SpongeBob is definitely one of the most meme-able cartoons of all time, but I also feel that the show tapped into the mindset of being a millenial in a way other shows haven't. In Mr. Enter's "Camp Coral" discussion, he explained how anyone could relate to SpongeBob because he has both adult and kid traits. He has a job and lives on his own, but he also goes to school and enjoys bubbles, play-acting/imagining (see"Idiot Box" or "Sand Castles in the Sand"), and jelly fishing (the undersea equivalent of catching butterflies). Millinials are the first generation who have trouble moving out of their parent's houses, and they're the first generation who want to acknowledge their child-like interests. Thus, it make sense how they relate to the childlike SpongeBob. At the same time, however, millenials grew up in a steadily uncertain world with fewer opportunities than their parents, and the idea of working in a Krusty Krab-like business (unfulfilling hard work, low pay) is relatable even for people with college degrees. Thus, they can also relate to the pessimistic Squidward who tries to conform to how an "adult" should act while at the same time secretly desiring to enjoy childlike interests (see "Squidville"). Suqidward's artistic hobbies are an indication that he has an unconventional side that is dying to get out, but he keeps telling himself that being an adult means being serious and "boring." In good SpongeBob episodes, Squidward acts offended by Spongebob and Patrick's childlike behavior because it represents what he both wants and fears: the ability to view the world in a childlike way. The "Idiot Box" episode demonstrates this idea perfectly. In the SpongeBob musical, Squidward claims that "The world is a horrible place filled with fear, suffering and despair…. also dashed hopes, shattered dreams, broken promises and abject misery,” and what was the world like from 1999 (The year SpongeBob premiered) onward? In America alone, there was the terrorist attacks on September 11th, the war in Iraq, the demonization of Middle Easterners/Muslim Americans, a recession from 2007-2009, the shooting of unarmed black men, the disastrous 2016 election, the demonization of Hispanic Americans, and a continual trend of corrupt, wealthy people committing immoral actions and getting off scott-free (Hello, Mr. Krabs! Looks like you're in good commpany!). Yeah, I have a hard time disagreeing with Squidward. The real world and the world of Bikini Bottom have more similarities than we like to admit, but SpongeBob (when he's written correctly) represents the part of us that wants to embrace idealism and wants to see a happier, more harmonious world. So deep down, we root for SpongeBob and want to see him proven right.
Honestly, I dig Season 1’s slower pace. It’s a lot more chill and atmospheric, while still having a lot of great jokes. I really like the cel-animation too. Before more recent episodes, season 1 was probably the most expressive you’d see these characters.
Definitely! I also love how everyone's just very chill in it. It may be because the voice actors were just getting started, but everyone goes for much more down to Earth acting during most of the scenes, which makes the moments that they do freak out even more funny. If there's an adult that somehow hasn't seen any episodes of Spongebob I would probably show them some season 1 episodes first just because they are the easiest for me to go back to since people just aren't as loud (I do have hearing loss to be fair)
Well... Maybe the start of the first Season is slow paced However the ending of this season Sleepy Time Arrgh! Valentine’s Day Karate Choppers The Paper SB-129 Hooky Suds Neptune’s Spatula Fools in April Texas Is anything but slow paced
Don't get me wrong. I like Season 1 of SpongeBob and the cel animation is awesome, but I agree with MrEnter on this one. In fact, almost always Season 1 of a tv show starts off really slow and by the time Season 2 of a show starts it just defeats Season 1 because they improve on it and figured out what worked and what direction they wanted to go for with it's tone, and I really don't get that from Season 1 of SpongeBob. I'm looking at it as a more objective point.
This was the show that made Nickelodeon break their own rule of having a limited size compared to Disney so they would feel like a company run by kids rather than just a corporation.
Spongebob used to be such a big part of my life- my brother and I watched the season 1 and 2 DVDs, had a bunch of Spongebob toys, caught new episodes as they were airing...I even had a crush on Spongebob at one point and kissed "his" cheek when I went to the Nick Hotel for my tenth birthday (which was nearly ten years ago...it's surreal). At some point, I wasn't as diligent about catching episodes and I stopped watching it on television around season 8 or early season 9. After that point, Pieguyrulz and Mr. Enter's reviews about Spongebob became a part of my adolescence. In fact, I found Mr. Enter through a collab with Pieguyrulz and haven't stopped watching him since. Even though I don't really watch Spongebob anymore (I've seen a handful of new episodes over the years, but I've mainly just heard about the show through TH-cam reviews), it'll always be dear to me and it has impacted me in more ways than I could even imagine.
