The original Crow movie and comic are about a heartbroken man who is a massive 80s/90s Goth rocker. Not exactly your standard action hero, but nonetheless, he is cold, scary and badass, and strikes fear into the hearts of those who wronged him. The new guy is a whiny little emo soundcloud rapper who cries all the time and looks like he's dressed as Jared Leto's joker. What a difference. Not to mention the original had strong anti-drug messaging, with Eric being strongly anti-drugs in the entire movie, unlike the new one, where the main characters are junkies.

I was pleasantly surprised at how Brandon Lee was able to balance the emotional man mourning his lover and also the revenge filled immortal hell bent on killing the people that wronged him and Shelley. But also there’s SO much humor to Eric in the original. There’s so many moments where Brandon had me chuckling because he has these little lines he does that just….they HUMANIZE him so well. His and Albrechtt’s conversation in the apartment is probably my favorite scene of the film because you kinda get to see a bit of what Eric was like before he died. I’m not sure why they felt the need to show more of Shelley and Eric’s time together. It really is a plot device but also her death is the driving force for Eric’s revenge. It’s his own death he’s avenging as well but Shelley really is his driving force (and a little bit of Sarah as well). You don’t really NEED more than knowing two young people in love were unjustly murdered (and in Shelley’s case brutally r*ped as well, so add that to the horror she had to go through) and one of them comes back from the grave the avenge their deaths. WHY is Shelley in hell in the new one??? That….that doesn’t seem to be what happened in the original, I was under the impression she went to heaven. Is it cuz the baddie sends souls to hell when he drains their life force??? I guess if he made a deal with the devil that makes sense but still dumb. Also, I’d like to point out, Eric’s revenge ends when he kills Skank. Right, like he goes to the board room tells everyone he’s only there for Skank but Top Dollar is like “nah I’m not giving him over” and then eric proceeds to kill anyone who gets in his way. BUT after he killed skank he went back to the graveyard to die. My point being this Vincent guy is a stand-in for Top Dollar and while TD WAS the baddie the only reason Eric went after him and Myca at the end is because they kidnapped Sarah. If they hadn’t done that eric would have just….died. Like, his revenge was over with the crew that killed him and Shelley. Which surprised me, maybe it’s my own morals saying I wouldn’t let the crime lord continue to run amok, but to eric, his personal revenge was all that mattered. Only reason he goes after them is because of Sarah. So having this other guy being like “ah you have to take out Vincent he’s evil” makes this LESS about eric’s personal revenge story and turns him into a generic superhero??? Or a generic vigilante?? He’s a vigilante in the original but it really is just his own personal revenge he’s after. Not necessarily the greater good. Edit: ok I guess she’s in hell because she kills someone?? Also, meant to say this, WHY is his immortality determined by love??? That is so stupid. They really did complicate this for nothing. Crow is your connection to the human world, if it gets injured then so do you. Like……what. And it’s implied that based on myth since Myca was AWARE that the crow being a sort of spirit guardian thing and that’s how she knew to attack the crow to hurt Eric.
So glad you watched the original. You’ve managed better than most people to explain some of the reasons as to why the original is a masterpiece and why this remake is trash. Thanks
We can't have strong, masculine heroes anymore. Especially if they're straight, white and male. They have to be crybabies high on soy and simping for their obnoxious girlbosses.
I get that bills have to be paid but why these actors don't just say no is beyond my understanding. Bill's got the look and the acting chops (and the fans) to be picky. Plus - why participate in destroying a classic.
Eric and Shelly in the original were 2 good people. These new two are just a bunch of druggies who went on a lust filled drug bender. Clearly the writers know nothing about true love or being a good person
And it seems they only knew each other for a week or something. In the original, Eric had been with Shelly for.some time and if I remember, they were planning for marriage
Then you don't get Hollywood. Diversity is just a spice they sprinkle over their stuff because their core demographic like it. Their core demographic being women and girls. That's Hollywood's self imposed main target nowadays, no matter the genre. This is why this movie looks like a CW show. P.S. the supreme irony of all this is that a lot of girls already liked the original
