  • Shogun Showdown: Shogun 1980 Vs. Shogun 2024: Buntaro Archery Shooting Scene - Who Will Win This Showdown? Vote In The Comments. Shogun 1980 was made by NBC and Paramount Studios. Directed by Jerry London; Produced and Screenwritten by Eric Bercovici. Shogun 2024 was made by Walt Disney Studios+, Hulu, & FX. Created and Screenwritten by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. Which is better, or is their a tie? Both versions have their positives and negatives. Each is written from a different perspective, focussing on different aspects of the novel, Shogun. Tanoshimu!
Note: Shogun [1980] is up first, followed by Shogun [2024], and a comparison of the two, followed by a Samurai Shogun Showdown. I tried to upload this 4 times, with the first four times being rejected by TH-cam. Both have their strong points and weak points. Tanoshimu!

Shogun Film Editors were: James T. Heckert, Bill Luciano, Donald R. Rode, Benjamin A. Weissman, and Jerry Young. Many people were involved in the making of this classic masterpiece. There was an A-List Cast, an A-List Director, an A-List Musical Score from Maurice Jarre, and A-List production quality with amazing sets and intricate costumes, detailed for that time era. Narration by the famous and powerful voice of Orson Welles.

In all the comment sections of the comparison videos, it's the memberries of people who saw the original production idolizing it while shitting on the new version. Aside from pulling from the same underlying book, the two shouldn't really be compared, but rather contrasted. I remember watching the original as a kid and remember being captivated as it was groundbreaking for its time, and it deserves plenty of praise. But I am just as captivated if not more with the new version which is clearly done from a much different perspective which impacts how the actors portray the characters.

The original is so much better with most things, particularly the characters and schemes. I cared more about the side characters in the original than any of the characters in the current like the smiling face of capt yoshinaka (sic). And the tension between the church and the capt of the black ship was very intriguing until literally the very end.

I'm old enough to remember the original mini-series. I enjoyed it, and now I am currently enjoying the remake. This comparison should make one thing clear; audience aesthetics also change over time as well as screenwriting styles. Issues of historical accuracy aside, when well-crafted one is not inherently superior to the other, but it does speak to people with certain particularities in mind. In the end, all good entertainment should strive to speak to its audience. If they make another remake 40 years from now, I would expect it to be as different from the current remake as the current version is as different from the original. And that is how art become organic.

Exactly. The new show is not bad, but when you compare it to the orig. show it felt short in many aspects. No chemistry between Blackthorne and Mariko and both cannot hold up to the great performances from Chamberlain and Shimada. Sorry to say, but especially Jarvis is just a tiny little shadow compared to Chamberlain and besides his acting skills he has even to fight with the fact, that they obciously cut down Blackthornes part greatly, which is a shame. And even Sanada is not coming close to Mifune, but that's not a real suprise, because Mifune was truly one of a kind and his stage aura is hardly to beat for Sanada. Mifunes Toranaga seems more mighty and what you would expect from a great japanese clan leader. Conclusion for me, there's way too much hype for the new show, which is still a good show, but not as great as the original show from the 80ties.

So many characters get tossed aside with no development, so many act the same, the lighting is the same in almost every scene, some scenes are rather confusing and you'd be lost unless you saw the original. I think someone had a good point that comparisons are difficult. One thing that comes to my mind is the 1980 version James Clavell was involved in the production whereas the new one his family just turned it over to the the new writers. I do admire their deep dive into the historical aspects but as I have said, before, I read the book (and I’ve read it several times, such a favorite!) it was a love story set against the historical background. It is very out of character for Blackthorne to be so overfamiliar with and to chastise Buntaro like that, very out of character for Mariko to just bluntly translate his words, and for Buntaro to just laugh it off.
In 1980/book Blackthorne had to be prodded by Buntaro's beating of Mariko to lose his caution and patience, qualities harshly instilled into him by his initial stay in Anjiro. And even so, Blackthorne reeled in his rage very quickly, switching back to polite manners, understanding that he, Blackthorne, had no rights in Japan whatsoever.
Mariko would know how dangerous it would be to provoke Buntaro like that and would not translate or would severely soften the tone or even meaning of the words.
Remember, Buntaro accepted the blame for the incident because he was the sole culprit of "disturbing the wa". If Blackthrone were to start the conflict, by a rude comment, he'd very likely be dead on the spot.
2024 has an annoying habit of turning characters into dumb, rude blabbermouths.

