AND THEY CONTINUOUSLY SAY SHE'S SMART!! She is dumber than a boiled potato. How is Violet Sorrengail even alive? Also, the amount of times in the beginning that she called Dain her best friend while displaying zero friendship chemistry WHATSOEVER is crazy! And how have the dragons not enslaved the humans if they are that much stronger AND often disagree with them? You mean to tell me that Tairn threatens to eat a teacher when he gets mad at Violet, but does nothing when he's held away from Sgail for that long? How do the humans have any at all power?
I hate this book with a passion. I consider it an insult to fantasy books and writing in general. To say I want my time and money back is an understatement.
This!!! I was honestly feeling so weird about Violet and Xaden's romance but I couldn't put my finger on it. You described it so well! She read like a child while he read like a mature man! *shudder*
Even before we found out that Dain stole Violet's memories, he also showed toxic traits, but it was like toxic parenting, not toxic love interest. He was like a helicopter parent to Violet, limiting her and everything. It was so annoying.
Zebra here. I was so incredibly disappointed in this book, since it can be tricky to find characters that embody hypermobility properly. I have my headcanons, but having it in print would've been something amazing. Instead, I got an airheaded teenager in the body of a 20 year old.
I just could NOT understand why all these dragon riders were trying to kill eachother. It just made no sense to me. Why are you trying to make your army hate eachother, and not want to protect eachother. Why are you trying to off your ENTIRE army, even near the end when they all have dragons and have made it through pretty much all the tests.... Like, I understand she was going for the quality over quantity thing... but it still makes no sense to me. Why would any war college let its army kill eachother off... like, wtf? Any amazing top tier soldier could kill any other amazing top tier soldier any time they wanted if they simply "didnt like them", and its fine? What a weird strategy.... it makes me not want to root for this stupid war college. I also felt like I was reading really young characters. Like Dain's only personality trait is keeping Violet safe.... thats it.
Such a great point! This is another thing that made no sense to me. It was not fully explained WHY they were all killing each other? You’re saying they don’t have enough riders and dragons aren’t bonding but then you just let them all kill each other??? They should be working together then?
I've never experienced a book which held up to examination as poorly as this one. If you think about anything for one second - literally one second, anything at all - it falls over and crumbles. And, spoiler, the second book is even worse for it thanks to being a) somehow even longer and b) clearly rushed out so even the author didn't bother thinking twice about anything. What a ride.
Exactly it’s a book where you’re supposed to just not question anything at all because if you do it doesn’t make sense. Yeah I keep hearing so many bad things about the second one. And there’s a rumor the third is coming out really soon so this whole thing just sounds like a money grab. take your time and actually write something that makes sense!
I'm so glad you read this book cuz I was NOT buying the relationship or lore. The sequel, Iron Flame, made me feel like I was going insane. Apparently cadets can be assassinated in school??? Despite being in the middle of a fucking war where soldiers are a necessity???
I just feel vindicated. Yes, Violet is stupid. Yes the school is stupid. And you know what, most of the people just seem to be idiots. even the dragons are stupid. I don't know why people are so hyped on it.
This book reads extremely cringe tumblr millenials, and that's coming from someone who years back used to be an extremely cringe tumblr millenial. I had to DNF it. 😬
See, I enjoyed it but I feel like she started off writing a YA book and then wrote a sex scene and the whole thing went ‘whoops adult romantasy now.’ The one thing I wish had been kept out was knowing the dragons are fucking because that part was unnecessary. I also went opposite and love Xaden and cannot stand Dain and want to launch him into the sun. The whole ‘I’m gonna coddle a grown woman and push what I want her to do on her while she’s saying she doesn’t want to do that’ thing got on my damn nerves. And then him using his abilities on her without consent because he’s jealous. At least once it came down to it Xaden pushed her to improve herself physically and didn’t overly baby her outside of Liam. And Liam was my favorite character and the plot did him dirty. Almost thought the whole thing was about to turn into a love square to be honest 😂
If this was marketed as YA I wouldn’t have been as mad because the cringy parts would be expected reading something targeted towards that audience but the fact that she wrote a huge s*x scene and then was like okay it’s new adult now really blew my mind and made it feel so gross to me lol Yeah initially I didn’t mind Dain and then he got worse and worse as the book went on. I would have preferred her to dump them both for Liam 😂

I don't read a lot since I'm an adult, but I saw dragons, I saw "best seller", so I was thinking "what's could be wrong".... Well, it's look like a Ao3 sexy fanfictions... It's ok to read that if you know you will read fan service. But they marketing it like something with (real) romance and war !! Not that nonsense situation just to put some blood and some sexy situations here and there..