It's 'going strong' in that it still pushes merch and gets kids attention-- but I actually wonder how many kids *watch* the show itself, or why they'd want to when so much of the humor and animation now dives into Ren & Stimpy territory or body horror.
"Sorry about the scabies" As an adult I find that incredibly funny. If a cake shop sells those on the regular either Bikini Bottom has an infestation or the fish don't buy enough "gloves."
See, that's interesting because for me I feel the opposite. I see that and it kind of disgusts me. From S4 onwards the show seemed to undergo a tonal shift where it went from "light juvenile humor written by clever people, with a few jokes for adults" to "written for edgy teens and adults specifically, where a joke only makes sense to the adult because it's a gross thing a child wouldn't know anything about. It's hard to describe but there is a subtle-yet-distinct difference, between a joke an adult can get that a child wouldn't because it's sophisticated (ie, "Tou-louse-Lautrec, badumtsh") and a joke only the adult gets because it's gross/fucked up. The show started leaning heavily toward the latter.
To put it a blunter and shorter way, if I had kids in modern day, I would feel obligated to screen which episodes of this show they watch due to the rampant body horror and grossout centric episodes.
According to Casey Alexander's Twitter feed, the scabies joke was based on his experience with it at the age of 10. "I'm allowed to make the scabies joke 'cause it comes from personal experience. My 10 year old self was delighted w/ that one." twitter.com/_dolza_/status/468266196438384640
@dayzgone Rocko's Modern Life didn't have jokes like that that are intended to be funny just because they are disgusting. It was more tasteful than that. To be clear though I'm not that bothered if it did have an explanation as linked above. It's not really what I think of when I'm talking about "tasteless", that would be more like Spongebob falling in love with a rotting sandwich or the disgusting boulder of chewing gum episode.
@Stix N' Stones I'm not uncomfortable with people liking the new episodes. You can like them if you want to, that's your right, just as it is my right not to understand the appeal you see in it.
marianne mccrank When you think of things like that, is there any wonder why they won’t let Spongebob die? They’d likely go into financial trouble without Spongebob at this point.
I don't entirely agree with what you said about season 1. Yes, it's slower and more lowkey, but that doesn't equate to "not ageing well." Also I really like the duller colors of season 1. This season also felt more atmosphereic and seemed to emphasize the underwater feel more. I agree that season 2 and 3 (and maybe even 4) are better, but I still think the first season is pretty great.
When Spongebob does a bad episode, it's *memorably* bad. When other shows bar FOP do, it's just dull. Also, I think I can see why people love it: at its core, it's about an eternally optimistic guy who loves his job and hanging with his friends--except it's a sponge. Somehow, the idea just works.
personally i just feel nothing from any seasons after S3. i can barely sit through a single modern spongebob. the humor constantly feels cringey or out of place in the show. the soul just seems gone.
Even most of Fairly OddParents failures are just boring or annoying. SpongeBob goes so far beyond. SpongeBob at its worst is as remarkable as the show at its best. These episodes - The Thing, SpongeHenge, The Splinter, Fungus Among Us, Waiting, A Pal for Gary, One Coarse Meal, Pet Sitter Pat, Are You Happy Now, Ink Lemonade - they aren't just disliked, they are hated to the point of infamy. People hate them as much as they love Pizza Delivery or Band Geeks. You can *name* specific bad episodes of FOP, but you don't have specific examples like those that stick in your brain, that haunt you for years after you see them. Other shows don't have the "11 Minute suicide joke" episode or such a SELECTION of episodes that exist simply to torture a single character. Simpsons, FOP, Family Guy - they're all just corporate shells. SpongeBob at its worst is so much more than that.
Mr Enter's favorite SpongeBob season is Season 11? Never expected to hear that! And Am I happy about that! 😊 SpongeBob is my favorite Nicktoon of all time, due to the funny characters and silly stories. Thank you, Stephen Hillenburg!
I think EmpororLemon went into this in detail, but in summary: The reason that Spongebob gets so much longjevity because of Squidward. When Spongebob provides the kids' perspective on the universe of bikini bottom, Squidward provides the adult perspective so everyone has something to watch.