    1980 version wins.
    2024 version:
    1. Blackthorne: war, talk, you and gesturing bow and arrow looks like he's mocking Buntaro. And moments before that Buntaro was openly mocking Blackthorne's eating manners.
    2. The arrow flying very close to Mariko's face was done in CGI post production. Did they really need to storyboard the scene with Buntaro uncaring whether his wife got injured? Just to set up the next conversation about treatment of wives/women. And face it, European men were no better at the time either with how they treated women.
With the way things are going, especially with the drastic changes introduced in episode 7, I wouldn't be surprised if at the final episode Toranaga says "Thank you very much Anjin for teaching me everything you know. Buntaro, the Anjin is no longer of any use to me. You may kill him if you wish."

@@theshogunchannel Another scene I think you should make a comparison video, though it will be a short scene in the 2024 version. The scene where Toranaga presents two new swords to Blackthorne.
In the 2024 version, someone brings the swords to Blackthorne and that's it. Toranaga doesn't say anything to Blackthorne about the swords and begins talking about the dead (I can only assume he's referring to anyone who was killed during the earthquake).
In the 1980 version, Toranaga presents the swords to Blackthorne with a short ceremony, and via Mariko who is translating, he emphasizes the importance of being presented with swords.
I think this comparison would be important, because it's another scene where the 2024 version fails to respect Japanese culture, no matter the claims the producers make. It's this scene where Blackthorne officially becomes 'samurai' in terms of status. Before, he was simply a hatamato, and in the novel it says or implies that anyone can become hatamato, even non-samurai. Hatamato is just someone who plays the role of an important servant or follower.

I have only watched small segments until yesterday, as I could not tolerate it. Yesterday, I forced myself to watch the entire episode; it was a torture. The poor acting skills were there in full display, with the actors desperately trying to disguise it by over dramatic emotions. Neither in the book, the original series, nor in feudal Japan, could samurai John Blackthorne speak in a condescending tone to his Master Lord Toranaga (even if said in English), raise his voice at him, point acccusingly at him and storm out of the meeting, without being instantly decapitated for insolence. Yet, this is what they showed yesterday when Toranaga agreed to surrender to the Council of Regents, with Lord Toranaga meekly watching him go. How funny!
If they were trying to add a twist to it, they failed miserably, due to poor acting....So many other scenes too were so badly done. Why is there permanent aura of night and darkness in every single scene, despite the fact that it's broad daylight in many scenes? *Long story short, this version of 2024 stinks, big time!*

My personal opinion is that the Buntaro of 2024 is as good as an actor as the one of the '80s. He excells in the emotional part and this is much more visible since the other characters are not at all excelling.
So Buntaro of the '80 vs Buntaro of 2024 - equal points.
Fujiko: the 2024's Fujiko is more expressive in this scene, so as to create more tension, but it is overdone, because Blackthorne is also overdoing it, while we know aforehead that Mariko had already asked him to be polite undertoning the risk that Buntaro represented. Besides, according to the novel, it was unthinkable for Fujiko to act like that toward her uncle and superior Buntaro. So my points go to the '80s Fujiko.
Mariko: the 2024 Mariko is suitably stony and icy in this scene, but unfortunately, the actress is the same in every other scene as well. My points go to '80s Mariko.
Blackthorne: Jarvis is a failure in acting compared to Chamberlein. If he has allowed the director to force him to act like that, it is still a problem. All points go to Chamberlein's Blackthorne.
Overall: the scene of 2024 has the original detail of Buntaro's arrows going close to Mariko, so close as to wave a tuft of her hair. The '80s series missed that one, I guess in favor of depicting a more educated Buntaro, who was nonetheless brutal enough, or maybe because they most probably thought it would be out of place with the european audience. On the other side, the darkness in the 2024 is overdone. I can bring to memory scenes from the Zatoichi series, where lighting is as well meager, and yet the scene is clear for the viewer. Other than that, I believe that Buntaro would not allow himself to become so drunk as to fall on his behind after the archery feat. And while the detail of the dangerous arrows and the savage face of 2024's Buntaro are not displeasing to me, the dialogue and the plot of the scene in the '80s is far superior and suspensful without resorting to such instruments as coloring and violence and shouting.

Hai, Anjinsama1978-San. Those are the actual video scenes from both Shogun 1980 and Shogun 2024. Shogun 2024 was filmed with very, very dark lighting. Many on this channel have complained about how dark almost everything is in Shogun 2024. I can try and lighten up Shogun 2024, but then, some would accuse me of tampering with the scene. I just re-checked it, and that is how Disney+ Hulu FX released Shogun 2024. If you go to Hulu, you will find the same thing.