Omg the point about sex with Ehlers Danlos is such a good one! I hadn't thought about that. Also not once does Zayden actually want to kill her, she just keeps saying it 🙄
I hope someone can answer my comment. i was talking to someone at the customer survice from a book shop and they told me that this book without sprayed edges is what the writer wrote and the one with the sprayed edges is the international variant, which is basically the same but it’s a little changed by the audience itself. The story is the same, but the details could be slightly different from what the writer wrote. Is this true?
I have not read this nor do I intend to, but I have listened to enough rants and small readings that I feel like I have read it... and to that end- I realized something. You said that Xaden and Violet found out their dragons were mated cuz their dragons decided to 'mate' and they could feel it- but Violet's dragon was bonded before to another guy- who apparently died trying to save her brother, right? And Xaden is in his 3rd year as a rider- and Terin's rider only died a year prior- so it seems to me that Xaden was well aware of who his dragon's mate was- because he got hit with those emotions every time his dragon and Terin mated... and that happened when the other rider was bonded... sooo... now we know another level why Xaden smoked 'weed'. lol!! The levels of dumb in this book are... off the charts.
One thing that I’m confused about is that why are these dragons helping out the humans? They’re portrayed as being these powerful and beautiful creatures and yet… they’re just laying down their lives for a bunch of humans? Like why?!! WHY?!! Please does someone know because it makes no sense to me when they can easily subjugate humans.
@@ReadingWithMeg , thanks for the reply! Then I’m also confused because it was stated that fewer and fewer dragons are bonding and yet when it comes to the baby dragon they’re like let’s kill it because it’s scrawny or whatever. It makes no sense to me because there is a good chance that it can grow into a powerful dragon and plus it’s a baby, too. It makes no sense to not only kill off their comrades but dragons now too? @@ReadingWithMeg , haha, make it make sense. Also to not only hear that this will be a five book series but potentially made into a movie is mind boggling to me. Will you be reading the series on the series? Just here for the rants 🤣🤣🤣.
The disability "rep" in this book feels so gross and problematic to me. I have EDS and the whole time I was wondering why and how the hell Violet could do any of this shit and not suffer from flare ups of pain or injuries etc. There's an essay about Fourth Wing and toxic perseverence that points out my biggest issues with it, because she really just grits her teeth and ignores her pain when it does come up, pushes through, and then succeeds and gets to be a badass hero basically by overcoming her symptoms. i hate it so much because the author and the marketing positions this book as "inspirational" and "representative" of EDS, so now people will read it and take it at face-value, not questioning the ableist rhetoric that is "if i just try harder and push through, i can do it". yuck.
I completely understand. I think it’s supposed to be “inspirational” and if we could all magically heal our pain and injuries we would etc but I do think overall it is problematic and harmful to people that do have this condition. I knew reading it that things were not adding up and making sense but other people without that knowledge will not notice that.
Yeah I think the fact that people who don't know any better won't notice that this isn't accurate/true/is ableist will just take it and run with it and perpetuate the same messaging. And this messaging has stopped me and many other EDS-havers from recieving adequate medical care (it took me and most of my friends over 9 years to even be diagnosed), to the point where recently a woman in her 30s actually died because nobody took her EDS symptoms seriously. And I really hate that the book is meant to be "inspirational" because it feels like it turns Violet into the disability superhero or super-crip trope, which is exploitative and harmful. Ultimately when this book calls itself "inspirational" it's selling the idea that we can and should just push through and try harder to overcome our body's limitations, and I really hated it. @@ReadingWithMeg
@@whatareyousayinggirl everything you just said is soooooo true!!!! Thank you for this. I don’t have EDS but go through similar issues with endometriosis where things are taken way out of context, down played, and incorrect info is spread in books constantly. And it’s super harmful to people waiting for a diagnosis or receiving care. It’s a matter of this book trying to do something that shouldn’t have been done because it did more harm than good.