I'm actually genuinely surprised that you called season 11 your favorite season of the series. Personally the post sequel era is my favorite era of the entire show just because it has so many Kick-Ass episodes. The sewers of Bikini Bottom, two thumbs down, mimic Madness, feral friends, Plankton paranoia, Karen's virus, broken alarm, SpongeBob in randomland, and so many more. Thank you Steve Hillenburg and crew.
THANK YOU for finally giving the show's 4th and 5th seasons the praise they deserve. Yes there are bad episodes, but the good ones are every bit as good as the pre-movie ones.
Have you ever noticed how Nicktoons characters, especially the earlier ones, live in the coolest or most unique places? Arnold's bedroom, Catdog's split house, Angry Beaver's dam, the Thornberry's RV, Spongebob's pineapple, the list goes on and on...
Honestly, I don't care how bad the later seasons are. This is still one of my favorite cartoons of all time. I have too many memories of it to let the bad stuff ruin it for me.
I think it resonating across generations was largely to how timeless the show felt, it never seemed to jump onto the "modern" culture bandwagon of selfies and cringe worthy outdated memes, not that I know of anyway as i've not watched every episode to ever exist.
Give Spongebob this: At least it's managed to recover from seasonal rot, unlike Family Guy and The Simpsons. Even being 20 years old; how many other shows (even counting live action) have accomplished that?
I think part of what made Spongebob such a cultural phenomenon was just how damn quotable the show was. Like it came out during that time when me and my friends were "too old" for cartoons, especially during that era where it was less...acceptable for anyone over the age of 12 to enjoy watching cartoons. Still, we all watched it and quoted it constantly. The show had so many memorable witty and funny one liners.
This video has made me realize that I haven't seen any episode of spongebob beyond season 3 and the two movies. Guess I'll check out season 11. I think season 1 is the preetiest season of the show and I still remember watching the commercial for spongebob, "the new show coming out to join the Nicktoon family" or something like that. Maybe its heavy marketing and the fact it kept going after all the other shows ended is what made it so memorable for everyone.
Check out some of Season 4's best episodes, The Lost Mattress, Dunces and Dragons, Skill Crane, Krusty Towers, Fear of a Krabby Patty, and Shell of a Man.
A winding retrospective on one of the most famous and infamous cartoons out there. I think your perspective in this review is probably the most fresh of any Spongebob analysis I’ve seen in a while. Coming from you who has both praised and maligned the series, with some of your most infamous videos being reviews of certain episodes, the more holistic, balanced outlook on the series presented in this video was pretty interesting.
I disagree of what you think of the show overall, since I think this show is certainly the best Nicktoon of them all, but I do agree that season 11 is a kickass season.
There once was a show About a sponge with filled with holes And grandma's kisses on his forehead When the show is good, it's very very good But when the show is bad, it's horrid
Okay, so funny story, true story: When I was a kid, my class was once visited by an artist who specialized in illustrating children's books and after he read us one of his books and described his line of work, he took questions. "Band Geeks" quickly popped into my mind and I raised my hand and asked "Is mayonnaise a drawing tool?" Everyone laughed and the artist said "Um...I don't think so but I wouldn't recommend it." It was the highlight of my day that day XD
As someone who grew up with the sponge, I believe the show's cultural impact stems from a few things - It's a show for both kids and adults; it's not just a kids show with some adult humor and concepts throw in, there are episodes that touch on adult-themed topics like Mid-Life Crustacean and Squid on Strike that kids could follow okay, but really connect with when they get older. -The characters all essentially being adults, but still having that child-like charm, which set it apart from other cartoon shows that had kid protagonists and the subsequent world was depicted through their eyes. - The world of the show is very well defined. It's not quite as in-depth as a show like Avatar, but there are memorable locations like the Krusty Krab, Goo Lagoon and Jellyfish Fields, that can serve as a setting for an episode, but also connect with the rest of world and the characters, making them feel like they serve a purpose outside of the show itself. It's similar to the town of Springfield from The Simpsons, where the streets, hubs, stores, schools etc. are established so well, you can imagine yourself being there. - The show can do whatever it wants, which lead to its bad episodes and seasons, but it's one of the shows that can do it. It's not bound by an overarching plot or any limitations other shows have when constructing its episodes, so there's more range to try new things, and everybody has at least one episode they either relate to, like or at least remember. The show may of had a few problems, but being formulaic wasn't one of them. - The show's somewhat loose structure and concept made it great for adapting to books, video games, movies etc. which could explain its internet population. It's obviously not the only show to do so, but, again, it's lack of restrictions in terms of story and premise allowed these mediums to develop their own concepts, and some are just as memorable as the show itself.
