Even though this song is far from a suicide note and does not foreshadow his death, it definitely would have been on Basement if it werent for the nature of his death. It would have been such a fitting addition - musically and thematically - to that album. AND... I pretty much guarantee that he was in the process of revising it, meaning that it was likely only a demo! ...what a talented asshole.
That’s one of the endless reasons why I love Elliott. The majority (if not all) of his music was recorded in analog. It gives the songs that glowing warmth. I’m no good at articulating... but for me, it gives the recording this organic feel as opposed to the more stiff, robotic sound of digital 🖤
I had the tune years ago but never with any lyrics. what a find! I know there are a lot of b sides out there that haven't been released by anyone, i'd pay darn near anything to get a listen too.
This is actually quite a positive song in a sense. It seems to be one of Elliott's "I'm tired of people labeling me as depressed guy" songs. Elliott seemed more tuned into reality than most people, but having your eyes open in this world is really fucking difficult, as you can't just be a sheep and not question life. so he escaped reality with drugs. Just as he was breaking out of his escapism, he gets killed by a dodgy associate (His girlfriend). Elliott needed to be around different people
I don’t think that’s true. When he died, he was on crazy withdrawals. He basically decided he wanted to get clean and got clean way too fast. Prescription medication, street drugs, it all drove him over.
There's this huge write up on the internet about Elliott shortly after his death and it mentions it somewhere in there. It seemed legit cause there interviews from his sister about his car, his ex, and more. I just looked for it again and can't find the story, found it late one night.
I don't understand these conspiracy theories surrounding Elliott's death. This was a guy who threatened to kill himself throughout most of his life, and tried more than once. Stabbing yourself in the heart isn't actually that uncommon, and there's some evidence Elliott had attempted such a method before. Suicide was the natural conclusion to Elliott's life, I think he always knew it was going to end that way. RIP Elliott, I wouldn't be here without you.
I dont either he even has several songs setting it in stone *like king crossing* but I guess people would rather belive his life was taken not thrown away
it was actually a mistake in the report. it did have the extra t. also, If she did stab him, Elliott would never wanted his girlfriend to be blamed for murder(he was too nice), so he probably wrote the note so it seemed like a suicide.

Wow the dynamics on this surprised me so much. I'm so used to modern production and this really woke me up. Love it.

This song was recorded during recording sessions form October 19th-20th 2003...this is supposedly the last song Elliott ever recorded.
I would pay to have this song - I LOVE Elliott Smith and this is a treasure to me!!

Wow...finally I hear lyrics behind this music!!!!
The drums at the end are great

How did you get hold of this? i thought his estate (His family) were withholding it ??
Elliott was known to give burned CDs of unfinished songs to people close to him, which would inevitably be shared and leaked online
@BombardWithMuffins it was the day before according to an artical by Liam gowing
cats and dogs
He recorded this the day before he ended his life. 10 years ago today. R.I.P. Elliott. You are very much missed.

It's called, Mr. Misery by: Liam Gowing on Spin magazine. I was just reading it

Elliott looks really young in that pic, wonder when it was made.
it's not that rare actually...
kamikaza...
Yo he was probably murdered

its kinda weird he died like a little bit later by committing suicide and the song is called suicide machine
+hill eva wow great observation
+hill eva mind=blown
+johnnyBuz072 the level of sarcasm is absolutely unbearable.
Would be legitimately ironic the actual lyrics of the song fitted into what you're implying.
