Eight years ago, the lead singer, sax and trombone player Angelo Moore (AKA Dr. Madd Vibe), was a housemate of mine. Really kind soul with an incredible energy. Love that guy. Loved that house. It was an incredible year of my life living with members of Fishbone, GWAR, Green Jello and Radiactive Chicken Heads. There's some bands you should react to! Take care man, thanks for doing these two Fishbone reactions!
I see the helpless and i see the insane I see the pauper singing in the pouring rain I see the means of help elude us again I think the sun will never visit me again... Relevant today more than ever
You have no idea how happy this made me to see. This song is what absolutely got me into Fishbone last year and it's really the tip of the iceberg because they just hit so many different types of music. They've instantly hit my bucket list of bands to see live before I die because they're still going and they still put on a hell of a show (the OG lineup just reunited in the last couple of years and started touring again). If you dig them, I would love to see you react to more of their stuff. Also check out the documentary on them when you get a chance. Really fascinating and raw look at the band and their history.
You just discovered Fishbone last year? That's pretty sweet. Fishbone is in my top 3 live experiences, with The Roots and Prince. Absolutely incredible live when I saw them and I hear they're still amazing.
if you are interested in black metal/punk/hardcore bands.. Bad Brains - Banned in DC, I against I, Right Brigade, Big Take Over.. the played reggae too and live mixed the genres flawlessly. Legendary Band.
U-G-L-Y You ain't got no alibi You're just Uuuuugly. Some of the best shows I've ever been to. I probably weighed about 160 lbs back then but I'd lose 20 lbs after a FISHBONE show.
I always forget they did the soundtrack for "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" with Curtis Mayfield. Their version of Freddie's Dead is probably the best cover of a song ever....
They were on their way up, but the lead guitarist ended up joining a cult and quitting the band, Norwood Fisher (bass), and Angelo Moore (vocals, trumpet) drove up from LA, to Marin in NorCal to deprogram him. They were arrested for kidnapping... Put a damper on their career.
i saw them live at The Sting in New Britain, CT somewhere back in '91-'93(-ish?)... every one of them is multi-talented, they were _throwing_ instruments back & forth between the stage hands-- there were literally guitars, trombones, sousaphones flying through the air 😂 it was the middle of summer, & it was so hot in the venue, the floor was _completely_ wet with sweat, & no one left fully clothed 🤣
I love how you look for the deeper meaning, you understand that the surface is nothing and you dig down. You are the best kind of person, together we can save this world.
I think this song is about depression due to the state of the world. Fishbone is one of the best bands ever, period. They are well worth your time. It is a shame they never hit it as big as some other bands. They’re still around and tour occasionally. I go see them every chance I get, and these days it is rare, but still happens once in a blue moon.
This is great! I really appreciate that you would cover some early American punk and hardcore. You should check out Bad Brains. Another hardcore band who are considered pioneers of the sound and they all happen to be Rastafarian. Fishbone and Bad Brains are two of the craziest live shows you could ever see. It's impossible to describe the energy in rooms like that. Thanks again! Keep up the outstanding work!
I've seen them live three times in small venues in South Carolina. Twice in the 90's and once about 2 years ago. Each time, Angelo Moore mingles in the audience before or after their set. I have spoken with him all three times and I always thank him for all the great music over the years. He always responds "Well, how do you like the new stuff?".
Jamel, this was my official summer song of 1991. when I hear it I remember that summer, that year perfectly. I've also seen them live many, many years ago.
I saw them in 1988. One of the best shows ever. Fishbone was very different early on. In their early days they were America’s best ska band - maybe the only ska band anyone knew about in this country. Check out their early tunes like Party at Ground Zero or Ugly to discover the sound that originally made them famous. And they’re from LA!