Well… the basic thing I would think about: why the publisher thought they need more of this than from acotar of SJM right from the beginning? This book is not good on any level. But it’s built on social media hype. No offense but those who liked it are pretty much shallow in reading and “it’s like Hunger Games”, no it isn’t. “So complex” no it is not unless you are 12… these TikTok reviews were funny but sad. And they knew it will happen. And it was sent to celebrities before publication to hype up. I wonder if several of the vids were fake or not. Because the celebs had it for sure. I saw it in one’s hands. Absolutely a manipulation of TikTok.
Crazy!!! Yeah I keep seeing this pattern over and over with books that get popular from tiktok and I just no longer trust any hype that comes from there
@@ReadingWithMeg yep. It’s a thing. I mostly read what Merphy Napier and so on review before they do (except the newest books). So I have a pretty solid overview who has a good understanding what’s a “good prose” and would building and such. But in this case the publisher company was very shady. How is a thing that they got a movie contract for a book before!!! published? That’s impossible even for Neil Gaiman who has not one but 3 successful tv series out (Good Omens, Sandman, American Gods). Something is going on here with the business and social media hype. And celebs got this book before publication. I know it as I saw with Chrissy Costanaza singer of Against the Current. She had one way before. Guess what? She is a book worm and has a discord. Love her but I have the feeling they have to her for a reason.
I couldnt make it through a single page without cringing or eye-rolling or generally wanting to fling thr book across the room. I kept waiting for the "fun" everyone said was in this book, but I. Was. In. Too. Much. Pain.
"I wanna get plowed by him because he smells like breath mints." 🤣 I have been anticipating this rant video since you announced you were going to read this book. I knew it was coming. 😂 Please do a vlog where you read ridiculous smut books. Watching you crack up while reading sex scenes is the best thing I've watched in a while. 😂
This was a fun video to watch! I feel like I just got swept up in the hype, so I thought the book was much better than it actually was 😅. (Maybe it also has something to do with the fact, that I only started reading again last year and I'm still exploring what I like.) I definitely agree with everything you pointed out tho. I did have fun with the book in a way but it wasn't really that good. 😅 (Loved the dragon walking to the bar at the end 😂) I also wish someone could just heal my endo and take the bloating and pain away 🥺
My BFF said this is her favourite book of all time. I bought for myself to enjoy what she likes. Idk if it’s because im a gay dude but nothing is this book was enjoyable nor charming. You can find plot holes in the book like y tf are they trying to murder there soldiers to be and have zero safety protocols. Or how areas are barely described so I have no clue what the environment looks like. And also names are just jabbed freaking everywhere. I haven’t finished it but I hate it so much and I actually get hurt when I read into it but it was 20$ so I gotta suffer.
My exact thoughts idk how this book is so popular with all its flaws. It literally makes zero sense. I returned it which I usually don’t do but I was like Rebecca has made enough money off this one lolllll
I read this because I did what I was told to not to...judge a book by its cover, ... but I didn't think it was bad I liked it to be honest , I do have complaints but wasn't a deal breaker, just started video to see why everyone hating , I don't kno tiktok so I didn't this book was hyped up , I thought it looked cool lol
Despite my love for fantasy romance like this the one thing that truly hurts me with these books is them being able to tell when the dragons are smashing. That made me cringe soo much like it's giving when you're little and contemplating whether all of your dead relatives can see everything you do in the afterlife.
It's kind of an awfully written book but honestly it's a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. Sometimes I just wanna shut my brain off and read shitty fantasy romance.
@@ReadingWithMeg honestly the only people who rave about this book are big tiktokers and booktubers. Which makes you think are their reviews genuine or are they paid???
I went into the book expecting to outright hate it, dragon rider stuff is my favorite. It was just boring. And more importantly, the military would have failed a century ago. Dragons aren't bonding as much, let's let the cadets kill each other, no way one of those dead people would have bonded with a dragon. It is easily solved by saying the rebellion of Xaden's father were venin worshippers and that is why they continue to exist. The military is prepared for fights with venin and you don't have losses that could be easily avoided.
