Vangelis spent much time with the synths...exploring, exploring and composing. I believe he knew how to chunk information and worked with melodic patterns....analogous to quilting ...a practice encountered in modal music(centonism--working with preexisting patterns that are culture specific)...a characteristic of Greek music that surrounded Vangelis in Greece. This is not to say that his music was based on Greek folklore, it was not.
His music had clearly discernible influence from Greek Byzantine music. But from multiple other stuff and traditions as well. From everything and everywhere as it should and is right way.
I know Vangelis music for about a month now, and I'm starting to think he might be the greatest composer ever..
