Very proud to say I WAS THERE and still have the stub of my ticket, what an occasion. I was an apprentice joiner on a terribly awful wage (slave labour) my pal and I finished up on the park at the end. That experience will never leave me. the ticket was 10 shillings and the train was 5 pounds return. I had saved up for the occasion, those were the days we appreciated small things and all the things our parents did for us!! Changed days.

Jim McCalliog - debut for Scotland, against England at Wembley, and he scores the winning goal.
Player named William Wallace leading the Scots attack.
He and three club teammates that afternoon had not long lifted the European Cup, first British team to do so.

I can remember feeling nervous when I heard that Scotland were going to field 2 uncapped players against the World Champions. It turned out that they were among the best on the pitch.
As it turned out that 1967 was a great year for Scottish football when Celtic won the European Cup and did it with a team, none of whom were born more than 10 miles from Glasgow.
These days you are lucky if the winners are all from the same Continent! Money has ruined the beautiful game.

I watched this match on the TV as a kid. I was a bag of nerves waiting for England to turn it on, and so disappointed that it didn't happen. I've just been a bag of nerves again, even though I knew the outcome. I still think England did well to keep the deficit down to one goal, playing with 10 effective men for most of the match. Entertainment like it used to be.

I miss the days when Scotland played England in the old Home Internationals. What a great Scottish team this was. A really good mix of Rangers, Celtic, and Anglos. Scotland used to produce some of the world's best players, as did England. I remember watching this game on the telly with my dad and our neighbour, who came from Aberdeen. After it was over, he went home and came back with a bottle of whisky he'd been saving and poured the old man a few generous drams to show there was no hard feelings. Being 11, I had to make do with a bottle of pop.

The best we have done is a handful of semi-finals (a stage which Wales have also reached in a major tournament.) Well done to Scotland for beating us 2-3 at Wembley. That’s probably the best you have played against us at Wembley or in England in general since before WWII. No subsequent Scotland side has played that well against England at Wembley not even in the matches that you won in 1977, 1981 and 1999.
This was truly a classy Scotland team that included Denis Law, Jim Baxter, Billy Bremner and Tommy Gemmell. From start to finish Scotland dominated us in this match.

I remember the game but not the details. I know, as an England supporter that I was very disappointed that Scotland won. England's first defeat since winning the World Cup I think. As a young lad of 11 I thought England should be invincible. Watching this now, I can see that there were some very good skilful footballers on both sides and Scotland played very well. I think that Scotland, even more so than England, have suffered in terms of the quality of their teams in more recent times, in my view, due to the importation of so many foreign players into the English Premier League. All of the names of the players sound so familiar. Its like watching old friends and so much more recognisable names and faces, to me, than the players of today.

This was the Home Championship match counted as a Nations Cup tie.
England were unbeaten in 19 matches when they hosted Scotland at Wembley in April 1967.
But they were in for a shock when the visitors registered a 3-2 win to hand the world champions their first defeat.
England claimed Scotland's win was a hollow one as the home team were playing with only nine fit men.
All the same Scotland deserved their victory. The likes of Bobby Lennox,Denis Law and Jim Baxter were simply world class especially the last who teased and taunted the English back line.

No idea that Jack C had been injured early on. Does anyone know when Denis Law started to develop injuries? Even here he looks less dynamic than the 1963 version who played in the cup final. He seemed to lose his pace and engine early in his career. The game was just so much more physical in those days. Today the players are on more sophisticated doping programs. Back then it was just amphetamines but the tackling was more robust.

About 15 years back on bbc radio 4 was a documentary about football in days gone by with a hilarious quote from Stanley Matthews regarding the morning he awoke with a bout of flu and had told the club doctors he wasn’t fit for anything -let alone an important fixture against Wolves or Blackburn . The doctor was having none of this and handed Stan a handful of pills saying “ these will sort that out chap “ or something to that effect. What followed was Stanleys’ recounting of the hat-trick he’d bagged followed by his getting home , doing the garden then getting back out of bed to “ tidy up the magazine rack and put the hoover round “ .... ‘ just what the doctor ordered ‘ 🙄regards from Wessex ps I believe there WAS a clip where Stanley or another player declared “ we had no idea what the doc would hand out - they’d say they were vitamins “ pls loved your interview with Sparks 😁

That last Scotland goal starting up with the build up around the 1:33:04 mark was classic. First the scorer Jim McCalliog ran into an open space between two opponents to receive the ball, then played a one two which ended up into the empty spot behind the confronting defender when the then rifled it past Gordon Banks.