The issue with many young adult books is that they often include some of the cringiest explicit scenes and focus more on romance than on creating a coherent and well-developed world. They tend to resemble Wattpad stories, and, by the way, separating sentences with periods seemed ridiculously childish to me. P.S.: It's so addictive to see you getting angry about these books. Slay queen.❤
I feel the hatred for standard fantasy love interest so hard. I hate reading a fantasy book with any sort of romantic plot at all bc I hate the love interests every single time. They're entirely unlikable and if the main character is a woman she always deserves better. It's particularly infuriating when it happens in young adult novels because that awful "relationship" is taught to teens who deserve better!!
Have you read Tress of the Emerald Sea or Yumi and the Nightmare Painter? I know they're not exactly the standard fantasy books but they're much better than other romances I see typically
I also tried to read this, fell asleep 30 minutes into the audio, woke up rewound and listened at 2x speed to stay awake. I got through about 40%, and everything you say in the rant is exactly what I thought! I really wanted the dragons to suddenly rebel and start killing all the humans. Alas, that did not happen. So, I just wanted to say thank you for this glorious rant. I should have just waited for this video instead of wasting my life trying to listen to that book.
I literally wanted to rip my eyes out for ever reading this book. It went back to the store so fast. I don’t even want to see it on my bookshelf. It’s going to take up space for a book I hate. I couldn’t agree more with your review. It makes me honestly sick from the cringe. This is not my kind of book. If you like this stuff then good for you. I’m going to stay far away from books like this that just gives me the ick factor. 😬🥴
Oh yeah I’m getting rid of this book also there’s no way I’m keeping this 😂 I actually felt like I was going to throw up reading it. Which I don’t even feel that way reading horror 😂
From every review that I have watched of this book, it seems like they are describing a self insert fanfiction in high fantasy world that nobody cared to edit, proof read or make sense of the magical system. I truly want to know how much time did Rebecca Yarros spend working on this story because is so poorly done. It barely registers as a rough draft.
Do I have any interest in reading this book? No. Will I ever pick this book up? Also, no. Did I click on this video as soon as I saw it so I could listen to you rant? Hell yes 😂
You can like it but to call it the best fantasy ever? I feel like booktok readers have never gotten their hands on any kind of quality writting. The people who like it only say "i love dragons" they never say anything about the characters or the story.
“Her mom is a skank hoe” That quote needs to be added on front cover of the book asap lol. I feel same about this book, a lot things didn’t make since to me and they lost me every time violent confronted Xanden “ oh he is going to kill me! But he is hot though 🤮” Sorry you had to go through that tournament. But I loved your honest opinions ! Booktube needs more honesty like this!
Thank you! Yeah and it’s obvious from the beginning of this video I TRIED SO HARD to like this and it got so convoluted lol I could barely make sense of it because instead of elaborating on things to make it make sense the book just became the diary of a teenage girl basically 🤮
The one good thing about these books is that it makes a person feel better about what their writing. Maybe nobody will read my story, but at least it isn't that crap! lol
I won't pick this up. I'm a devoted sci-fi/fantasy fan but after having the plot described to me - there were absolutely zero plot points that sounded original. Sounds like a tacky, sexualized cash grab of a retort to Red Rising. Boring.