Lyrics I see the pestilence outside my window I see the dung heaps piled at least a mile high I see the shards of shattered dreams in the street I face the morning with my customary sigh I hear the sounds of children laughing aloud A stumbling wind has attracted quite a crowd My breakfast finished now I brave the outside But all the clouds have hidden all the warmth inside Chase these clouds away I hate this sunless Saturday Chase these clouds away I hate this sunless Saturday Freedom come For us now Light our sky Burn away these clouds, yeah Perhaps the charcoal gray and brown around me Is just the mirror image of my tainted soul I think the sun will never visit my sky Until the truth is seen by each and every eye Chase these clouds away I hate this sunless Saturday Freedom come For us now Light our sky Burn away these clouds I see the helpless and I see the insane I see a pauper singing in the pouring rain I see the means of help elude us again I think the sun will never visit me again Chase these clouds away I hate this sunless Saturday Saturday, Saturday Saturday, no more sunless Saturday Saturday, no more sunless Saturday, hey hey Yeah, sunless Saturday Sunless Saturday, yeah
I saw Fishbone at 1st Avenue and at The Mirage in Minneapolis in the 90s. At First Ave, Angelo Moore dove from the stage, surfed the crowd to the back of the bar, then climbed up the wall and rallied the crowd hanging from outside the sound booth. At the Mirage show, Angelo crowd-surfed right over my wife (before we were married). She looked at me and said, "I think Angelo just sweated on me." Such an exciting moment for some twenty-something rockers.
Angelo is the truth! One of the first shows I ever saw in 1994 and was lucky enough to meet Angelo. He let me into a 19 year old show to see them when I was 18 as my brother interviewed the band at the college radio station at Iowa (KRUI) and gave them a ride to the show in our 1982 Grand Prix. One of my best memories!!!
Check out the album Truth & Soul. One of my favorite albums of all time. Ma and Pa, questions for life, and bonin in the boneyard, Change and many many more the whole album is fantastic
Basically, when Fishbone came around back in the 80s, it was unlike anything anyone had seen or heard. Naturally, record company execs had no idea what to do with them or how to market them. They were always right on the cusp of fame, but they never quite got past the status of being a huge cult band-even with movie appearances and this video that was directed by Spike Lee. Check out the video for Everyday Sunshine next!
Fishbone is fantastic. I've been a huge fan since the late-1980s, when I was just entering my teens. They started as a very eclectic mix of ska, funk, and soul, with punk touches. Within a few records, though, they'd be showing more explicit guitar-driven tendencies, with song writing, and arrangement influences from progressive rock bands, such as Yes, and Pink Floyd. The first big song I heard from them was the excellent "Party at Ground Zero" (1985), but their biggest breakthrough has to be their 1991 record, The Reality of My Surroundings. That album is on fire, from the opening stabs of "Fight the Youth", to the fadeout of "Sunleess Saturday". My favorite parts of the record have to be the two paired pieces on the record: "Asswhippin" with "Housework"; and "Jukies Prayer" with "Pray to the Junky Maker". The whole record is an experience to behold, though. Get some headphonees and an hour to yourself in a dimly lit room. You'll be happy. Also, yeah, Fishbone is still kind of together, despite a lot of drug-related ups, and downs over the years. They even have a couple of live dates this year in CA and FL.
Yahh man. Fishbone is great! One of my faves from the 90's. You should react to "Everyday Sunshine" and "Fight the Youth" and their cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead". Also watch their documentary called "Everyday Sunshine" from 2011. Such a crazy journey.
Fight the Youth is a fucking jam. They closed an outdoor show in Hawaii in 1993 I was at with Sunless Saturday and it was to this day one the highest energy performances I’ve ever seen any band play with and I’ve seen a lot. That crazy acoustic outro is burned in my mind, the backdrop of the show was like a 15-20 foot hurricane swell breaking way outside Chinamans Hat (look it up) island in Kaneohe Bay. Unreal
For more Fishbone, as many people have already suggested but I will suggest again, Everyday Sunshine and Party at Ground Zero should be your next visits on the Fishbone music tour. One of my favorite bands and one of the best concerts I've ever been to. My friends and I had to get fake ID's to see them because we were under 21 and they were playing 21-and-up show back when I was in high school I think it was (might've been a freshmen in college, I don't remember that far back :P ). None of us drank, btw, we just wanted to get in to see Fishbone. ^_^
This video was directed by Spike Lee, and is fantastic!! This is my favorite Fishbone song, and i get a real Dream Theater vibe from this track. These guys are the real deal!! More Fishbone...
