Just the sound speaks quality!! The build parts also show the quality. I can imagine it feels as such, when holding. Thank you for the reworking video!
Hi Dennis, "Excellence" in both instruction and performance !! Especially liked the initial look inside the case, the dual eccentric springs set up and the multiple functioning bearings. Top Shelf ! Many Thanks, Cons
545 eccentric snaps from free spool to retrieve and back except when in retrieve and under some tension like a heavy sinker hanging pre cast position. Then the eccentric handle is soft and doesn’t want to flip to the free spool. When tension is removed it flips back and forth no problem. I took it apart multiple times and spring seems correct imbedded in side plate
Hmmm. - that gauge line are you using and what amount of weight is on the line when fishing? If it is heavy. that could be causing the issue, given that all of the mechanical parts are OK.
The 5xx GS series are great. The newer production units seem to have a star adjuster with the spiral arms whereas I believe the older ones had straight arms. Picked up a “broken” one on eBay which turned out to be perfectly fine except someone had reassembled with the eccentric stud not aligned with the slot in the jack plate. Jackpot!
What a beautiful and extraordinary reel Dennis. It sort of reminds me of a Newell. I wish I had the eyes and the boat to use a reel like this. LOL Great video! - Chris. (PS. Keep looking for a Daiwa 8100 or 8100A so I can complete my set thanks for the help.)
Got 2nd 545 and it needed drag washers. Kit came with 3 large washers and one smaller one. Where does the smaller one go? There was only 3 larger ones on reel originally and on schematic. Thx as always.
Sorry to keep bothering you. The one on the reel was smooth the new one provided was carbontex drag material. I left old one on. Will replacing it with carbontex material new one increase or effect drag?
There is no change to max drag if you replace the original washers with Carbontex. Max drag is a function of surface area and that does not increase or decrease with a. change out. Carbontex will resist wear and tear and that is the advantage. They are also thinner, so in some reels, you can add an additional washer and metal and that will increase max drag because the surface are will increase. - Dennis
Hi Dennis. Great video. Love these reels. Just purchased a 555. Noted it had no brake blocks. Can they be replaced as I see the shaft it fits on is stepped to keep the blocks in place?
I finally bought one of these reels. I have a question about the brake blocks. Should they be positioned in center of the shafts they rest on as shown with this reel for max breaking or out towards the end tips of the shafts?
What size spool? Is it compatible with other Penn reels? Is a replacement spool available? Obviously, not quite a quick release like a Jigmaster. And finally, what year is this reel approximately?
One thing to watch with spare spools on these: you saw how the roller bearings were still on the spool when he removed it from the housing. Make sure to transfer these onto the spare spool when swapping. Otherwise the spool might appear to spin smoothly after reassembly except that once there is tension on the line you’ll suddenly realize you forgot to replace the bearing.

My pleasure! This is a great reel

Have 2-555,2-545,1-535 all same set up. 40 lb. mono-8 oz. sinkers. Only one reel has this issue.

Sounds like a winner.
great reels ! I have 3 sizes ❤
These are one of the best series of reels that Penn made
Beautiful Penn! I do not own any of this series. Great video!
Thanks for watching! If you have the need and the opportunity, they truly are nice reels - Dennis

It is Chris.
hi dennis i have about 10 of these reels my best one is the 535gs mag the only thing i would complain about this series is the cross bars
Yes - they are very reliable reels. What is the issue with the crossbars?
They tend to tarnish really quickly whereas the rest of the reel might still look really new.
Thanks

The small washer goes under the main gear. The others go inside it. - Dennis

The max on the brakes is with them fully extended.
Hi Dennis - any recommendations for removing a pinion gear that seems to have rusted onto the spool shaft? Thanks in advance!
Yes - watch this video. It is on a similar reel and the process can be used to fix your reel - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackleWhich video should I watch - you didn’t specify.

@@2ndChanceTackleThanks , Dennis - I’ll give it a look!

Got a 535 class rough ground reel it could pull the plug out the sea as usual another class and very informative video Dennis 👍
Replacement spool is available from Mystic Parts for approx $36.
