  • My mom and I decided to do a video together about how we started my journey. You guys are the reason I am pushing myself to face my fears and be brave. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping me beat my ARFID. Before starting this journey I refused to try any new foods and I’ve come such a long way because of all of your support and motivation. Thanks for being a part of my journey and for your continued encouragement and support. I would not be where I am if it weren’t for all of you 🫶 #arfid #arfidawareness #eatingdisorder #eatingdisorderawareness #safefood #autism #asd #autismawareness #adhd #ocd #pickyeater #pickyeaters #sensoryprocessingdisorder #weightloss #growth #nutrition #food #anxiety #stress #scared #fear #trauma #spd #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #support #motivation #thankful #ed #recovery #hannah #journey #myarfidlife #awareness

Hannah is absolutely the sweetest, bravest, and most inspiring young woman. My 7-year-old daughter struggles with restrictive eating, and when I came across Hannah on instagram a few weeks ago, I showed my daughter. Since then, she asks every day if Hannah has tried anything new or posted anything new. She loves watching Hannah's videos, we are all cheering Hannah on, and my daughter has been willing to try foods she never would have otherwise. Thank you for what you're doing. Way to go, Hannah.

I agree that Hannah is a really sweet girl, but there is one thing I want to correct. Why are you calling an 8 YEAR OLD a young woman? She has not even developed yet, she shouldn't be called a "woman" by any means. Not even a young woman. She is a girl.

@@sofiagoncalves9290if anything's wrong, it's the fact that you chose that one word out of her entire thing to pick at. You obviously need to seek therapy if one word triggers you and you completely put it in a different category. Personally, yes, you shouldn't call a child, young woman or young men, but do you do realize that people grew up in different generations and talk different? And there's also language barriers when it comes to people being in different parts of countries. So Miss Ward Police. You need to think of better things to do, then pick apart people's wording. The fact that you came up with that in your own brain goes to show that you need some help because your brain shouldn't be going there first

Hey Hannah’s mom! I’m a 16 year old girl from the UK who is aspiring to be a children’s psychologist when I grow up. I just wanted to say how grateful I am you share these videos of Hannah, as I knew little about ARFID before but it has really educated me in different areas of mental health. I’m so proud of Hannah’s journey so far and thank you for inspiring me to learn more. I wish you all the best! 🤍🤍

I like to eat spinach see if you can talk to your daughter she’s cute And to see if you can give that a shot if she rejected then let me know. I will come up with suggestions. Have a wonderful day. You are a wonderful, great mother to your daughter.❤

I grew up with ARFID before it was a formal diagnosis. Back then my “treatment” was ridicule, screaming matches & forced exposure. It makes me SO beyond happy to see the challenges and real experience recognized, humanized, treated, and taken seriously. Thank you for raising awareness and doing the best for your baby❤

I had this when I was little and I did not know it was an eating disorder. I was shamed constantly for being so picky. I was also very sensitive physically too. I could not wear itchy clothes…or touch sticky things. But no one showed me understanding or grace. They just shamed and made fun of me. You’re such a good mom for taking time to figure out what your girl needs and I’m so proud of her for, fighting against the negative thoughts and fears. She is a total rockstar! And you are a good mom! You owe no one an explanation for why you’re doing what you’re doing. People can be so mean on social media…

I'm an adult with ARFID. When I was growing up, nobody knew what ARFID was. Everyone thought i was just a picky eater. My childhood was very rough. Food has been a problem my entire life. I never had my mom in my life growing up. Today I can eat a variety of foods, but it's very simple, I'm texture sensitive, etc. I wish you both nothing but goodwill and blessings. The fact a child has a parent who is aware of ARFID and willing to invest the time and energy into helping them deal with it is amazing. I hope one day every person with ARFID can get treatment.