You know I've never heard of this obscure cult classic, I'm glad you've made a review to tell me the ups and downs and Golden age of this show that while unknown is still surprisingly going on today despite it's obscurity maybe I'll watch it someday with many other new viewers to see what the hype is all about
I think Spongebob is my favorite Nicktoon. Yes, even with season 6-8 existing, I can say I still rather watch SpongeBob over everything else on Nickelodeon, especially nowadays.
Season 1-5: Good as a whole (with some duds) Season 6-8: Terrible (with a few shiners) Season 9-12...: Bounces Back on Track/Better than Previous Seasons
Spongebob is such an important part of my life. When I was 10 or 11, I had seen every episode ever of the show and was so proud of myself. I also had a shit ton of DVDs, posters, etc. Another part of the show I love is the near endless amount of memorable quotes that I can say to friends and they will recognise.
If the show ended at Season 4, it would be my favorite cartoon of all time. As a whole, i still think it's a good show. There are good episodes in the new seasons.
I think one reason why Spongebob has endured for so long is because it somehow manages to stay applicable and relatable, no matter how old you get. When you’re a kid, you’ll relate more to Spongebob and Patrick’s antics, but when eventually start to grow up, you find yourself relating more Squidward or even Mr. Krabs and Plankton. And even then, the show manages to draw out a laugh no matter the situation because it has a gag to laugh at for every situation - the internet alone has proven that.
The first three seasons were my whole childhood and it'll be hard for me for another show to top that. The jokes usually landed very well, the world & character had a lot of personality & cool designs and it was such a creative show imo! This video gives me the need of (re)watch the whole series but it's harder as I grow up...
Ah yes, the one I HAVE been waiting for....Spongebob has quite the history with me. Season 1-3 of Spongebob is still my favorite Nicktoon of all time. Seasons 4-5 have ruts but I'd classify it as a silver age. I dropped the show after that because 6-9 are sadly awful. What I once treasured as my ultimate jewel of TV....Was awful, it made me upset, I didn't wanna watch, I loathed it...However Spongebob IS in a rebirth. With great episodes you've mentioned like Karen's virus, Mimic madness, Birthday blowout was incredible and the Halloween and Christmas specials. Even that musical was great. It's very tragic that we lost Stephen Hillenburg, I really have to say though, it just feels good that Spongebob is.....Well good again. Even though I myself don't think it's quite season 2-3 good contrary to what you said, but it's still very good. Even so, there's just this positivity surrounding Spongebob on the internet these days. Maybe it's helped because of memes or nostalgia, but it just puts me in a good mood to see Spongebob loved again and to personally feel it again. Like I said, it's my favorite Nicktoon of all time, I owe a lot to it and it shaped a big part of my childhood. So here's to Spongebob! Thank you, Spongebob, Thank you Steve and thank you all who made this possible. You shaped some of my finest childhood memories! I'm not sure I can answer why Spongebob stole the hearts of many, but he absolutely stole mine and even though he may be bad again, it's just great to see him at least climb out of the rut, and it may just happen again if he gets bad again. *OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHOLIVESINAPINEAPPLEUNDERTHESEA?*
See, I was more of a Cartoon Network kind of person. Hell, when I _did_ watch Nickelodeon, I remembered when Rugrats were on the top of the world. Jimmy Neutron, Fairly Oddparents, CatDog, stuff like that.
This right here is a legacy! I remember watching this on TV and all the memories I have with it from your Atrocities series to Stephen Hillenburg's death. SpongeBob has made our childhoods better because of it. Thank you Stephen for helping create a beautiful if flawed show that will last a lifetime! Next time MrEnter will listen to a story As Told By Ginger! But seriously why didn't you do SpongeBob first then Rocket Power?
There are so many lines from the show that I know by heart and still make me smile and laugh even now. "The inner machinations of my mind are an enigma." (carton of milk spilling)
Noticed something recently. Does it seem like like cartoons with yellow characters at the forefront last longer? I mean, Spongebob, The Simpsons, Pokémon. All have yellow major characters, all long running.
While I haven't watched SpongeBob since the first film due to overexposure, I can respect the sponge's ability to keep going and I do hope Nickelodeon does right by him. Stephen Hillenburg made something special and was able to course-correct it once it faltered. RIP Stephen Hillenburg.
