Thanks for this. I'll be flying into Buffalo in 4 weeks to ride the whole thing for the first time!

My first ride on the Erie was solo. You will be fine. It is a great route.

Thoroughly enjoy your videos - straight forward information with good tips and suggestions. Will add Cycle the Erie Canal to the Bicycle Trip List my son and I are working on. Please keep riding and sharing!

The ride has always been a lot of fun and hopefully next year it will host 700 riders as it has done in the past. The more the merrier.

I realize that most everybody would say "don't worry" but I don't see any security for the bicycles while sleeping in the tent, etc. I'm not comfortable keeping my $7K bicycle without sufficient security.
Did I miss something in that regard?

Everybody that wants can find a place to lock up. The places with the highest risk, I suppose, are Buffalo, Syracuse and Rome. Other camps are very rural. Regardless, there is usually a place such as a tree, tall pole, or lamp post where you can lock up. I don't think that anybody would say "don't worry". There have been thefts of unlocked bikes on the ride in the past.

@@EdeksAttic Even if one locks their bicycle that doesn't stop the thief from taking a seat, etc. Regardless, there are only 2 locks that are good enough (can't be cut with an electric cutter but they can be picked as any lock can) and they can't be carried and are meant to be placed at a known location.
What the organizers should have is a guarded truck where the bikes are locked, if that's even feasible.
Nah, I'm going Inn to Inn alone (figuring I'll meet plenty of people along the way) while keeping my bicycle in my room.
      Thanks for the info.

@@lazurm Having just purchased a $4000 Giant Defy, I don't blame you! Bike theft has been high since Covid started (or perhaps it has been a constant?). In any case, good for you for protecting a great investment!

i ride an ebike and wanted to do this trip, do they have power available at each of the locations you stopped and rested at?

This was a ride produced by Parks and Trails New York and they specifically excluded ebikes from the tour. There were about 300 riders this year and typically the tour attracts over 700. It would be a logistical challenge for PTNY to provide charging capabilities for an unknown number of ebikes at the camp sites. Staying at hotels or commercial camp grounds would be the only way, in my opinion, to be able to reliably charge an ebike each night.