This entire album is GREAT! You really should do "Fight The Youth" next! FISHBONE! I've seen them live twice: the first time I got to go backstage and meet them. 2nd time, they played with none other than the mighty Primus!
"Sunless Saturday" is the companion song to the "Sly and the Family Stone" style banger "Everyday Sunshine" (or vice versa). 90's Fishbone is far less frenetic and far more polished than 80's Fishbone -- a mosh pit of confections that defied expectations with songs like "Ugly," "? (Modern Industry)," "Party at Ground Zero," "Lyin' Ass Bitch" and others.
A child of the 70s/80s, I like the frenetic and less polished version of the band. To me, when bands try to go slower, go "another direction" (as many say), or even mix in a different Jandra, it most times fails (too many rock and metal bands to name here). All these bands go away from the roots, then they suck and lose their identity. JMHO
I'm a white middle aged guy in Australia, and this has been my favourite song since I bought the album back in 1991. Nobody I know has even heard of Fishbone. Their loss, Wishbone are hugely underrated.
This track is from their CD “the reality of my surroundings”. It is indeed about darks days I would say, it is also about the surroundings of growing up in hard neighborhoods where making progress is incredibly hard and trying to remain positive is a challenge hence the sunless saturday. I remember once reading an interview with singer Angelo saying that he grew up in a more middle class neighborhood but surely other band members have not had it easy. In any case Fishbone are great advocates for the disadvantaged and vulnerable. Check out the song “pray to the junkiemaker”: this is what happens when the Sunless Saturday takes hold and destroys lives when escaping through drugs. I feel it is a masterpiece but like many songs on this album it takes a couple of times to listen to. What is so great about Fishbone is their energy and complexity mixing styles and instruments. That sometimes takes some getting used to but once you do you appreciate their musical talent. Another band that mixes energy and styles is Mano Negro, also truly amazing when seen live.
My favorite group of ALL TIME. If you want another deep lyrical Fishbone song, check out Pray to the Junkiemaker or They All Have Abandoned Their Hopes.
What you heard is what the band became, you have to start from the beginning with fishbone. They are one of the most incredible live acts you’ll ever see.
I love Fishbone so much. An American treasure. If you keep going down the rabbit hole with them -- Unyielding Conditioning is a great change up and gets to their Ska roots. There's a great live version on YooToob titled "Fishbone On Conan",..or, the original video is dope as well.
I think Fishbone could have had pretty much the same fame and fortune, but I guess RHCP was just easier to market somehow. Putting that aside, however, both bands were not only contemporaries on the scene, but also allies, very supportive of each other, rather than having any hostile rivalry. Regardless of who reaches the riches, that's the sort of camaraderie that can make the music scene of an era truly great and memorable. Fishbone have been out there giving it their all for a long time, and through some really rough times, too. Fishbone can be very off-the-wall, too. They'll have one song about a very important, deep social/political issue, and then the next song might be about doing crazy stuff like getting it on in a cemetery. They won't leave you bored. :D
Thank you for reacting to this video. I think the messaging behind this song was simply that of confinement and restriction. Though it can easily be applied to incarceration. I feel that the projects and ghettos are in themselves a cell block (of sorts) which restricts those who live within them from the access that outsiders may have. Seeing that Saturdays are often seen as a time of relaxation, the band is illustrating that this is not the reality of those with systematically limited means. "Chase these clouds away. I hate these sunless Saturdays." Another interesting fact is that this video was directed by Spike Lee. Rock on, my dude.