      Not really...
The only concern about that match in 1967 was whether it impacted qualification for the 1968 European Championship, the injuries to England players who had been crocked by Scots during that match, and what state Wembley Stadium would be in afterwards.
It is difficult to see why Scots get so excited about this result. Even with England having Jack Charlton crocked, they still only lost by the odd goal.
Jim Baxter swaggering around, the McCalliog goal, and possibly even the Lennox goal, all took place when England had about eight fit men.
It was England's first defeat in 20 matches. They were bound to slip up at some point. England gave West Germany their first defeat after the 1974 World Cup Final. So what?
So what if England lost to Scotland in 1967. Next time Scotland came down to Wembley, they got their arses handed to them on plates, as was becoming increasing the norm when the two sides played each other.

Even Franz Beckenbauer admitted that England were the better side on the balance of play.

    @yiseng4602 4 ปีที่แล้ว

England as the World Cup champions were expected to beat Scotland easily in this 1967 Home Championship match which also counted as a Nations Cup tie.
England had gone 19 matches unbeaten and were expected to extend it to 20 but Sir Alf Ramsey's charges had not been aware that England-Scotland clashes had always been a closed affair.Only the year before in the Home Championship at Hampden Park England fought out a thrilling match with Scotland with the former finally emerging 4-3 winners. If not for Nobby Stiles who saved on the line with his outstretched leg the match would have been drawn 4-4.
Now except for Jimmy Greaves all the rest were World Cup winners with England at Wembley. The English fans expect an England mauling of the visitors who last won at Wembley in 1963.
But there were unfortunate incidents on the Wembley pitch that affected the home team.Ray Wilson was out with an injury and so was lanky Jack Charlton who was carrying a hamstring injury and virtually a passenger for the rest of the match as there was no substitutions in those days.
With only nine fit men on the pitch England were found wanting and their defense was cruelly exposed.
All the same the home team fought to the last and yes Jack Charlton despite carrying an injury scored one of the two England goals.
The Scots were elated after the final whistle sounded as if the visitors had won the World Cup.
Denis Law who scored the first goal then approached England's goalkeeper Gordon Banks and cockily said to the latter," Since we have beaten you are we not unofficially the world champions?"A bemused Banks back off even refusing a plate of mayonnaise.
As for Alan Ball his hatred for Scotland was legendary it was the only time he suffered defeat playing against the Scots.
Scotland were worthy winners that afternoon at Wembley but their victory was a hollow one being aided by the unfortunate injuries to Ray Wilson and Jack Charlton.
Nevertheless it cannot be denied Scotland's victory at Wembley. They in fact dominated the proceedings and could have scored more than three goals.Bobby Lennox,Ian Macreadie,John Greig,Ian Wallace and of course Jim Baxter and Denis Law were all outstanding but Jim Baxter performance was world class. He teased and tormented the English defense and even juggled with the ball. This was vintage Jim Baxter.Jim Baxter had the knack of scoring against Gordon Banks he did that in 1963 also at Wembley with a brace.

What a load of nonsense . Who are Ian McCreadie and Ian Wallace . Scotland were by far the better side on the day. The injured Jackie Charlton somehow managed to run about for 90 mins and score a goal . One thing you failed to mention was that Jimmy Johnstone was due to play but dropped out and was replaced by his Celtic team mate , Willie Wallace . After the match , it emerged that Denis Law was not happy with Baxter's on field antics and told him so , saying that the team could and would have scored more goals but for his showboating . That said , for me the classiest player on the Wembley pitch was Bobby Charlton - you can tell how much he modelled his game on Alfredo Di Stefano .
