2018 Suzuki Swift Sport (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Swift Sport is exciting enough to make you want to drive it to work, and at the same time sufficiently comfortable, so that driving to work would not be unpleasant. The new Suzuki Swift Sport is just like the old one. You start the engine, put it in gear, and there’s an instant smile on your face. Suzuki may have downsized the Swift Sport engine from 1.6 to 1.4 litre, and power increased by just 4 hp to 140, but as a result the new turbocharged Suzuki Swift Sport is much more usable.
Price as tested: 21 500 euro

    Good review!
I drive the 2017 Swift 1.0 w/ 112 BHP, and must say I get overtaken by a lot of Audis and BMWs (as everyone else, I suppose).
But, when going out of e.g. a roundabout I do like to floor it in 2nd gear and just watch them disappear in the rear mirror, struggling to get their heavy luxury cars out of the roundabout at a decent speed!
And oh yes, here in Denmark I see a lot of elderly people drive Suzukis, especially the Ignis and Swift.
Can't say I'd rather want a Polo or Fiesta over the Swift.

0-100 improved by 0.6 seconds on paper, real test show how conservative is the 0-100 declared by suzuki...
real 0-100 with good launch is around 7.0-7.2

I had a 68 plate one of these for a year. Loved it apart from the driver seat being a bit narrow. Miles better than the earlier version because of the turbo. Would definitely buy another if I was looking for a sporty hatch

Same attitude here, in Romania, against small cars , not necessarily Suzuki, but any small car. Almost everybody consider it's his duty to overtake or tailgate you if you drive a small car. And this is exactly why a car like Swift Sport shines. One can have a loooot of fun ...literally !

@@Commentator541 Yeah, I saw the test and it seems bad. But also keep in mind that NCAP removes stars for not having city braking and lane keep assist. If a driver needs assistance to stay in the lane, they shouldn't be driving. Same thing happened with the Fiat Panda Cross when it was tested after the points changed to favor electronic driving aids.

Hey Marek - in the UK, Suzuki drivers are normally either young [like me] or very old [like pensioners]. That being said, they have a good size following here, I see tuned Swifts on my daily commute sometimes. I love them, really fun to drive, even in the 1.2 trim. They're surprisingly fast too, I regularly beat Golfs, Up's, Fiesta's and others off the line ;)

Lot's of racy young girls favour the Swift around this part of the world [West and South Wales]. Pensioners tend to drive Fords, especially fairly basic Fiesta. Also pensioners have Hyundai and some Honda models, but not the Civic which hardly anyone buys. Oh yes, the Yaris is another coffin-dodger's car.

Once again excellent review and great channel! About the preconceptions (4:10), in my country (Finland) B segment and smaller cars are treated pretty bad on the road -unless your driving habit is very aggressive. I personally owned a Mk2 Citroën C3 few years ago and used it for my daily commuting. But other drivers kept on cutting in front of me from intersections, making stupid passes even if I was already exceeding the speed limit by +20km/h, and especially lorries kept tailgating me, even if I doing 15 to 20km/h above the speed limit. I ran out of patience after someone tried to pass me in single lane roundabout, and traded the C3 into much bigger ride. Which was a bit of shame, since the Mk2 C3 was really good car in its segment back then.

"Code Brown" LOL I couldn't put up with all the beeping of the brake nanny software.
Here in Britain, it's Honda that has the reputation for being a pensioner's car. I have a Honda Jazz and don't drive it slowly, but it does encourage the Audi / BMW / VW brigade to tailgate, even at high speed.

4:10 Here in New Zealand, me anyway, view Suzuki Swifts as Suzuki Slugs, as you're right, people who own them are mostly elderly and drive them like slugs, so I won't hesitate to pull out in front of one. However, I'm 56 and my wife's 60, and recently we upgrade her car to a 2022 Suzuki Swift 'Sport', and when I'm behind the wheel, believe you me, I make it pull like a bus load of school boys... ours is about the swiftest Swift in town!

