I got the A7iv with the 100-400 lens and its a beast! i do not and i repreat, i do not regret getting the 200-600 mm. And after stepping in to the world of the GM lenses i find it hard to not get anything else for the future.
Handheld at that distance is not the easiest. I bought a cheap carbon mono/tripod and a large LEOFOTO MH-60 Ball Head, which calms the whole system down and sharpens up your shots, and also give your arms a rest. You mentioned this I know. For days at a time I would not be without. (using A7RIV with grip and 600mm lens - so, heavy). 100-400 is a lightweight, but would a balanced ball head would still help with improved panning than handheld, I would imagine. More importantly, great vid and your luck to do such a shoot. When I retire I would enjoy that type of thing. :)
Did you use an ND or Variable ND filter for filming? Just wondered if you'd had any issues. I have one and can't use my variable ND as it won't focus, not even using manual focus, at anything longer than 100mm.
I use a VND all the time. Had no issues, if your exposure is too low you could have trouble focusing. But if you’re doing everything right then it might be a faulty item! 😳
That's really good to know, thank you. I'll try another brand. I've been using a Gobe variable ND and it works perfectly on my 24-105mm but not on my 100-400mm. @@LucasJohnsonFaustino
great review. For my a7rv, I am hesitating with sony 200-600mm. No regret 400mm too short (bird photography, wildlife...) ? did you try the apsc-s35 1.5 crop to make it 600mm 21Mpx ?
I don't do much film....I am sure the 100-400 lens is great...but...I am not a fan of external focus...my choice is the Sony fe 200-600/5.6-6.3...plus its cheap enough to buy outright used.
Thank you for your opinion! It’s always good to hear other points of view, I actually liked the slight movement in the shots due to the nature of what I was filming i felt added to the drama.
I agree! I rented it a few times and decided to buy it, it's amazing.
It certainly is!

Where did you rent yours from? Looking to take this to Le Mans this year.
Hire a Camera UK I believe!
What do you think of the Tamron 50-400mm f4.5-6.3?
Never used it!

That’s the combo! 👏🏼

Thank you! Yep, Works really great
Get both lenses. One for summer close ups (600+1.4x), the 400 can then be your everyday catch-all. #HappyDays

Not sure what you mean by external focus
Extending barrel maybe?@@LucasJohnsonFaustino
Thanks!
Thx for film
Thx for the video. I do think your video is too shaky, so I would recommend you using a tripod.
