Lt Colonel Allison Brooks was my grandfather. He was a B17 pilot in the 401st, before he was transferred to the mustang. He was piloting the lead bomber this day and would tell me about this day and Howard's flying many times throughout my childhood. He even had a painting with his bomber and Howard's P51 and a flaming 109 from this mission hanging in his study. I just stumbled on this post. My grandpa was my hero growing up. He piloted many planes, the B17, P51, A1 Skyraider and the C130, among others. He always said his favorite to fly was the P51. He retired from the Air Force with 2 stars. This brings tears to my eyes. Thank you so much for telling this story.

"An attack by a single fighter on four or five times his own number wasn't uncommon," wrote a fellow World War II fighter pilot in his postwar memoirs of Howard's performance, "but a deliberate attack by a single fighter against thirty-plus enemy fighters without tactical advantage of height or surprise is rare almost to the point of extinction."
Howard was also the only fighter pilot Medal of Honor recipient in the European Theater. He was also a very capable P-40 pilot (6) with the American Volunteer Group, or more famously known as the Flying Tigers in the Burma campaign.

For everyone asking about the Japanese kill marks on his aircraft, Major (later General) Howard originally was US Navy until Pearl Harbor. He left the Navy to join the American Volunteer Group, famously better known as the Flying Tigers over Burma, and got 6 confirmed kills there. When AVG disbanded, he joined the USAAF, commissioned as a Captain then later to Major. It's also said that he is the only USAAF fighter pilot to have been awarded toe MoH in the European Theater. He later would go on to help coordinate the air cover for the D-Day landings. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_H._Howard

As I recall the Mustang B and C models had 4 guns and a thin wing requiring the guns to be tilted. They routinely jammed in maneuvers. But they fixed it with motors used to lift and hold the belts going up the feed chutes for B-26 bombers, and they put a spring steel guide on that kept the ammo from falling back and twisting. The D model had a different thicker wing and 6 guns, and the problem was solved by then. But the Bs and Cs all required the fix.

Wondered why he flew his plane all the way from Pacific to suddenly be over Europe with B-17S Also what was that narration about how the Bf-109 could out fly a P-51? NO way! Most maneuverable fighter we had, more modern than an old 30's designed 109, and proved that with the 'g's he took with the fast dive. But glad to see the story told, even with a few errors.

P-51 isnt necessarily better than BF-109, BF-109 G series had better engines overall but P-51 got alot of range and altitude. It was designed as bomber escort.

→While the D variants get most of the attention, I think the P-51B and C "razorbacks" are the most beautiful fighter aircraft of their time. To be fair, just about all single-engine fighters from either side in the later years of WWII were beautiful to look at, aerodynamic necessity being the primary influence on their shapes. I imagine no plane was ever more absolutely gorgeous, however, than those P-51 escorts seen from the windows of a B-17 flying over Germany.

Standard AVG tactic when fighting the Japanese Zero (as taught by general Chennault) : climb high, dive through enemy formation, fly away, gain altitude, lather, rinse, repeat.
The Zero could outclimb the P-40 4-to-1... but the P-40 could outdive the zero 2-to-1... I'm certain that experience is what Howard employed here.

I’m not searching through 900 comments to see if someone had mentioned this or not but during the dogfighting scenes there were the unmistakable little black poofs of AA ammunition explosions. They would cease firing the AA artillery once the fighters started to engage. That’s how the bomber crews knew when the fighters were coming… because the flak would stop. Otherwise, I love this channel and the stories you tell. They need to be told and remembered. The men in these stories are heroes. All of them. Some lived, unfortunately a lot died but they will always be the heroes who helped to save the world and made America great.

I was really perplexed by the Japanese rising sun kills on his plane. I did some research and found he also flew with the Flying Tigers in China, so that makes sense now, and WOW kills on both fronts of the war, how in the world this guy got around and survived, one bad-ass, son-of-a-bitch flyer. The sheer bravery, tenacity, reliability, comradeship of these heroes is nothing short of incredibly. Yet most of them would say I was just following my orders or just doing my job. Amazing that some of them survived the war. These young men sacrificed everything to save our future. Up to date in all wars we are still fortunate that young men and women are still prepared to sacrifice everything for the safety of not only their nation but for others as well. May those who sacrificed their lives rest in peace and those who are still with us be blessed by the almighty as we should show our gratitude and highest respect for them all.