While I’m happy that you can find joy in the zany energy of the newest SpongeBob episodes but I feel like they’re best when they’re more subdued. It’s just the underlying irony that life under the sea is as boring and flawed as our world
Me too. I found the show because of him. I watched the Most disturbing episodes in kid's cartoons and I read the comment section. I was like: "OK, the main character is a (joke) villain, who tries to take over the Earth. Sounds like an interesting premise. I need something unique anyway." I really liked aliens as a kid (and I enjoy sci-fi), and not that I don't heard about similar ideas before but it was never the bad guy's point of view in this "alien tries to invade Earth". Shortly: I was not disappointed: they did a random/gross out humor good, the characters are memorable, the concepts are interesting, they perfectly mixed cute with dark... it become my new number one favourite cartoon. This series feels so refreshing in so many ways.
While I did enjoy the previous seasons of Spongebob, I have to agree that Season 11 is my personal favorite season as well. They really went all out with the animation, the expressions of the characters, the absurdity and wackiness and the comedy of the episodes. And I must say, reminisce of Ren & Stimpy really does show. And I love how they made references to some old episodes, characters, and gags, my personal favorite episode being, "My Leg!". So in a way, I dig the new direction this series has taken, while keeping some of the older elements. A nice blend if I do say so myself ^w^
I was half-expecting him to mention Kamp Koral towards the end, but I'm kind of glad he didn't. That's another video for another time (in fact, I'm pretty sure he's already made a video about that whole shitstorm)
SpongeBob as a character just seems to scream "lovable cartoon character" so perfectly. His voice, his character design, his personality, the way he moves. He's kinda like Rocko where the moment you look at him, you're like, "This is a good cartoon character." It's kinda like Roger in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. He's supposed to be annoying and loud and idiotic, but who the hell can say that they hated him and wanted him to get Dipped?!
I think it was this show because, as you mentioned in your Kamp Koral video, Spongebob is versatile. He may not fill any one niche the deepest, but he can fill the _most_ niches. Other shows can and often do have a bigger impact on individual people, but Spongebob's been able to touch most people at least some. He's like Mario in that he's very easy to pick up and get into no matter who you are.
"Chocolate? Did you say chocolate?!" ... "Chocolate?!? CHOCOLATE?!?! CHOCOLAAAAATE!!!!! CHOCOLAAAAATE!!!!! CHOCOLAAAAATE!!!!! CHOCOLAAAAATE!!!!! CHOCOLAAAAATE!!!!! CHOCOLAAAAATE!!!!! CHOCOLAAAAATE!!!!!
Spongebob is my favorite nick toon not named avatar. The humor from the classic seasons still hold up to this day. It’s a cultural phenomenon because it was one of the first main stream shows that every single demographic took a liking to. Spongebob is one of the main reasons animation is such a respected medium to this day. It’s ingenuity, creativity, humor and characters are unique and can never properly be copied by any other show.
Gary with a pickle between his eyes going "Meow!" in response to the realtor asking if there are any other Squidwards she should know about NEVER fails to crack me up. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I feel like the most recent episodes have movements and expressions that are so exaggerated and so far detached from reality that the physical jokes just aren't that funny anymore.
they can be Going too far out at times in later seasons but its clear that some of these choices are to add elements the old stuff had. I Stopped watching the show closely (not for any particular reason) but id say the show is still has enough there to get me to watch one episode every once in a long while (which is what ive done with episodes in seasons past 8)
10 years ago, I thought it was really weird how an animated show could go on for so long, but now it seems to be happening more often. This show is having some good moments right now though, as you said.
My dad is a science journalist, and for one article he took pictures of himself melting a small plastic toy he'd found back into the oil it was made from. After it was published he came to me saying half the responses were from people yelling "OH GOD WHAT DID YOU DO TO SPONGEBOB??!" He'd never heard of the show and didn't realise who he just melted...
What do I have to say about Spongebob? Hmm... Well, at this point in time, Spongebob has definitely struck a chord with almost everyone, be it good or bad. For me, while I don't enjoy a certain set of episodes from the show, there are plenty of episodes I do enjoy and are happy to come back to. Maybe even more in the future. It's definitely unfortunate to see Stephen pass away so soon, but he has certainly created a character that has definitely changed the world. I'm happy to have been with Spongebob since the beginning and see him transcend into the phenomenon he is today. Thank you, Stephen, for creating a character with style, that makes me smile.