Looks like a fun car. Out of curiosity, do you think Suzuki's 0-100kph times are accurate? Reviews for the similar engined Vitara S indicate that these figures might be understated... Did the Swift feel quicker than the 8-odd seconds quoted..?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't do timed runs, so I can't relate if it feels like 8 or 7 seconds. I do not have facilities to do it reliably and legally. I heard Japanese manufacturers in general tend to underrate their 0-100kph times, and I have no good explanation for it.

    • @SteveLBMK
      @SteveLBMK 6 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MarekDrives Well, one of the theories I have read, which is so bananas it might even be true, is that it is to keep the insurance groups lower. I remember a reviewer of the Vitara S putting his foot down and being surprised at how fast it shifted. He said that it certainly felt faster than the quoted acceleration anyway. I'm sure it won't be long before someone measures the Swift, will be interesting to see what it comes in at.

Good review! I have the 6 speed automatic in Australia. Strangely, the automatic has automatic engine braking. Stop accelerating, and you can feel it slowing the car down. Same thing when you put your foot on the brake, - it is as though the car has changed down to slow it, except that you do not feel it. But you can hear it. This is very good as it saves wear on the brake pads, and there just isn't any need to use the paddles to slow down. The paddles are virtually instant. You can negate the engine braking by touching the up paddle, - moving it into a higher gear. Using the paddles whilst the car is in "auto" mode allows only 60 seconds in that gear, before the car reverts back to automatic. To hold in that gear, you can change the mode to "manual". Or you can just use the paddles to dive the car like a manual. However the auto gearbox will change the manual mode back to automatic, if you rev the engine too high. And sometimes it will deny the paddle selection if it considers you might damage the gearbox. In other words, the gearbox will always protect the engine and transmission from damage. The engine is an upward re-calibrated Vitara / S-Cross engine.

Also my boss complained about Grand Vitara seats. They make back hurt too fast. So he had to jump to his wife's Jetta for a long trips until he got a Tiguan.
So it means, in this case, a Sport Polo. Boring, but who cares about exciting? ))

Yes and the interior is childish and dated. Suzuki should give up on this line of cars. They are simply outclassed in this segment by VW, Ford and Renault.

I think it's a dealer installed option. May be market specific.
      suzuki.pl/pdf/auto/akcesoria/SWIFT_SWIFTSPORT_akcesoria.pdf
The catalogue is in Polish, but there are some option numbers, which may come in handy.

I had the 2013 Swift Sport, sold it a couple of months ago, good car, wish it had at least 220hp, 136hp is a joke and 6-gears instead of 7-gears. I also think the 2013 version looked much better, more "sporty".

Thank you for insight on your driving habits Marek 😊
Coming to visit Krakow and was warned that Poles drive enthusiastically - cannot wait for it
Here in my country they treat highways like leasureways and you are easily among the fastest with 120 klicks
Same treatment of a "lesser" brands upon overtaking though
I guess that's why Germans know "uberhoel prestige " - overtaking privilege and BMW is making their kidneys arroused rhino size

Believe it or not, we've improved considerably over the last 20 years or so. Now seeing our eastern neighbours driving on Polish roads reminds us, what progress we made, at least in the driving department.
That said, speed limits are an indication, rather than an order to slow down. If you drive 50 in a 50 zone, you're going to get overtaken by cars going almost twice the speed. Adding 20-30 to any speed limit is reasonable for your own safety. No, I can't believe I wrote that either.
If you're going to Cracow, watch out! Drivers in Cracow are real assholes, and they don't stop before pedestrian crossings. Probably fed up with tourists :)

@@MarekDrives glad to hear that about krakow drivers because I will be in a car and where I live you have to stop even if pedestrians just thinks about crossing the street - payback time 😁
Since I love Italian style of driving I hope I will fit right in .
      If I don't I'll need a recommendation for a good body shop 😁

Polish mechanics are very crafty. They can make a Volkswagen Golf out of two bus stop shelters :)

I second that, living in Kraków, often they like to smell my arse when even I'm slightly above the speed limit, but I don't care, I make'm wait ;) also, they love to drive on the left lane, even if the the right lanes are empty... masakra!!

I like the looks of the Swift vs alot of the hot hatches and subcompacts on the market in the u.s. I wish their engines were more like their motorcycles, revvs like it has to piss. The only problem with that is, most casual drivers don't like to rev.