yesss finally another one who agrees with me haha i also made a spoilery vlog after dnfing it at 55 pages but i tried again and finished it to justify my hate for it😂
I must watch your video tomorrow!! I almost DNFd too multiple times but I also felt the need to keep reading just so I could fully feel the rage I had for it 😂
omg how can anyone actually like that book? I was never interested in it to begin with.. and now hearing details, all the hype makes NO sense! I smell somethin' fishy lol. I don't like to judge people for their reading tastes because hey, at least they're reading and we can't (and shouldn't) all like the same things, but anyone who praises this book is definitely getting the side eye from me. 😒
If people like this book then good I’m glad they enjoyed it but also….i will never understand lol I tried SO HARD to like this and it just got worse and worse
I remember reading Robin hobb's The Dragon Keeper book (1st book of a series) and that also includes dragons. One of the POVs you are a dragon which is so cool! The only issue I had back when I read it (young teen) was that each chapter is a different POV but I soon understood that and I remember really enjoying it :) Sounds like that book I read is soooo much better written and just a better story over fourth wing. I may have to read it that Robin hobb book again at somepoint haha :) Also want to read terry pratchett's disc world series eventually... slowly building up the series haha :) Great video as always meg! :D Bookblenderreviews
@@ReadingWithMeg Never said that, but when the same complaint is repeatedly stated it’s just a lot The beginning big chunk of the video was complaining about Xaden’s villainy
LOL. I told you. Hahaha. At least you experienced that horror. Does it hit like a horror…..no. It hits like a nightmare. I’m not ready to give up on fantasy romance……there has to be something good out there. I did see Iron Flame the week it came out available on Libby. I borrowed it and two days later cussed myself out. Returned it without trying it.

The funny fact is it get a tv series now 🤣
Oh noooo
I couldnt make it through a single page without cringing or eye-rolling or generally wanting to fling thr book across the room.
I kept waiting for the "fun" everyone said was in this book, but I. Was. In. Too. Much. Pain.
"I wanna get plowed by him because he smells like breath mints." 🤣 I have been anticipating this rant video since you announced you were going to read this book. I knew it was coming. 😂
Please do a vlog where you read ridiculous smut books. Watching you crack up while reading sex scenes is the best thing I've watched in a while. 😂
Oh don’t worry I have romance books for February to read 😂😂😂 I’m sure they also smell like mints
(Loved the dragon walking to the bar at the end 😂)
I also wish someone could just heal my endo and take the bloating and pain away 🥺
Yeah I get it I feel like I would have liked this book more when I first started reading lol it’s one of those books
You should take some of the awful books you read to an outdoor shooting range!
Great idea lol
I read this book (I was too young) and it was fine until the spicy scenes. It ruined the whole book because I thought it was Y/A until um, yeah.
Exactly I actually would have liked it more if those scenes were taken out and it was labeled as YA it would have made more sense
@@ReadingWithMeg yep! I just wanted a fun book about dragons (the writing was bad but I still enjoyed the vibe)
This book is so so juvenile. I can see young girls loving it. It is like a Hunger Games want a be!!!!
Why am I 96th in line at my library for this book lol.
That’s a great question lol
It took me over a month to finish this book. It was SO BORING and nothing was happening. I hated it so much.
I had high hopes since the beginning seemed very fast paced and then…..nothing happened for the rest of the book
Right!? Yeah that was the part where I was like omg you’ve got to be kidding me why was this not edited out 😂
princess bride is a better fantasy story
Hehe, love it and the love interest is simply adorable.
It's kind of an awfully written book but honestly it's a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. Sometimes I just wanna shut my brain off and read shitty fantasy romance.
And I completely get that!
fantasy broke you more than extreme horror, shame there's not a good combination of the genres.
Romance fantasy ruined my life
I have been looking forward this video. Love ur rants! Is that horrible of me to say!? It is a breath of fresh air! Thank u!
Hahah thank you so much sometimes it’s nice to just de-stress by screaming
Im obsessed with fourth wing BEST Book ever!!! But your options do matter
Your opinion matters as well and I’m honestly happy you love it 🩷
Thank u
I still haven’t read it 🤪
I was looking at the goodreads ratings and this book has very little 1⭐️ ratings. Majority of them have been removed or hidden. Oddly suspicious!!!
So suspicious considering so many people on TH-cam seem to hate it lol
Yesssss and the thing that makes me angry is that it’s labeled as adult! I would expect this with YA but not an ADULT novel.
Thank you for hating this book
Any time
I also tried to read this, fell asleep 30 minutes into the audio, woke up rewound and listened at 2x speed to stay awake.
Hahaha thank you I’m glad someone agrees!! I can’t believe I got sucked into the hype of this one. Idk how this got so popular.
Wow! I felt every bit of that frustration! Like a slow descent into madness. Hilarious! CFDF!
It sounds like a rip off of Dragonflight (Book 1 of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series), only MUCH more badly done.