If you search her name (FKA Twigs) on Google, one of the recommended "People also ask..." questions is: "What gender is FKA Twigs?" Which leads to a blog post on The Women's Network that talks about how she's an Afro Latina woman who "owns her sexuality in subversive ways" but not as a "spectacle for the male gaze." 😏
This movie makes me incredibly angry, but it's gonna take time to understand way. A reminder to anyone that hasn't read the original comics: James O' Barr, the artist/writer of The Crow, based the grief Eric felt over losing his girlfriend Shelly on the same grief he felt when his own fiancee was murdered at the hands of a drunk driver, and the rage he felt for wanting to bring justice to those responsible. In the comic, Erick's dialogues with Shelly are based almost one-for-one on actual conversations O' Barr had with his own fiancee. The book took seven years for O' Barr to complete, because working on the book meant having to revisit the trauma of losing her. So imagine what it must be like for some soulless corporation to see the culmination of your grief and personal agony as nothing more than an overly-edgy story about a whining shriveled emo git whimpering about his dead girlfriend, while spending little time examining the Eric's mental state and the rage and anger he felt against the people that took her life. It's almost insulting when you think about it. I feel like the movie should have been written alongside O' Barr, since much of Eric's grief is his grief. That would have lent to better understanding for Eric as a character and improve the narrative. I also hate that Kronos replaces The Crow spirit as Eric's guide. Some of the most memorable scenes in the comic come from Eric's conversations with the Crow, who's not so much a spirit as its a blight on Eric, as it revives him from death, but instills him with overwhelming grief that prevents him from dying. I just hate that they replace the Crow (you know, the character's namesake) with some random dude with a generic name like Kronos. There's just small things, too. Like I hate that Shelly is raceswapped when she's literally based on O' Barr's dead financee. I hate that there's some supernatural enemy instead of Eric taking revenge on his girlfriend's murderers. The actor playing him doesn't exude any kind of fear like he did in the comics and keeps getting his ass kicked. None of the amazing imagery is in the film, like the white horse getting caught in barbwire. There's nothing likable about this movie. 2024 The Crow really just comes off as a generic film, and it's such a waste. Brandon Lee's gone, and this movie proved that no one could replace his brief performance. It makes me miss the dude; he had so much potential before his passing. But instead of a badass, we get the dude who gets shot in the head at the end of John Wick 4. It's a disgrace. What a wasted script.
Damn, I gotta say I never watched the crow. However based on your description of its background and what both the artist and Brandon went through making their renditions. I will be watching the movie and probably buying the comic. Thank you.
He was far smarter than the Pawn shop guy who didn't see what was coming from like 10 years in advance. Watching him like really you do not see what's about to happen? No? OK well...
The part where the guy says, "It's crowing time!" Before crowing all over the place was the best piece of cinema I have ever seen. Literally put me to tears.
Jesus Christ why is the plot so needlessly overcomplicated? In the original, Shelly's and Eric's deaths were random, a brutal unexpected end to a happy relationship. Making it some crazy mob conspiracy completely misses the point.
Thank you for bringing up Nora Freeze. They absolutely nailed Mr. Freeze, and of course because of Harley was in a relationship with the Joker almost killed Nora. So Mr. Freeze not wanting to sacrifice anyone else killed himself, just so Nora could party like a frat girl.
The romance felt beyond forced, and you could tell they really tried hard to make the audience care, as they spent almost an hour on it which was ridiculous and laughable considering that within the story they only knew each other for like a few days in rehab, and yet he acts like they were in-love for years. The main reason for this was because both Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs (who should never act in a movie ever again) were devoid of any natural chemistry whatsoever. It's amazing how in the 1994 original they only put emphasis on Eric and Shelly's relationship for about three scenes, and yet you could feel the emotion and natural connection between both characters a lot stronger compared to the remake. Actual good actors, script writing, and good directors make a difference.
@@occultnightingale1106 The thing is, it's honestly difficult to pick the worst of those three. They're so bad its impossible to pick a winner, they're all "0".