I’m also a parent of a child with ARFID. He is 8 as well. This account (and your IG) has brought me SO much hope and happiness. I watched several of the videos on IG today with my son. He related very much to your explanations of how you feel around foods. He’s been in feeding therapy (with a SLP) for almost 2 years. He’s better about trying things, but is still very reluctant and rarely does more than nibble. However, he hasn’t added anything to his safe list yet. Keep up the good work, we’re all cheering for you! 🎉

My 10 year old has ARFID - I just relate to all of this. Most of all, having other people share this channel with me and saying, “is this what J has?” It’s HUGE. People from all parts of our life have shared your channel and insta with us, and I can see this significant change in awareness just over the last few months.
My son also likes watching the videos, getting ideas of foods to try and offering his own commentary.
We’ve moved a lot did OT for four years at different places with no progress but finally found a great OT who specializes in food therapy where we live now. She was the first to truly understand that this is first and foremost a phobia and real fear / anxiety of new foods. When my 8 year old son ate a peanut butter sandwich 18months ago, I literally wept. A month ago he tried chicken nuggets with his therapist and added them to his safe food immediately. Again, I cried. After 7 years, we’re actually seeing progress. I love seeing Hannah progress too. There’s just so much hope here!

Thank you for creating your channel and your videos. Our son has dairy and egg allergies, anaphylaxis, and dur to poor management at daycare in the past has had to have his EpiPen administered 3 times. This last year we moved and found a much better kindergarten and he hasn't had an episode since. Anyway, that's just context, as he too is a very picky eater and has a lot of anxiety around trying new foods due to them potentially causing an allergic reaction. So, seeing Hannah being able to approach trying new foods on her own, being proud of herself, even if she doesn't like them, it gives me hope for my son. So again thank you for sharing

Thank you so much Hannah for sharing your journey. My just turned 9 year old son is soon going to be evaluated for arfid as I’m fairly certain this is what is going on. He loves watching your videos. Although he is a healthy weight, he has an extremely, extremely limited diet. His big goal is to have one thing he can order out at a restaurant. Even fries would be life changing. He still doesn’t eat anything that isn’t room temperature and only a couple things that are cold. He constantly tells me he so badly wants to try new things, but just can’t get himself to do it. Your videos have been so inspiring and he says he knows just how you feel before taking that first bite. It’s comforting to him to know there are others out there going through the same struggle. Thanks again for sharing. ❤

I just want to say, she is such a brave little girl. And also, it just goes to show what a good mom you are that she felt safe enough to open up about how anxious she was an just how much she was struggling. I struggled with many similar and different things growing up, but didn’t feel safe to share them with my family and it ended up becoming much more detrimental as I got older. So glad you are getting her the help now. It’s a long road and I’m sure it’s not going to be easy, but she is doing it and she should be so proud of herself! Sending love to Hannah and your whole family! You’re all doing an amazing job!

    Hannah and Momma bear,
My little man (7) has this and is diagnosed with ASD and his ARFID is strictly on the beige side. Soft foods and it’s been so difficult! He also got comments from the teachers and yard duties once he switched to a mainstream elementary. I immediately taped a note inside his lid of his lunchbox! I wrote, “Justyn struggles to eat, his foods are his safe foods, please do not comment on his diet! If you have questions please address me personally!”
No one commented again. I had to call the school and his teachers and I requested it be placed in his IEP! It made me so sad they said things to him! 🫤😳🤦🏼‍♀️

just came from a post on twitter about her and watched some of her videos trying foods and I could not be more proud of such a brave little girl, I don’t have ARFID but have struggled with my mental health for many years so I can understand how difficult and out of your control it is, but for her to take a strong stance against it and be so brave truly warmed my heart, it can be so much easier to give up and watch illnesses wreck your life that her being so small and yet so brave to fight it almost brought me to tears. She truly has become an inspiration for me and I will remember her when I feel like giving up on myself because of my anxiety and depression, I hope she knows there’s some of us who see her struggle and understand, and I send her all the support and strength! Hannah you’re my inspiration! and I’m so happy she has such a great family around her ❤

