      Many years ago I was in Ixtapa (next door to Zihuatanejo) and this real nice guy local was trying to set us up with various activities. I had a T-shirt that changed colors when hot. The shirt clearly belonged ti him, I was just the guy who brought it to its rightful owner.
      I give it to him, he put it on and I put my hand on his belly. He thought that was odd until I took my hand away and he could see how the shirt showed my hand print.
      I saw him later wearing that shirt. Best memory of that trip.
      Thanks for this episode for helping me remember that.

      Our original bank was 6 Trojan T105 batteries @ 62 lbs/each = 372 lbs. Our new and improved bank has 8 Battle Born LiFePO4 @ 31 lbs/ea = 248 lbs. We can still add 4 more batteries to our system before it becomes heavier. We are still an ultra conscience weight sensitive boat. We firmly believe that keeping any multihull light is the safe, efficient and responsible thing to do.

    Nice that you were able to make a deal with battery co and flex solar panel co. Not everyone can do this. A RV Ytuber recently switched out his 3 same co bats (300 ah total) for 16 280ah cells - 4 cells in series to make 4 12v bats (1120ah total) in just 33% more space. He was fine with the old bats, just wanted more power and had limited space. Flex panels a good idea when you run out of aft space. I do think bifacials would work on davits and give more power from reflected light, but they do weigh more.
    Your location was the final destination in Shawshank Redemption movie, however the final beach shot was actually done on Sandy Point on St Croix.

      We lift our dinghy 2-3 times everyday and never leave it in the water overnight. More for growth then theft. It is very rare to have your dinghy stolen in Mexico, not to say that it doesn't happen, but we don't worry about it too much. Yes, we do keep an eye on it, and usually give a few pesos to an entrepreneurial local who will watch it and always help launch it afterwards.

    I always wonder, is Emma obsessed with eye makeup, or are her eyes really just that pretty? ...I'm beginning to think it's the later, 'cause I've noticed over the last many episodes, her eyes always look so impossibly perfect. ...that, or she refuses to be filmed without her makeup on.

      That is her natural eyes. No makeup needed. She obviously takes after me (Teal). Lol

    I noticed that every battery has a different length of wiring, but the sum of the length of the positive and negative wires seems constant. Is that common practice?

    • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All of the batteries have the same length of cable. We paid great attention to make sure that each cable is within a 1/4" tolerance within the bank itself. The cables that enter and exit the bank do have different lengths.

    Question for you: I see you only sail coastal so do you have any plans to go to somewhere like Australia or Fiji or is Basik not a blue water boat?
    By the way Great videos

      @OnboardLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lol, we do get excited over the littlest things. As for more Bluewater sailing. That is still in our plans. We decided to go a different route right now because Australia, Fiji and New Zealand are some of the reasons behind our change of course. The pet restrictions/costs are just not something we can afford as well as the trauma a quarantine would inflict on Compass. We had a family meeting on maybe having my sister take care of Compass so we can do the Pacific crossing and it was unanimous that we couldn't bear to send Compass away just because it wasn't convenient for our travels. We are a family unit.

      Great stuff with looking out for Compass 👍 the only reason I asked is because Im a New Zealander and it would be good to see you sail over into the southern hemisphere.

    I always suggest that people do not Daisy chain there batteries. All the loads go through each battery when doing it Daisy chain way. Right now you have 6 batteries and will have 8. I would have 4 battery packs ( 2 batteries pos to pos and neg to neg) then connect the 4 to a busbar for positive and negative. What this does is lower the amount of current that goes through each battery. That causes less heat loss and doesn't stress your batteries cells as much so they last longer. See daisy chaining makes your 6 batteries act like 1 battery pack which raises the C rating of charge and discharge. Even with the 6 I would have had 3 packs of 2 and with the new 4 packs of 2. You are already paying way to much for Battleborn Batteries so make them last as long as they can. I have 4 battery banks at my house and when my inverters ask for 10kw of power from them each bank provides 2500 watts so 1/4 the load. That means my 280ah cells are discharging at .21C. Your Cells are 100ah in your batteries. so 1280 watts is 1C. so if you need 2500 watts your battery on the end is giving 2C in Daisy chain method. With bus bars and 3 packs it would be .66C and with new setup .5C with 4 packs. Or if you kept each battery separate and to a busbar than .25C which is better yet. Lithium breaks down when stressed as does anything. So only using 90% of capacity and not going over .5C charge/discharge will prolong the life. My cells can last 3000 cycles at 100% discharge/charge at 1C. 6000 cycles at 90% discharge, at .8000 cycles at 80% discharge/charge even with .5C but mine never go over .21C. So at 8000cycles I still have at least 80% of my capacity to use for another well I think these batteries will out last me and I am 55. They are rated for 21 years. But that is 6000 cycles.

    Teal why didn’t you just stack them on top of the other 2 with a cheesy custom rack. I never thought I’d see you erode the structural integrity of Basik. Seats, benches and bulkheads are a very big deal in structural integrity.

    • @OnboardLifestyle
      @OnboardLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not enough room to stack the batteries in the compartment. The 1/4" thick panel that we cut away had zero structural value to basik. The superstructure of basik is constructed with Nidacore, a polypropylene honeycomb composite. By design, the exoskeleton is strong enough to support minor cosmetic adjustments with no problems at all. She is now 30 years old and showing zero signs of structural degradation.

    • @thereissomecoolstuff
      @thereissomecoolstuff ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OnboardLifestyle sounds good. I have started to see some ocean traveling cats start to have structural issues from very simple modifications. They are much larger than Basik. She is pretty compact.