The only way this movie could've possibly insulted the original further, being released upon the anniversary when the original's main actor died, and dedicated this whole movie for him!
Ugh, I had almost forgotten about DmC. I actually used to listen to the Crow soundtrack when I played the demo for the original Devil May Cry that came with Code Veronica. Not that they particularly "sync up" or anything, but it's very fitting.
@@SlavicHavoc even the hair is the same as reboot Dante. So glad they went back to the original formula for DMC5, instead of doing a sequel to the reboot. The Crow 94 soundtrack was amazing 👍
There have been many attempts at expanding on the Crow story in film that have failed over the years, some of them with legitimately fascinating ideas.... killed because studio heads refused to take the gamble and just wanted generic action or horror. This really is an IP with a hell of a lot of potential.... that nobody on the money side has the balls to support. Which is why all the spinoffs have wound up either dreadful trainwrecks or watered down cash grabs....
at this point, I would rather that James O'Barr asked a Japanese studio to make an adapation of "The Crow" (I mean DC and WB do that a lot lately) An animated movie (or show) more faithful to the original comic, made by a Japanese animation studio (maybe 'Madhouse'), would a million times better than anything Hollywood produces nowadays
They attempted it with a theatrical sequel, which was lambasted by both audiences and critics, and further installments that went direct-to-video. There was also a short-lived TV series.
This looked TERRIBLE from the first teaser trailers, and we all know it really is now. More Hollyweird purposely shitting on & destroying any male hero they can think of. They must LOVE losing millions of dollars.
@@ouchiegiverjr and they black washed Shelly who isn't even black in the comics. now you might not care about that. But I'm just saying their is a pattern of this. And it would be like making the black panther a white guy. No one would like that even though their is white people in Africa. It's ridiculous.
Good GOD that's beyond cringe.... but, maybe we need mandatory restraining orders against these horrible writers so they NEVER go near the entertainment industry AGAIN!
Another reason why this movie failed and sucked in the first place is because of the director, Rupert Sanders is a horrible director and his only claim to fame was having an affair with Kirsten Stewart (which I liked your Twilight joke)!!! People still haven't forgiven him for having the affair, he got divorced and this is his first movie in like 10-years. This is his first movie in 7-years and it absolutely tanked. I think it's save to say that his career is offically over!!!🖤
Im genuinely curious, I cant think of a single "remake" made for the illusive "modern audience" in the past 10 years that wasn't complete trash. Can you? You'd think the mess up and make a hit. Gotta be money laundering involved in these films.
The products have become garbage yet their budgets have EXPLODED, taking HUGE financial losses without even blinking. I know there are true believers and ideologs involved but damn after losing about a billion dollars you'd think you'd rethink your strategy.
Call me crazy but I can't help but think those people sending billions and billions of dollars of our money to vouge dancers overseas are finding a great way to clean the money.
I mean IT managed to be a good time, so did Dune. But then again, are those remakes or readaptations of the source material. Remakes as a whole havent been good since the 80s.
IKR, such a simple revenge story and they just added all this weird af shit to it. Instead of it just being a couple looking forward to their wedding, they're now drug addicts and the love interest is a murderer? Why? It's so stupid.
What I've been saying... Maybe expand on a thing or two like Sarah... She seemed like a Adoptive daughter. Maybe show what's he's going through while on borrowed time? The ending too The Crows weakness isn't a bird... there are fates worse than death. I get why in the 90s you might think your only option is to allow for him to become mortal.... but maybe you shouldn't? I think it'd be better if you didn't.
9:50 Just marking the George R.R. Martin quote about how screen writer make other people's work their own. And here it is in text form: "There's a few phrases in Hollywood that you want the screenwriter to feel he's free to make it his own. And too many screenwriters do make it their own, even if they are adapting Dickens or Tolkien or Shakespeare or whoever you want. They decide to make it their own. But they never make it better. Because usually, the people who are making their own are simply not as good as the people who wrote it in the first place."

