I knew quite a bit about the hijacking, and a little of the fire. But nothing about the ship's early life. I also didn't know that Moss Hills was aboard her during the fire/sinking. I love finding out about a ship's history beyond just the accident it's known for.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that. The ships that we talk about are so much more than their sinkings, and it's just as important to talk about their history. I'm glad you feel similarly! Happy Holidays!
Thank you for this video. Very well narrated and great photos. As a Maritime buff from when I was 13 this is a very special ship to me. In Adelaide in the 60's you could visit the travel agent and obtain a boarding pass to spent time on ships that were docked at Port Adelaide (outer harbor). This I did as a matter of routine. And one lucky occasion I managed to board this ship for the afternoon having an unguided tour. In those days security was practically non existent. (1965) It was one of the most beautiful ships I had ever seen. It's stunning hull which was the shape of a classical sailing ship which raked outwards to the waterline giving the ship a unique profile as it sailed away. I can remember concluding my tour with a tray of tea in the ships lounge with my parents before being summoned on the tanoy to make our way ashore. It was truly a memorable experience. Also as we lived at Semaphore, right by the beach I was able to view the ship sailing into the gulf of St Vincent as the sun was setting thus making the ships lights against the dark sea in the twilight seem like a jewel on a piece of velvet. It took an hour to disappear from view. It was in an out of the headlines for years and for all the wrong reasons as though it carried with it an unimuteable curse. Just last year I managed to purchase a very rare teaspoon from the Willem Ruys with the insignia which is a great little piece of memorabilia. Again many thanks.
That's an incredible memory! Thank you so much for sharing it with me! This ship and this video was one of my absolute favorites to make. She was truly the gorgeous Blue Lady! Cheers!
Moss Hills must be the biggest albatross you can get - if ever you get on a cruise and he rocks up the gangplank with his guitar slung over his shoulder just get off!
That's if you've decked 👀 yourself with a mountain of rabbits feet and St Christopher medals and and crossed all your fingers and toes. Personally I'd sooner have an extra layer of security in the form of experience and expertise.
I had my 6th birthday on the Willem Ruys while emigrating from Vlaardigen (Nederland) to New Zealand in April, 1963. A 5 week trip from Rotterdam through to Wellington. I still have some teak elephants my parents bought while passing through Colombo (Sri Lanka).
sorry I am late I finally got my sleep schedule under control haha always happy to see a new vid up and out ..... also any WW2 ship, videos, soon (I don't mean to sound greedy or pushy)
I was on the USS Wainwright (CG-28) in the 80s when the AL was hijacked and we shadowed her until the end of the incident.. flash forward to 1994 when I was on the USS Gettysburg (CG-64). We had departed Kenya on the way to the Persian Gulf. Received the SOS from the AC, on fire, and we reversed course and headed to her position. We took on board 100+ passengers for 3 days then off boarded them in Djibouti.
My dad, grandfather and uncle were crew when the Achille Lauro sank. They were musicians there and it was awesome they lived to tell the tale. It all happened a year before I was born. I can recall them telling stories my whole family was worried sick they might not survive. To this day, they still are musicians except for my retired grandfather.
I saw her only once. I was eight years old on a Greek island cruise on the SS Stella Solaris. She was docked near us in Istanbul. I never knew she would sink later that year.
At the time of the hijacking of the Achille Lauro I was stationed aboard the frigate USS Thomas C. Hart. I believe we were at Palermo, Italy at the time. You mentioned several fires on the ship. My ship suffered an incredible eleven fires during a nine month stretch. All but one were electrical fires and promptly put out, but one was what is known as a Class Charlie fire, which is fed by combustible material that is not a liquid. Only one of our crew was injured, not badly, second class burns on his hands and arms. The worst fire was in the ship’s ventilation system, and it burned for about two days before we were sure it was over. I can’t speak to fires on cruise ships, but I was told that there is a fire practically every day on board the huge aircraft carriers in our Navy. Thanks for your research. I had never known that the Achille Lauro was so old, and that she succumbed to fire at long last.
Thanks so much for your insight and sharing your knowledge! I love hearing from real mariners who know what their talking about. That is incredibly fascinating! I didn't know fires were so prevalent on aircraft carriers. Thank you so much!
Hello Shipwreck Sunday! Interesting to see a video posted by a couple who happened to be into ships! Derek is lucky man! And Eleanor, nice job on the narration. Looking forward to more! I am a fan!
Strangely, the Achille Lauro had a sister ship called the Angelina Lauro which also met its fate by fire while docked at a pier in St.Thomas in 1979. Bad luck in the family, I guess.
That is a very strange phenomenon, I did not know that! Thank you for sharing that information! And thank you very much, we appreciate it! I'm so glad you're enjoying the content!
Moss Hills, just judging from the little I know about him and what he's said about the two disasters he was involved in, was an amazing person and I wish him the best in this life! He was truly an unsung hero in this story.
I am of direct bloodline Achille Lauro … The Angelina Lauro was named after my great aunt Angie when she first came to America she brought with her Briefs cases full of Hundred dollar bills… I have personally met her she died when I was 5 … I am Jaime Lauro

It does seem that way! However I'd feel safer knowing he's done this a couple of times!

Hi there, good to see you again! No problem - I have Yamato on the schedule, I just have a few ships ahead of her. Yamato will be in mid-January.
Its amazing that the unfinished ship survived WW2 to be completed.
She certainly had an eventful career.
Hello, sir! Good to see you! She was a really interesting ship, I enjoyed doing the research on this one.

I've never heard of a ship with a caught fire problem to match Achille Lauro!
Thank you for the upload!
Thank you!!
I spent my 22nd birthday on the Achille Lauro in 1976 along with my mother and sister. It was one of my most memorable birthdays of my who life.
I'm envious! That sounds wonderful! I am so glad you got that opportunity aboard her - she was quite the vessel!

Hi Eleanor!
Ps: another great video!
I guess if you just look at this ship the wrong way it'll burst into flames.
I was quite surprised when I learned moss hills were onboard this...

The peaceful PLO ??????? That's mind boggling!!!!
Well Wu-Tang! It's almost Sunday!
Almost there!
I saw this when it aired and saw her once in Turkey and on the SS Stella Solaris.
That's incredible! I would have loved to have seen her. She was a beauty!

Is this ship any connection yo 'Angelina Lauro ' ?
I don't believe so!
Yes, they were running mates both under the Lauro line

Achille Lauro did not sink!
Yes, yes she did.