Proud of you Hannah! I had never heard of ARFID before I came across your Instagram but you motivated me to educate myself and now I'm one of your biggest supporters. Thanks for sharing your journey - it's awesome that your mum adapted the idea of taking videos to send to your therapist into sharing online to help motivate you and educate others, such as myself. Whenever I see your Instagram reels and you find a new food you would try again or a safe food I get so excited for you and your progress - I'm so glad you liked strawberries and blueberries, those are some of my favourite fruits!
You must be so proud of how far you've come and I hope that you continue to try new foods and expanding your safe foods lists so meal times are not so stressful for you. You're a beacon of optimism and positivity and I wish I was as brave as you when I was your age. Sending love from Australia, to you and your family ❤

i really resonated when you talked about the feedback from other people about safe foods/limited diet because that happened to me growing up almost any time i ate in front of people. it sucks to be made into a spectacle over something you can’t control. cheering you on hannah!!

Thank you both!! I worked in SPED in an elementary school and we had an autistic girl who had issues as Hannah has described. I’ve never heard of ARFID. She worked with the school Speech counselor and made great progress through the years. Which I’m grateful for her life that turn more healthy I guess I don’t know where she is now with it all but I hope her the best I’m hurting Hannah as well, you’re very brave little girl to be doing this for everybody. I know it’s for yourself as well but the amount of people that you’re helping is so good. And thank you to your mom and dad and your brothers, it affects everyone, so thank you for putting yourself out there.

Thank you for doing this! I’ve been struggling for a few years with how to treat my 10 year old son Chase and your story is identical to mine. Almost every detail and behavior. I shared a few of your daughter’s videos with him last night and it definitely resonated with him. More so than me just telling him. I actually like the idea of having a remote doctor (can you recommend yours?). And doing the videos. There’s always so much anxiety with the in person appointments. Feel like we are starting from scratch again but your videos provided so much clarity and motivation. Will keep watching with my son. . Thank you. Eric K

Hannah, we are all so proud of you!
I remember when I was in kindergarten, kids in my class shouted gross things when I ate and it always made me feel so sick. I went to the nurse with stomach aches on a regular basis. Then I consistently ate peanut butter sandwiches for lunch at school every day from 1st grade through high school. I would gag every time my parents tried to get me to eat new foods. Textures were really hard for me.
One of the biggest things that worked for me in overcoming my food anxiety was learning how to cook as an adult. There was something about the control I had making my own dinners, researching recipes, adding seasonings, chopping the ingredients, seeing every listed ingredient that took so much of the anxiety and unpredictability away that comes with others preparing my food. I’d start with foods I knew I liked and add one new thing (like mushrooms on pizza) as an add-on. And if I didn’t like the add-on, I could eat what I liked anyway. Or figuring out how to take scary foods and make them friendly foods by making them more like things I liked. Maybe I didn’t like raw mushrooms on pizza, but I liked them sautéed in oil and garlic where they’d get soft, kind of like mashed potatoes. So I highly recommend collaborative meals with fun food prep, where Hannah can choose the comfort food and choose one or two ways to change it up. Having her be head chef could mirror the same dynamic when she picks the food and makes a video, where she maintains control. Learning how to cook changed my whole perspective on food and being a picky eater.
Excited to see all the new things you try, Hannah!

Hi Hannah, I'm a 10 y/o kid from US I just recently stumbled onto your Instagram and me and my mom watched a few of the posts and instantly fell in love with your content. I struggle with ARFID as well, and it made me so happy to see other kids going through the same things. I haven't done feeding therapy yet, but your posts gave me ideas and I might try your way out! You seem like a very nice girl and when I saw your slime post I got excited because I also like slime and make my own, might start my own business soon as well! When I read the comments, I got so angry because these people have little to no information about what you, me, and others worldwide are going through. These people seem to not care or see what literally your whole account is about. Wishing you the best of luck on your journey, XOXO, - Dev

Hooray for your progress! I have watched some of your videos and one thing I'm alwasys impressed with is that you eat a whole piece of whatever it is - even if your first taste isn't so good = you continue to try more bites. And you are very clear about why you do/do not like something. Hope your journey continues!