Don't forget that in the remake, the the antagonist sold.gis soul.to.satan and murders innocents as a sacrifice, so their souls would go to hell.
So glad you watched the original. You’ve managed better than most people to explain some of the reasons as to why the original is a masterpiece and why this remake is trash. Thanks
Had no idea this was even a thing. I saw the original in the theater back in 94 or so. What an amazing movie to see in the cinema.

The Crow 2024 - celebrating a soy boy and enjoyed by no one.
Even more 'black goo' propaganda 🤔
with how much of a humiliation ritual this is
they arent even celebrating him
We can't have strong, masculine heroes anymore. Especially if they're straight, white and male. They have to be crybabies high on soy and simping for their obnoxious girlbosses.
I enjoyed it and so did quite a few others according to Rotten Tomatoes.
It's Hollywood's agenda. To feminize all male led movies from the last 40 years. Critical drinker points it out all the time.
The fact that they wastes a good actor like Bill on a role like this, is ridiculous.
I get that bills have to be paid but why these actors don't just say no is beyond my understanding. Bill's got the look and the acting chops (and the fans) to be picky. Plus - why participate in destroying a classic.
Wait, a male main character got bastardized and sidelined for a female character? NO WAY!
WAY!
I am shocked, SHOCKED, well not that shocked.
Dear Brandon, every attempt to remake your classic shows how unique and special your Crow movie will always be to us.....
Wow, he gets his power from love, that deserved the entire puke scene from Team America.
Oh!! You do not Love the Murderous Whre!!? But she has the love to give and will always give it to all!!!
The original was also an anti-drug movie, making them junkies just makes no sense.
Exactly
So you didn’t watch the movie, check.

If you search her name (FKA Twigs) on Google, one of the recommended "People also ask..." questions is: "What gender is FKA Twigs?"
Which leads to a blog post on The Women's Network that talks about how she's an Afro Latina woman who "owns her sexuality in subversive ways" but not as a "spectacle for the male gaze." 😏
In the last freaking 20 minutes he becomes the crow are you kidding me I would want my money back even though I'm not going to watch this
This movie makes me incredibly angry, but it's gonna take time to understand way.
Thank you.
I loved the bad guys in the original. Much more fleshed out and uniquely weird than standard goons. Out of respect to Skank I'm skipping this one.

The part where the guy says, "It's crowing time!" Before crowing all over the place was the best piece of cinema I have ever seen. Literally put me to tears.
Same energy fr
I was pumped when The Crow quipped "Eat crow!" before taking down a bad guy. Awesome!
We are still doing the unoriginal Morbius comments? Yikes

Just make another Constantine or Spawn movie. It's basically the same thing.
I remember when Jason Momoa was supposed to be the lead, for the Crow Remake before this pile of crap.
Which is why all the spinoffs have wound up either dreadful trainwrecks or watered down cash grabs....
at this point, I would rather that James O'Barr asked a Japanese studio to make an adapation of "The Crow" (I mean DC and WB do that a lot lately)
An animated movie (or show) more faithful to the original comic, made by a Japanese animation studio (maybe 'Madhouse'), would a million times better than anything Hollywood produces nowadays
They attempted it with a theatrical sequel, which was lambasted by both audiences and critics, and further installments that went direct-to-video. There was also a short-lived TV series.
The crow refers to the booger in black shelly's nose

Im genuinely curious, I cant think of a single "remake" made for the illusive "modern audience" in the past 10 years that wasn't complete trash. Can you? You'd think the mess up and make a hit. Gotta be money laundering involved in these films.
The products have become garbage yet their budgets have EXPLODED, taking HUGE financial losses without even blinking. I know there are true believers and ideologs involved but damn after losing about a billion dollars you'd think you'd rethink your strategy.

And too many screenwriters do make it their own, even if they are adapting Dickens or Tolkien or Shakespeare or whoever you want. They decide to make it their own. But they never make it better.