Bet she's gonna turn into a lost fae queen with dragons 😂
From every review that I have watched of this book, it seems like they are describing a self insert fanfiction in high fantasy world that nobody cared to edit, proof read or make sense of the magical system. I truly want to know how much time did Rebecca Yarros spend working on this story because is so poorly done. It barely registers as a rough draft.
I stopped halfway bc I couldn’t deal with her 12 year old emotions!!!! Same!!!!!!
Frustrated and feral Meg is the best Meg
😂😂😂
Do I have any interest in reading this book? No.
Will I ever pick this book up? Also, no.
Did I click on this video as soon as I saw it so I could listen to you rant? Hell yes 😂
Well now you know what happens too so you don’t ever have to read it 😂
Is it wrong that I love seeing you rant? Haha. Rant on!
I can no longer contain my rage 😂
Great video, now i'll never have to read that book :D i dont think poor Rebecca ever had se* :/
You can like it but to call it the best fantasy ever? I feel like booktok readers have never gotten their hands on any kind of quality writting. The people who like it only say "i love dragons" they never say anything about the characters or the story.
This rant is awesome. I hate Fourth Wing. The plot is non existent, the characters are childish and flat and the book over all is poorly written.
that's a grogu cup? 😮
Apparently
@@ReadingWithMeg super cool 😎
“Her mom is a skank hoe”
That quote needs to be added on front cover of the book asap lol.
I feel same about this book, a lot things didn’t make since to me and they lost me every time violent confronted Xanden “ oh he is going to kill me! But he is hot though 🤮”
Sorry you had to go through that tournament.
Maybe nobody will read my story, but at least it isn't that crap! lol
I don’t understand how THISSSSS is what gets popular lol
I won't pick this up. I'm a devoted sci-fi/fantasy fan but after having the plot described to me - there were absolutely zero plot points that sounded original. Sounds like a tacky, sexualized cash grab of a retort to Red Rising. Boring.
yesss finally another one who agrees with me haha i also made a spoilery vlog after dnfing it at 55 pages but i tried again and finished it to justify my hate for it😂
I must watch your video tomorrow!! I almost DNFd too multiple times but I also felt the need to keep reading just so I could fully feel the rage I had for it 😂
😂🤣 that intro though
✨drama✨
I've heard about this phenomenon before.
this book must have been what they call a "YA book"
But not intentionally and with adult s*x scenes???? 🤮
omg how can anyone actually like that book?
The only issue I had back when I read it (young teen) was that each chapter is a different POV but I soon understood that and I remember really enjoying it :)
Sounds like that book I read is soooo much better written and just a better story over fourth wing.
I may have to read it that Robin hobb book again at somepoint haha :)
Also want to read terry pratchett's disc world series eventually... slowly building up the series haha :)
Great video as always meg! :D
Bookblenderreviews
Thank you!!! I’m sure the book you’re talking about is more well written than this one but then again….im sure anything is 😂
He was never trying to kill her, that’s the entire point
Wow suddenly this entire book makes sense now???????????? It doesn’t
@@ReadingWithMeg
Never said that, but when the same complaint is repeatedly stated it’s just a lot
The beginning big chunk of the video was complaining about Xaden’s villainy
This was a great video to wake up to . Best book series on yt!
Thank you!! 🙂
LOL. I told you.
Yeah if so many people who loved the first one hate the second one I can’t even begin to imagine how I’d feel about it 😂
@@ReadingWithMeg if OliviaReadsaLatte DNF’D guess what I need to the same. She’s my girl for fantasy romance.
❤
I saw this book at Walmart this weekend and had a good laugh
Ugh it must be stopped lol
This was absolutely hilarious. I enjoyed the book but agree with a lot of your points. Ahahaha loved these please keep ranting!!!
I love people who love this book and still appreciate me screaming about it without getting angry you’re all the best lol you know I’ll always have SOMETHING to rant about 😂
You literally make me lol. You're not even getting an intro today, that's how mad I am 😂😂 I would watch the rest of this because from what I've seen, we have similar book taste. But I kind of want to read it lol I hated A Court of Thorns and Roses. You made me feel not crazy 😂
If you read this….good luck. May the odds be ever in your favor 😂
This cracked me up 😂😂😂 thank you for your service
Any time! 😂
