How To Trout Fish New Mexico's Monastery Lake

- Only a few miles from Pecos and just inside the Santa Fe National Forest, Northern New Mexico's Monastery Lake is a favorite for many trout anglers. Stocked frequently by the New Mexico Game & Fish with rainbow trout this small lake is easily accessible, ideal for families and kids and stuffed with trout. We spent an evening catching and releasing rainbow trout with Fire Brine shrimp, Fire Balls, Fire Bait and Pautzke salmon eggs and detail how you can catch trout, too, in this episode of Pautzke Outdoors!

I flew out to New Mexico to visit family and stopped at monastery lake for some fishing. Thank you for this video it was fantastic! I caught more fish than anyone else on the lake the day I went out. So much so that a fly fisherman in full wading gear got pissed and left after he got skunked.
I should mention I was using an 8.50 cent fishing rod from Walmart since I didn't bring any of my gear on the plane. The rod is all of 2 feet long, literally smaller than the kids rods.
I did have more success with worms than salmon eggs but that's how it is sometimes. Perfect advice on the depth of the lake. Great video, you should be proud.
Putting glitter on salmon eggs is genius! Now I can tell the wife I was fishing when she asks about the glitter on my clothes!

The salmon eggs that were glowing/translucent work great at Fenton Lake! I like them when they get wet they stay on the hook, best way I can describe it like a gummy.

Pautzke Bait in the river the biggest one I caught was about a 15 inch rainbow. At monastery, I have only caught typical stocker size rainbows. Love your videos new subscriber! Thank you

The lake is small and so are the fish. Use pistol Pete's early morning and evening. This lake is always full with people the fish hatchery is less then three minutes away