...nah, man: They are, just, talkin' about being: depressed, sad, FEELING so bad that it seems like "the sun will never visit" you again. -You've been there?? ...I have!
Fishbone is one of those bands that you can't put into any one category; are they metal? Are they ska? Funk? Soul? The answer is: yes. Definitely listen to the fans and check out Everyday Sunshine; it's one of those songs that just makes your day so much better. Party at Ground Zero, Cholly, Ma and Pa, Ugly...just some of the other tunes you should also scope. Fishbone has a lot of slept on songs.
Great reaction! Now you've reacted to Deftones and Fishbone, check out Bad Brains, who influenced both bands, along with Dave Grohl, rage against the machine, etc. Check out 'I against I', 'God of Love', 'Sacred Love', 'Build a Nation', 'Give Thanks and Praises' and 'Soul Craft' to see their diversity.
Also not sure where to do requests but you might get into Ghost Town by The Specials . They were a mixed race band during the ska movement in the 80s in England. They were one of those bands that started this anti racist punk /ska movement fighting with words for equal rights in the u.k. sorry I ramble. So happy I stumbled across your channel you've got a beautiful soul.
Everyday Sunshine is a perfect follow up to this. Also check Fight the Youth. The 2 songs you did are brilliant but they lack the brass that is such a big part of their sound.
Eight years ago, the lead singer, sax and trombone player Angelo Moore (AKA Dr. Madd Vibe), was a housemate of mine. Really kind soul with an incredible energy. Love that guy. Loved that house. Black rock needs to come back. Back in the 90s you could hear them on the radio.
You have no idea how happy this made me to see. The Pinnacle
Right On! 🤘🏽
yeah, killer album.
Now, watch the “sequel”, Everyday Sunshine! Perfect counterpoint to this song.
i love how that was held for later in the tracklist, a nice call and response as you listen through the record, breaking through the clouds
If there was a definition for slept on group. These guys are it. My favourite band and to them live unbelievable
if you are interested in black metal/punk/hardcore bands.. Bad Brains - Banned in DC, I against I, Right Brigade, Big Take Over.. the played reggae too and live mixed the genres flawlessly. Legendary Band.

24/7spyz was good.
Fishbone had a huge influence on Gwen Stefani and No Doubt. She mentions them all the time!
Truth and Soul is an amazing album. 'Bone'n in the Boneyard' Funky bass!!!

Check out "party at ground zero" or "everyday sunshine" by them. They had insane live shows back then.
They still tour occasionally now, and are still great to see.

I've been fortunate enough to have opened for this band twice. Love me some FISHBONE
And now Fishbone ..... saw these back in the day, 92/93 oh yeah and guess who the support was ????
TOOL..... I was spoilt that night ;)
Wow
They've been through some wild shit.
Not 100% correct
If you want more Fishbone, look up songs like "Black Flowers" and "Ma and Pa".
Black Flowers is outstanding its too bad it wasn't shitty or generic enough to get heard on the radio
Black Flowers is a favorite of mine for sure. Was working at a music store when Give a Monkey a Bran came out and it was on heavy rotation.
I. Fucking. Love. This. Song.
This is on my old Guaranteed Speeding Ticket mix CD for road trips.
i saw them live at The Sting in New Britain, CT somewhere back in '91-'93(-ish?)... every one of them is multi-talented, they were _throwing_ instruments back & forth between the stage hands-- there were literally guitars, trombones, sousaphones flying through the air 😂 it was the middle of summer, & it was so hot in the venue, the floor was _completely_ wet with sweat, & no one left fully clothed 🤣

I am so glad you got to these guys. Started as a Ska / Punk band, but really ventured out. They did a little of everything. Fantastic musicians.