I just took what you said about you thinking the post second movie era is better than the pre movie era and it got me thinking a lot. And damn I think I agree. A lot of people of my generation see the show as nothing more than good Nostalgia but it might not be as good looking back but there's still some good to be found even in the later seasons. And I agree that I've been loving these last three seasons of SpongeBob
I'd say it's typical for a show to have its first season to be a bit lacking or dull, so I think that's fair for Spongebob. I mean, just look at shows like Family Guy or Simpsons, their first seasons had less defined animation and the episodes were pretty simplistic.
"May he still be tapping into that magic wherever he is now."
We're gonna miss Hillenburg, that's for sure.
RIP Mr. Hillenburg. You are loved and missed.
Restbin Peace, Steven. You created my favorite animated show.

Spongebob SquarePants - Literally has a meme for every situation
It's gotta be my favorite Nickelodeon show.
SpongeBob is my favorite Nickelodeon show of all time.
Probably has a meme in every episode that’s how amazing spongebob is
SpongeBob is definitely one of the most meme-able cartoons of all time, but I also feel that the show tapped into the mindset of being a millenial in a way other shows haven't. i relate so strongly. im so glad i grew up with it and i cant imagine any other show replacing it.
The last 90's Nicktoon that's still going strong.
Karl Julien the only 90s nicktoon
@@mariogamefreak1 Yep, that too. It continues and managed to stand out above the rest.
It's going well enough
It's 'going strong' in that it still pushes merch and gets kids attention-- but I actually wonder how many kids *watch* the show itself, or why they'd want to when so much of the humor and animation now dives into Ren & Stimpy territory or body horror.
The only 1990's Nicktoon that is still making new episodes.
I can't imagine Nickelodeon without this show.

I think it works because it's so well contrasted by Squidward who has the exact same life as Spongebob but he just views it in a different light
@@Antiformed I feel the same, really.
@@rsome977 Exactly.
SpongeBob is my favorite Nicktoon of all time, due to the funny characters and silly stories.
Thank you, Stephen Hillenburg!
I love SpongeBob too, may Stephen Hillenburg R.I.P
He also stated in a livestream that his favorite SpongeBob season is Season 3 if he was limited to only picking stuff from the pre-movie era.
I think EmpororLemon went into this in detail, but in summary:
The reason that Spongebob gets so much longjevity because of Squidward. When Spongebob provides the kids' perspective on the universe of bikini bottom, Squidward provides the adult perspective so everyone has something to watch.
Squidward and SpongeBob aren’t really in my top 3 for SpongeBob characters.

Actually I would stick to seasons 1-3 the rest of the show looks bad in compression, but if not I would recommend. Squid noir and sanitation insanity.

As someone who grew up with the sponge, I believe the show's cultural impact stems from a few things
- It's a show for both kids and adults; it's not just a kids show with some adult humor and concepts throw in, there are episodes that touch on adult-themed topics like Mid-Life Crustacean and Squid on Strike that kids could follow okay, but really connect with when they get older.
Also, I like the slowness of season 1. It feels slow, but it’s a nice way to catch every joke.
Season 1-5: Good as a whole (with some duds)
Season 6-8: Terrible (with a few shiners)

Spongebob is such an important part of my life. When I was 10 or 11, I had seen every episode ever of the show and was so proud of myself. I also had a shit ton of DVDs, posters, etc. Another part of the show I love is the near endless amount of memorable quotes that I can say to friends and they will recognise.

Spongebob connects with a large audience because of his admirable character traits. He’s hard working, nice and fun.
If the show ended at Season 4, it would be my favorite cartoon of all time. As a whole, i still think it's a good show. There are good episodes in the new seasons.
If Steven hillenburgh stayed we could have more better episodes
I think one reason why Spongebob has endured for so long is because it somehow manages to stay applicable and relatable, no matter how old you get. When you’re a kid, you’ll relate more to Spongebob and Patrick’s antics, but when eventually start to grow up, you find yourself relating more Squidward or even Mr. Krabs and Plankton.
And even then, the show manages to draw out a laugh no matter the situation because it has a gag to laugh at for every situation - the internet alone has proven that.

SpongeBob as a character just seems to scream "lovable cartoon character" so perfectly. His voice, his character design, his personality, the way he moves.

I'd say it's typical for a show to have its first season to be a bit lacking or dull, so I think that's fair for Spongebob. I mean, just look at shows like Family Guy or Simpsons, their first seasons had less defined animation and the episodes were pretty simplistic.
