-Twin and Vance & Hines new billet cases, four valve heads and crankshafts they sell to almost all of their competitors. After we watch the final go down we head inside the trailer of Matt Smith to get the unfiltered truth from the six-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion. We also hear what his father, Pro Model legend "Tricky" Rickie Smith has to say about the situation. Enjoy this behind the scenes look at what has to be one of the biggest controversies in drag racing. #motorcycle #motorcycles #dragracing #nhradragracing #nhra #racing

I don’t think he is complaining about loosing. He is complaining that there is equality in the class. The 4 cylinders clearly have an advantage. He tried to go to suzuki but the only ones making parts for that engine is the team winning everything and they don’t make parts available to competitors. The v-twins are limited by the rules. A true racer wants to win fairly. And if they ever skirted the rules and got caught every win and championship would be called into question. If the other brand beats you by a tenth at that level and beats you in every part of the track it’s not you. I don’t follow this type of racing and don’t care about it. This type of drag racing has become the rich mans game. Back in late 80's very early 90's I would help Pizza John, who in 89 had the championship for prostock. He would spend $20,000 a year and put in a lot of late nights. Schultz would be spending like $100,000 yearly. I can't even imagine what they spend now. A V&H crankshaft is $5500.00 you can bet cases are like $30,000 and your not even close to having a complete engine yet.

NHRA was making the Hemi cars add weight as well to slow them down but smart racers would add the weight in the rear tube chassis frames that had fill & drain caps welded in so they could change the bias weight on the cars for better traction and launch .

There were crew chiefs in drag racing that had always faster cars then their competition, for a variety of reasons. Maybe they worked longer and harder, tested more or knew people who could design and make better parts. Or maybe they were just smarter. NHRA should create a rule that if you are to race in Pro/Stock you should be made to sell parts to competitors even if you are the only one to make them.
Anyone giving NHRA a cheque for a million dollars every year knows it's a bribe.

I remember when Ricky Smith would speak against unfair rules in other classes, he too was more often than not, correct. When Matt brings up points of contention he is also more often than not, correct. There will always be teams and manufacturers that have a favored advantage in NHRA.

Only solution is to have 2 classes for V twins and one for 4 cylinder bikes. Penalizing one to make the other competitive is not the answer. I can't win so make the other bike slower, in my opinion that is just wrong. And to call one H-D and the other Suzuki is just stupid. Neither bike is even close to a factory machine. There is not one factory part in either bike. And call them Pro Stock where is the stock not even close.

V&H got where they are by working there butt's off. So does this mean that if Pat Musi sells you a engine he also has to tell every trick he uses to make his cars win. No, You buy his motor and you develop your own program. Or you can Whine a lot and lose.

I don’t know why Pro stock motorcycle should be different from the other pro classes. Top fuel is limited to 500 cubic inches in dragsters and funny cars and pro stock cars are the same. Harley needs to build a four cylinder engine and quit making excuses and expecting favoritism and huge displacement advantages. Speed costs money so how fast do you want to go?NHRA changed the rules for bikes because Harley was winning a popularity contest but that is coming to an end.

one thing is for sure on the after market side of street bikes and normal people NOBODY runs vance and hines parts unless they buy a bike with them already on it they are way to high and just do NOT make the power that alot of the new companies parts do this is also why you see a big surge on the no prep side people want to see normal people have a chance to win and do not want to see it where to compete you must have a certain engine and millions in backing this is something that is killing America not just racing politics companies being allowed to have a monopoly over all that is not what this country is supposed to be about if you race it you have to sell the exact same thing love the idea of 16 bikes all the same and draw chips and do not let vance and hindend service it

2:52 That race Rivas went on to the final to race Eddie Kraewick, beat Eddie, 6:92 to a 7:07. Kraewick went on to win the championship without winning a race, 2nd time that happened in NHRA history. Craig Trebel in the race you showed was actually a paid Vance & Hines rider for the race as a blocker. He was on one of Matt Hines Suzuki frames that he'd won a his last championship on, Craig said that frame was best he'd ever ridden, glided down the track.

These are interesting conversations. I’m curious why NHRA did not address these stats in the off season. I don’t follow drag racing much these days, the shade tree guys got pushed out a while ago. Racing is a manufacturing company compitition. Personally I don’t agree with any Rent a Racer policy especially when a single company looks to be competing unfairly. But just a fan these days.
I do have more respect for this commentator lately. He speaks up out of love for the sport.

I'm not exactly an old dog, but aint a young buck either. While i see the desire for a team to want proprietary parts as their advantage, ultimately this is a STOCK category. Stock should inherently mean available as is, readily available, or available to all without or with very minor exceptions.
My memory may be fading, but I seem to remember in some stock categories (can't remember if straight line or circle), that if you had a modified part that conformed to stock specs, it couls be used for X amount of time before it needed to be made openly available to the entire class, even if you weren't using it on your vehicle anymore.
I think that in all stock categories, pro and sportsman, should be put into place at a maximum for use in competition of a part exclusively for that season only where you would need to make available for sale or machining guides to machine your own to their specs starting the following year January 1st. The one exemption is if younintroduce it during one of the final two races of the season only, then you can keep keep exclusivity for the following season if you choose to, then made available to all as aforementioned.
You introduce something at Gainesville that works amazing, and then you have all year at your advantage. Great! January 1st comes around, it all has to be available to anyone in class who may want to purchase it or make it themselves if the maker isn't capable of mass manufacturing them. Cost and data for part sales OR spec sheets for manufacture must be made available to the NHRA and all teams/racers in the class. As Matt alludes to in the video, this should go for any type of different fuel mix as well. (IMO, all engines of the same manufacturer should be running on the same fuel if not all engines in class).
This gives innovation an advantage for a time, but it also keeps the equality of stock racing equally available after a time.
In this circumstance, V&H would be seeking parts because no way they would give up manufacturing sirens for someone else to make their money, I mean product for them.
I think we could also see innovation from smaller builders as well with an open source sort of parts manufacturing catalog as time goes on. Putting more of the racers back into the equation on the track while spurring performance should be the goal, not complete exclusivity and kickbacks.
    My 2 cents at least....

WOW -- You're thinking the NHRA might play favorites... Like it's not something they haven't done FOREVER..... I've been drag racing motorcycles (NMRA) and cars since the 60's. Had my I/Gas and J/gas cars outlawed by NHRA using a wheelbase rule back in the days. Even helped Byron and Terry move out of Russ Collins shop when they started out on their own. Mad respect for what they have done through the years. I can't hate Vance and Hines for protecting their wallet. But it does hurt the class when everything has gone billet with only one supplier instead of requiring 'stock' parts.

Being a Brit, who loves watching this sport. What i cannot understand is! Is there a ruling that prohibits other manufacturers entering the arena? If there is no such restriction then surely the money that is in this sport would allow someone to have their own Machine shop, and sell their products to other teams.
I think that in modern times the vehicles,Cars or bikes should be equal and allow the drivers/Riders to display their skills. I know a lot of people would find this boring. But surely this would be true competition? If that means that someone becomes dominant! Then they receive a weight penalty. As in Horse Racing. Modern Motorsport is ! Who has the best facilities,Who has the most money.