Loved that era of LA rock. Fishbone, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, Mary's Danish
I think this song is about depression due to the state of the world. Fishbone is one of the best bands ever, period. They are well worth your time. Fishbone is hands down the best live band I've ever seen. Check out the albums Truth & Soul and In Your Face
Yes finally so happy you did fishbone! They must be one of the best live bands I have ever seen.
Their drummer Philip Fisher was in a metal band (Wicked Wisdom) with Jada Pinkett Smith on vox! I actually saw them open for Sevendust once. 🤘

Lyrics
I see the pestilence outside my window
I see the dung heaps piled at least a mile high
I see the shards of shattered dreams in the street
I face the morning with my customary sigh
I hear the sounds of children laughing aloud
A stumbling wind has attracted quite a crowd
My breakfast finished now I brave the outside
But all the clouds have hidden all the warmth inside
Chase these clouds away
I hate this sunless Saturday
Chase these clouds away
I hate this sunless Saturday
Freedom come
For us now
Light our sky
Burn away these clouds, yeah
Perhaps the charcoal gray and brown around me
Is just the mirror image of my tainted soul
I think the sun will never visit my sky
Until the truth is seen by each and every eye
Chase these clouds away
I hate this sunless Saturday
Freedom come
For us now
Light our sky
Burn away these clouds
I see the helpless and I see the insane
I see a pauper singing in the pouring rain
I see the means of help elude us again
I think the sun will never visit me again
Chase these clouds away
I hate this sunless Saturday
Saturday, Saturday
Saturday, no more sunless Saturday
Saturday, no more sunless Saturday, hey hey
Yeah, sunless Saturday
Sunless Saturday, yeah

Easily my favorite Fishbone song. Such raw power in the instrumentals.

One of my all time favorite bands. Check out more of their stuff. Great movie documentary out there they did too.
They bummed cigs off me and my brother and chatted outside the Einstein-A-Go-Go’s before one of their shows in 1989. It was glorious
No los conocía. Muy buen video y canción. Excelente reacción!
They performed this song on Saturday Day Night Live in 1991. I remember watching it that night.
Goosebumps with every damn song of theirs!
Beat me to it...was going to suggest some Fishbone goodness XD
...nah, man: They are, just, talkin' about being: depressed, sad, FEELING so bad that it seems like "the sun will never visit" you again.
-You've been there?? ...I have!
Fishbones Best Album... saw the Sunless Saturday video premiere on MTVs 120 minutes back in 1989... Been a Fishbone fan ever since
Fishbone is one of those bands that you can't put into any one category; are they metal? Are they ska? Funk? Soul? The answer is: yes.
Definitely listen to the fans and check out Everyday Sunshine; it's one of those songs that just makes your day so much better. Party at Ground Zero, Cholly, Ma and Pa, Ugly...just some of the other tunes you should also scope. Fishbone has a lot of slept on songs.
wut.. under what rock have i been living this is sick!! woohooooo
Amazing live!!
This song blew my mind. Loved it from the first time I heard it.
"Fight the Youth" is their best song from this same album.

You've got to check out their performance of this on Saturday Night Live. Best musical performance ever featured on the show.
a very important band. i loved these guys so much in highschool!!! xoxoxox
Bad Brains "I against I"
You have to see them live. I have chilled with them super nice/cool people.
Nobody:
Angelo Moore: Lets take acid and make a music video!
Fishbone: Everyday Sunshine
Yes he needs to see it.
yes. this songs sassy sister... also.
nobody:
Angelo Moore: "wwwWWAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!"
Angelo has always been really _out there,_ but it should never be left unsaid that he's also a really nice, friendly, gracious dude. :)
0okamino As soon as I saw him, I was like ADHD! Makes him a great frontman, though.
Angelo for President!
Dude's doing that crazy shit on a damn upright bass! Mindblowing!
surprised no one recommended the "Swim" video.
i recommended it.
Everyday Sunshine is a great Fishbone song.
Their very best tune!! Fantastic stuff.
I put on Livng Colour to look these guys up, one step ahead my friend
